Talking techno part 2 — the Andy Farley interview

Reported by Steve Milton / Submitted 09-08-06 17:59

Sitting here as I am, blank page in front of me, it’s difficult to visualise what I actually intend to write. Usually I have a pretty good idea of the direction I want to go in and can pretty easily string something fairly cohesive together in the form of an introduction to the piece. But some names within the scene transcend all the normal superlatives associated with this kind of thing as everyone knows the name, has seen them play on numerous occasions and will no doubt have already formed an opinion. So right there is my get-out clause, this person really does need no introduction. Ladies and gentlemen — the Andy Farley interview.

Hi Andy, welcome back to the pages of HarderFaster. After a trip to Ibiza you’re back to London to play Tribal on the 18th August.

We all know you’re inclined to drop the odd bit of techno in your harder sets but it’s rare for you to play a whole set of techno. As a departure from the norm, is it something you like doing and will we be seeing more of you playing alternative genres in the future?

Andy: I’ve had the opportunity over the last 2 or 3 years to be able to do full techno sets, through my own night Blue, previous gigs at Tribal and after hours clubs like Fuel and Faith. I also played a 3 and a half hour tribal and techno set in Chile a couple of years ago so I like to snap up the opportunity when I can. I’ve also done things like 4 hours sets, starting with house and building through techno into harder music, which was great fun. I’ve never been a one dimensional dj, and have always strived to play and push as much a variety of styles as I can, whether that be within hard music, or elsewhere. I think it keeps you fresher as a dj.

Have you always had a love for techno or was it something you discovered later on in an effort to diversify and keep things fresh?

Andy: I started buying techno back in the early 90s with the early R&S stuff. Hearing tunes played at Trade by the likes of Malcolm Duffy, Steve Thomas, Tony de Vit and Ian M inspired me to buy more. I then started playing some of the funkier techno tracks mixed in with hard house as the groovier end of hard house disappeared in favour of bounce, as they fitted perfectly and were not dissimilar to what I had been playing anyway. As time went on I started dropping harder techno as well as this was great to change the sound in between hard dance tunes, as it woke the dance floor up by not being the norm. My philosophy has always been that a good tune is a good tune no matter what genre label you put on it, and if I feel it is suitable to play in a set then play it. Look at tunes like ‘Murder Was The Bass’, essentially a techno tune but that was played across the board from house djs to hard djs. I always feel it’s important to step outside the box and take a risk rather than playing safe.

Does your normal style of hard house reflect on the style of techno you’ll be playing on the 18th for Tribal?

Andy: No I don’t think so; I think I’ve managed to define a sound for myself techno wise. I know what sort of tunes float my boat, driving, funky, tough and groovy is the best description I guess!

So, which style would you say is the most challenging to play with regards to set construction, tune selection and technical creativity?

Andy: All sets require some thought; despite what people think about hard dance music, you can be creative with it. It can either be played well with a bit of thought, taking people on a bit of a journey, or just thrown together, but for me the former is more important. I approach techno with the same attitude but set construction I do differently, always climbing to a peak, but levelling off to let people groove in between rather than just hammering a set of big tunes. So for me techno requires a different mindset than harder music and as I play this less often than hard music you could say it is a bit more challenging.

When playing a set such as this does it take more planning in light of the fact that it is a bit different from normal or do you just bung all your suitable tunes in the bag and see how it goes on the night?

Andy: It certainly takes more planning, as playing hard music regularly you know the tunes like the back of your hand, so a lot of time spent going through my techno tunes is very important to see what goes with what. Having said that though, I’ve never planned a set in all my years of djing, as you have to be flexible. What if the dj before you plays 10 of your tunes as his last 10, if you’re not flexible you’re gonna look pretty stupid playing them all again!

You seem to have been a benchmark for some time within the hard dance scene to which other djs are measured. Do you find such praise flattering and who, in your personal view, do you think deserves similar respect within their respective genres?

Andy: I am flattered by comments like that, it makes all the years of hard work seem to mean something, and if what I’ve achieved gives inspiration to other djs then that makes me happy! DJs who have had a big influence on me, so deserve respect (though many of them are well respected already!) I would say are Tony de Vit, Carl Cox, Steve Thomas, Valentino Kanzyani, Umek, Adam Beyer, Hertz, Lee Coombs, Jeff Mills and Rolando, to name but a few!

You’re obviously used to playing lots of different venues both large and small, but there seems to be a resurgence of big name djs playing smaller more intimate venues, as is the case with Tribal taking place at Hidden. Is this something you like or does the huge festival type crowd give you the biggest buzz?

Andy: I get a buzz of both to be honest. Smaller venues are great because there is a great party vibe, and you have the intimacy, whilst a bigger events, you get a great buzz off there being so many people, but you don’t have as much eye contact with everybody, so you lose that vibe.

Being a bit long in the tooth myself I think it would be fair to say you’re now one of the more senior statesmen when it comes to djs with what must be 20 years of experience. Do you think there’ll be a time when you think, “Jeez I’m a bit old for this lark now?”

Andy: I’ve always said that the time to give up will be when I don’t enjoy it anymore, or I feel like I’m ‘going to work’. That hasn’t happened so you’re not getting rid of me yet! Wink

So following on from that do you think the younger and less experienced generation of clubbers would prefer to see someone a bit nearer their own age behind the decks, or does age and experience still offer great advantages in the dj world?

Andy: I don’t think it makes a difference to be honest, as long as you are delivering the goods and people are enjoying themselves, that is what matters.

So is it never too late to start?

Andy: I don’t think so, if you have something good to offer and can get it out there, go for it.

And finally, what’s the single most important piece of advice you would give to any newly starting dj hoping to show the same kind of longevity that you have?

Andy: The main point I would be stress is be yourself. Try to be as individual as possible. Don’t become just another hard dance dj or house dj etc. etc. Production is also a necessity nowadays, and is a great way to push yourself, but again if it just sounds like a copy of something else it won’t work. Do plenty of demos, give them out to people, both clubbers and promoters and get your name out there as much as possible.

Well thanks for your time and hope Tribal goes well for you.

Andy: Thanks for a great interview, and see you all down there!

And so it ends. If you’re a bit techno minded and want to catch one of hard dance’s most respected names do a rare techno set then get yourself down to Hidden on the 18th of August. It’ll no doubt be a while before you’ll have the chance to see another.

See you on the dance floor.
