Dance music sage Robin Triskele brings the Astral Circus back to Brixton Reported by Tara / Submitted 21-05-13 18:24 Raised going to the blues bars of Texas, Robin Triskele has literally been around music her entire life. Now a successful DJ and promoter, she also runs her own PR and consulting business, Triskele Management. A typical day might include booking a line-up for a festival, managing a stage, or working with a record label to ensure they get the most coverage online possible. It’s a wonder she still finds time for her other passion: herbs, food, clean living and foraging, and having just launched her page The Culinary Sage she has big plans ahead. With Robin playing a rare London gig at Astral Circus on Friday 31 May at Brixton Jamm, it was definitely time this multi-talented maestro made her HarderFaster debut! Ladies and gentlemen, meet Robin Triskele…. You’ve been surrounded by music all your life. For those who don’t know you, please tell us a bit about your background and how you first started working in the music scene. Wow... where to start! I was raised going to honky tonks and tiny bars in Texas where my aunt (Lou Ann Barton) was a well known blues singer, actually she was Double Trouble with Stevie Ray Vaughan for many years so my earliest memories were being able to hang with the adults and meet some blues and rock legends. I have always been well into my music, played French Horn in orchestra and sang for many years in choir... Anyhoo, moving forward many very interesting years to the late ’80s when I started proper clubbing. I worked in clubs and helped do small parties and eventually was asked by the DJs and artists to start helping them get more gigs, as I supposedly had the ‘gift of gab’ *lol!* , and from there it just flourished into my permanent and only job since 2003, when I came to the UK from the US. What have been your key musical influences over the years? And now? My first childhood influences came from my Mum and Aunt Lou Ann (Barton). I grew up listening to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones – my first ever concert was seeing The Stones at the age of 9, I remember feeling like the coolest kid on the planet! Moving into the ’80s then came Depeche Mode, still very likely one of my all time favourites. I really dig artists who write with feeling and depth behind them... Tori Amos, NIN, Vanessa Daou, Unkle, people who make music from the depths of their being and that comes across in their music. There are so very many electronic music artists that have influenced me in the dance scene. House and techno in the ’90s growing up in the USA took me to Detroit and Chicago to watch many of the masters! Richie Hawtin, John Acquaviva, DJ Collette, Derrick May, Derrick Carter, Kevin Saunderson, Speedy J. Also in the mid-90s I was drawn to Banco de Gaia, Orbital, Chemical Brothers, Cheb I Shabbah, Oliver Leib, and labels such as Harthouse, M-nus, Definitive... My god – where does it end?! Presently, I am completely across the board as we have influences from SO many places by now. I’m not married to any genre and find myself moving back towards deep music and enjoying the amazing experimentation allowed now in the acoustic electronica blend. How would you describe the music you play – does it belong to one genre? Now I’m very fond of moody music across the board. Something with deep feeling, be it deep ambient to dub techno, deep house to dub, or about anything between! I play mainly downbeat electronica, not the typical or the norm though for sure, but music with that bit of a funky and groovy twist to it. As well as being a DJ and promoter you run your own PR and consulting business. What does this involve? How can you help artists, labels and events get their message out there? I have been running Triskele Management now for 10 years. Previously in the USA it was Samsara Agency, but this focused mainly on artist management and bookings. It used to be a booking agency for many of the scenes top labels and names, but this shifted solely to the PR and consulting side of things about five years ago. I do marketing for festivals, club events, artists and record labels. With the invent of social media the possibilities for a global reach are endless. I create specialised campaigns for each client to suit and this can include many approaches: forum/blog announcements, email campaigns, advance promos and demo submissions and interviews. This all goes out through social networks, to my email subscriber list and in my monthly newsletters. In each month’s newsletter I highlight that month’s releases and such and then do a story on a certain release or festival. I do contests that offer free tickets and music CDs, as well as throw in some *scene culture* news and gossip. I’m about to introduce reviews as well. In the end, I can and have done about anything having to do with an event or release from beginning to end. This is what brought in the consultancy part, as I help my clients learn how to move forward in the way best for them. Giving them time to do the music, organize the events, without worrying so much on the details. What have been your favourite events to work on over the years and why? Oh this one’s tough, as there are so many I’ve worked with or organized in the past 10 years, and each have their own reason. Sonica (Italy) – I’ve been a part of Sonica for several editions now, it’s one of the best crews to work aside, such a tight family with a huge heart, which always translates well for the overall vibe. It is special this one. Time and Space (Mexico) was one of the most memorable as I was in the Mayan Riviera @ Tulum for the countdown to 21 Dec 2012. Words can’t describe watching Alex and Alison Grey lead the shamanic ceremony at the moment in time, and I simply can’t wait to return this year – best venue ever. Magikana (Wales) – you can’t beat a smaller gathering in the Welsh mountains. The backdrop alone is enough reason, plus I have been given freedom to run a stage and bring some tucked away UK talent. Tribal Gathering (Panama) – last year being the first year was difficult, but the concept is heartfelt and it is one to watch grow. I mean come on... it’s in Panama! Lastly but surely not least would be Psychedelic Gatherer: Solstice @ Ruigoord (Amsterdam). This is our 10 year anniversary and I’ve been working with them for eight years now. This is a small tucked away squatted hippy village from the ’70s and it brings out the inner freak in everyone! Such a wonderful dancefloor and the chill is in a church! Summer is finally almost upon us, which festivals and parties are you working on? What would you recommend checking out? Well this year I’m taking a break from so many as last year I was travelling too much and felt disconnected from ‘real’ life. I decided to take it easy this year so I’m working Sonica, Solstice, Magikana and Time & Space. They are definitely my favourite to work on, so I may as well stick to a smaller handful than overdo it! I want to concentrate more on my garden and herb practice and watch my farm grow! I’d recommend to festival-goers this year to check out obviously the above ones... but then I am definitely biased. Tree Of Life is set in a brilliant location and the line-up is fabulous. NOMAD is a new festival also in Turkey that hosts a bit more to the progressive side of things. I also would personally hit Lost Theory in Croatia as they have really pulled out the stops and gotten in Extrawelt and some other really amazing acts. Solafayre is small with a shanty family vibe in Kent in the UK. I can’t imagine a better way to end out the season in September than with 300–400 laid back peeps and it is totally kid friendly, and the second stage, the Kaplick Solar Stage, hosts some of the grooviest up and comers in the Canterbury and UK scene. What are the three things you wouldn’t go to a festival without? My holistic bag of oils, tinctures and superfoods; my trusty grey Docs (Maartens); and a notepad and pen – which goes with me everywhere. Always good for recording new friends and all those things you forget after a very long week. If you had enough money to through a party or festival anywhere in the world, where would you have it and who would you book? Oh my God, if I had money to do so... hrmmmm. I’d probably do one of the most odd line-ups, but here we go: Depeche Mode, Rabbit in the Moon, Morcheeba, Gabriel le Mar/Saffi Bros, Boris Brecha, Derrick Carter, Roni Size or LTJ Bukem, Gong, Extrawelt, Unkle... And if we could resurrect Pink Floyd to do Live at Pompeii (Echoes) or early days Led Zeppelin – without a doubt these ones would stand alone! Through playing parties and your work behind the scenes you’re exposed to the freshest sounds around. Which artists have been catching your eyes and ears lately? I’m really digging the Dubmission releases, Akasha (and Quanta) are doing something quite funky right now I don’t feel others are completely touching. I’ve been playing a good fair bit of Hibernation and Digitalis as well, Seb seems to have moved the bar up in his productions and style and I can’t get enough. Section Records, Nick Tripswitch’s label, is really releasing some super good crossover downtempo electronica, progressive and bass. Rena Jones’ new release is so beautiful and grows on me more every time I hear it. I’m pleased to see such a good crossover emergence that hasn’t been present in the past. We’re seeing much more ‘electronica’ these days as opposed to only psy-chill. It makes for such a more interesting dance floor. What have been the highlights of your musical career? And what goals do you have for the future? I’ve been so lucky to have shared the stage with so many amazing names, I couldn’t pick just one. If I can answer that one from a business standpoint, it would be the opportunities to stage manage and assist in creating some of the best stages in the festival circuit and to be blessed enough to help consult alongside several artists I’ve looked up to for years: Banco de Gaia, Younger Brother, Suns of Arqa and OOOD. And just the sheer amount of amazing memories I’ve had the chance to experience in my travels and along the way – so many special people it fills my heart with gratitude! As for the future, Triskele has a few new tricks up her sleeve so keep your eyes peeled! In addition to your work in the music scene you’ve also set up a FB page called The Culinary Sage, what’s it all about? It’s the first step to living my love and my passion. Herbs, food, clean living, foraging... just experiencing life being one with mother earth. I am out every day foraging, watering seeds, making new recipes with all the gifts of nature we have to feed from. It is an old past time that is dying and I want to pass it on. I’ll be giving talks and workshops, as well as teaching classes for kids (and adults eventually) to share the knowledge of the wonderful ways we can heal ourselves naturally. I’ve manifested myself a farm and now I’m here, I’m itching my geeky green thumb. Life is simply amazing. Look for a few ebooks coming in the future under this name!
