The Asheville, North Carolina based DJ and producer has been tearing up the festival dance floors for a while and is now ready to present her debut release to the world! Future Species - ‘Greater Intelligence’ is being released via Psy-Sisters Music so we decided now was the perfect time to grab her for a quick chat!

Firstly, when did your love for music begin?

From my earliest memories I have had a deep love and appreciation for music. My mother was a pianist and a vocalist; and I had two older brothers who were teenagers when I was born, so there were many different styles of music playing around me, and I was exposed from an early age - to the joy and satisfaction only music could give me. I remember singing and making up little tunes on the piano when I was just a few years old and knowing this was something that I loved and wanted to create for the rest of my life.

Do you remember the name of the first record you bought?

From the time I was four years old, I had my own very interesting record collection of possibly hundreds of different records, from early classical to jazz, blues, soul, rock, disco, Latin, pop, punk, musicals etc.; ranging from the 1930s all the way to the 80s... I listened to all of it... My older brother sold records at the flea market when he was a teenager, so I would get everything that had a minor scratch or imperfection. This was the most influential of times because I had hundreds of obscure and unique choices at my fingertips, that you would never hear over the radio. I would sit at my little record player all day and play everything that I had, over and over. I didn't really listen to the radio when I was really small so I didn't know what was ‘cool’ or what wasn't, I just liked what I liked and none of it was the same. I went with what moved me and what kind of mood I was in at the time.

When and how did you get into DJing?

For me, DJing came after I started producing music. It was an outlet for me to play the music that was inspiring me to make Psy-trance. I wanted to share what I was listening to, so I decided that I wanted to learn how to DJ. I made my first mix in 2015 and put it on Soundcloud. A few months later I was booked to play at an event for T.O.U.C.H. Samadhi in February of 2016 which officially started it all for me.

So you began producing before DJing, how did this come about?

All my life I've written my own music on the piano or mandolin. I was into Jazz, Blues and Folk music for most of my earlier years. Then something changed and I really fell in love with Electronic music. I had a friend who had a home studio and wanted to record me playing the mandolin for an electronic track he was making, this introduced me to the concept of Home Studio Production around 2010. I quickly purchased a new computer, some monitors and a decent midi controller and took a beginner’s course from Berkely online. A few years later I completely fell in love with Psy-trance and got more serious about the level of production I wanted to create. I purchased better equipment and also started taking private lessons. Now, almost a decade later - I won the Psy-sisters release competition!

What inspires you when making music?

What doesn't inspire me when making music? I think everything in life from nature to my relationships have inspired me on some level. The creation of music helps me to go within and make sense out of everything. It's a way that I meditate because I go past my thoughts and allow something very subconscious to take control. It's the deepest part of me, yet also everything on the surface. It's very personal, yet something I want to share with everyone.

Do you have a particular process you follow when making a track?

I always begin with percussion when I'm starting a track. Sometimes I like to go back to the days of my youth and just play an elaborate piece on the piano for more inspiration. Then if I have a riff in my head, I write that and go from there. A lot of times that one little thing can inspire a whole new track.

Congratulations on winning the Psy-Sisters release competition! Your track Future Species - ‘Greater Intelligence’ is being released on Psy-Sisters Music. Tell us about the track…

It's a high energy mix of emotions, made to move the dance floor inspired by the love I have for Psy-trance and all the people who make it possible.

Apart from music, what are your other passions?

I enjoy running, meditation, working out and helping people heal emotionally.

Tell us about one of your most memorable psy-trance related experiences and why this was special for you…

That would be the Psy-trance show I attended that changed everything for me. T.O.U.C.H. Samadhi held a local event and Kri Samadhi was playing a set that night. The energy was something I had never experienced before. The vibes were so high that I knew at that moment that I was going to learn how to make Psy-trance and play my music for people. I wanted to make others feel like I felt that night.

Lastly; if someone were to write a book about your life so far, what should it be called?

‘Song of My Soul’

Many thanks for taking the time for this interview - all the best with your release and career! Smile X
