Atmosphere Records - The opening of IBIZA 1936

Reported by Agnes Klos / Submitted 08-08-13 19:53

Atmosphere Records is a Belgian record label that was started three years ago by Jochem Peterson. During that time the label has become widely recognised on the music scene as a name to be reckoned with. Jochem, as the organisational brain of the concept has gained a reputation of an iconic figure: a DJ, producer, artist, label manager, songwriter and composer at the same time. With a career spanning more than 10 years already under his belt as a psytrance producer and live act under the alter ego of Ephedrix, Jochem now focuses his energy primarily on producing music in the studio and on managing his growing label. This summer the exciting news of a new project had been launched on the party island of Ibiza: Atmosphere Records presents IBIZA 1936. I managed to catch up with Jochem and had a chat about the label, Ibiza and his updates.

Hi Jochem, thank you for taking some of your valuable time to answer questions for the HarderFaster readers. Could you tell us how your journey with music began? Was music a part of your childhood and who were your early influences?

There was always music in my life, as a young kid I started playing the drums and I have always been intrigued by the process of making music. Maybe music producing in all its forms has been more important then the music itself since the very beginning. I could name a lot of cool albums that I loved to listen to, but actually my real passion and drive has always been about the creative and technological process of creating music. I still remember the days that I just couldn’t wait to get home from school to start programming on my hardware sequencers and synths.

My influences for electronic music were also other DJs and producers in the same scene. I have some favourite rock bands, especially I like lot’s of the 70’s music. But I don’t know if that really influenced my music. Many acts from the 90’s like Daft Punk, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers were my inspiration at the time.

Nowadays I’m really into house music for going out and having a good time and many good new and established DJs and producers have an influence on me. This is the reason I started Atmosphere Records.

Even though you are well known for your label Atmosphere Records which promotes deep, tech & minimal house, you started off as a psytrance producer and live act under the alter ego, Ephedrix. Could you tell us more about that period in your life?

I started more then 10 years ago with Ephedrix and did a lot of travelling around the world with my music and I still continue doing so. It’s a dream coming true to combine two of my passions; music and travelling. I have released two albums and released tracks on numerous compilations with great feedback.

It’s amazing that you’re invited to countries like Brazil, Japan or Russia, far from little Belgium and people know your music and dance to it. So it has been a very fun 10 years of my life. But the last years I felt there was more than trance music and I went back listening to house and techno, where it all started before Ephedrix. So at the moment I’m focusing more on my work as Jochem Peterson and my label.

Which of your gigs left the biggest mark in your memory?

This is a question I get all the time and it’s hard to answer. There were so many good times and so many adventures. But I can make maybe a top 3 and that would be New York. It was a big real underground rave and people really digged my set. One time we played on a New Years Eve party on the beach of Cancun. Nothing better then diving into the ocean after your set on the 1st of January when in Belgium it’s freezing cold. And last but not least, every time I travel to Japan, it is a big adventure and I love Japanese food!

After a very successful period with psytrance your musical taste shifted from to other genres of electronic music? What caused that change?

As I said earlier, after 10 years of Ephedrix and probably getting older, my musical taste shifted. At the moment as a producer I am working for some pop artists as a co-producer and even do ghostwriting for DJs in the DnB and dubstep scene. At the moment in my studio I have the most fun in doing new stuff. Trying out new styles that I've never made. That keeps me ‘on the edge’ and makes every day work fun for me.

I returned to my first love in electronic music, house and techno, with Atmosphere Records. I think the main reason for this was that around 2009/2010 I started going out again in Belgium and I found some really cool open-air parties with an amazing atmosphere. This was maybe the turning point at that time to get back to those genres.

With various compilations under your belt, you took your career to another level and 3 years ago you started your own label, Atmosphere Records. Can you share with us interesting updates and news from the label?

With Atmosphere we have been in a transition phase the last months and since the summer we are back with new stuff. We have made a complete style shift, in looks and in musical direction. The focus is now on fewer artists than before. We have at the moment in our roster: René Bourgeois (Berlin), Minimal Lounge (Hamburg), Remcord (Toulouse), Leesa (Gent), Ishtar (Antwerpen) and myself.

For the releases we look for producers that have a strong connection with the labels artists or me. The coming months you can expect vinyl and digital EP’s with some really good mixes by Sascha Braemer, Nico Stojan, René Bourgeois, Dan Caster, Remcord, Kollektiv Ost, Arts& Leni and Leesa.

Just recently your new exciting project has been launched on the party island of Ibiza: Atmosphere Records presents IBIZA 1936. Could you tell us a bit more about this?

This has been the biggest adventure of Atmosphere Records so far. We have a weekly residency on Ibiza for the whole summer of 2013. Every Thursday we host our label showcase in Moma Club, in Playa d’en Bossa. We have invited many of our friends to join us and we have had some very fun nights. On the other hand, Ibiza is a very difficult place, where other rules apply for organizers, others than for example in Belgium. It has been a difficult few weeks in July to get the promotion started, but I have learned so much and all my artists have been really supportive.

Now we are on track, the parties are running well, we changed some of the line-ups and focus also on local Ibiza talents. Every one is welcome in Moma on Thursdays. We continue at least till the end of September!

In the age of expanding music technology, as a music producer, how important is it to have an understanding of music theory?

I believe this is essential. I live for harmony in music. This is something you can only achieve if you know what you’re doing and if you know at least the basics of music theory. Although I think you can learn the theory yourself if you just put enough time in it. Producing music is like anything else in life, it’s practising and learning. The more you do it, the better you will become.

What motivates you to make music? What is your creative process like? Do you have any personal philosophy that drives you?

I think I really just have a need to make music, I don’t need motivation. In general I make only music that I like. My customers in the studio, I choose carefully. Lately I really love to work more on pop music, as it combines recording with production. More people are involved and it makes the process more interesting, less lonely. Before, as Jochem Peterson or Ephedrix, I could spend weeks alone in my studio. The process depends of what the goal is of that day in the studio. Some days you take time to play around and get inspired just by making music and jamming around. Other days I need to finish a certain mix for one customer or work on specific assignment.

What equipment do you use in your studio? What software and hardware are you currently using? Do you have a favourite piece of kit?

I have always been more focused on digital equipment. All my older hardware is put away in boxes. I have my workflow and it works perfect for me. I am a big fan of Cubase and also often use Ableton. My favourite plugins would be without doubt my UAD collection.

I'd consider you an iconic person on the music scene: A DJ, producer, artist, label manager, songwriter and composer at the same time. Do you prefer to be behind the decks or in your studio producing music? Which role do you prefer the most?

I need all, I love the variety of what I do. Sometimes it’s hard to combine though and emails stay unanswered after hours of studio work. I love producing music the most but it makes less sense if it isn’t played out for an audience. So I also need to perform. As a manager I have had troubles times already with the busy timetable and it also depends very much on the artists that you manage. But it can be a really rewarding job. I am always more happy to give a good booking to one of my DJs instead of going to play it myself.

Is there a place on our planet where you like coming back to? Maybe there a story behind it that you would like to share with us?

I love many places in the world, but Mexico always has a special place in my heart. My very first international gig was in Mexico, years ago and since then I have been going back every year at least once. I have many friends there and they love my music over. On the other hand, there are a few places I still need to see and that’s South Africa and Australia. Both countries have a strong electronic music scene, so I would combine it with playing a few gigs. Promoters over there, contact me! (hehe)

Thank you so much for your time, it was an immense pleasure talking to you.

Thanks you Agnes!
