Piercing new talent: interview with Pearce M

Reported by K8-e / Submitted 26-09-07 20:37

I started talking to Pearce M earlier this year. I can’t remember how or why but we ended up on MSN and a new internet friendship was born. His versatility sees him spinning dirty, funky house, uplifting hard trance and (the best description I’ve seen for hard house) hi energy and playful hard house. Ahead of his hard dance debut this Friday 28 September at Frantic presents HDS (Hard Dance Showcase), I thought it was time Pearce got the full HarderFaster treatment.

Hiya! Welcome to your first HarderFaster interview! How’re you doing and how has 2007 been for you so far?

It’s been a really good year so far — it has been productive, challenging and has had a few surprises! I’ve played some really good venues and played to some wicked audiences, so I feel like I have achieved a lot. I think one of the highlights so far for 2007 was back in March when I was asked to come on board with the Polysexual promotions crew and be in charge of booking DJs and running the Carbon Lounge at Air in Birmingham The experience was great and I worked with some wicked people. It was in June that Polysexual had a change in management, and now all bookings are done through the main man and resident, Mark H.

Also in June I DJ’d in Ibiza, playing at Eden, Es Paradis, Savannah, Kanya and Bar M’s pre party for Judgement Sundays. I had always wanted to play out in Ibiza and when I was given the opportunity I was very happy, and loved every minute of it. As far as future abroad gigs go I am due to play in Finland in October, which I am really looking forward to, and hope this is the start of further gigs abroad.

Let’s go back to the beginning… how did you get into dance music and what made you decide you would rather be behind the decks?

My interest and passion for music stems from my childhood. I love the energy music brings and how it charges people’s emotions. I had my first pair of decks when I was 16, I would spend hours on them after school. I remember thinking how wicked it would be to DJ as a profession, doing what you love most! I took music as a subject at school, and whilst everybody else enjoyed P.E. and wanted to be footballers, I was my happiest on the decks. As my technical skills grew, so did my confidence and I played my first few gigs at a couple of local bars in Birmingham to gain some experience. However, my ambitious nature was fuelling my urge to play to a large crowd at an established event.

Being on stage playing good tunes, and entertaining a crowd is what it’s all about! It’s the ultimate high!

So what was the first record you ever bought?

Mary Kiani — ‘Let The Music Play’, was the first ever record I bought; I still have it now… it’s a bit dusty though but still a tune!

You mentioned Ibiza earlier; you were out there with Funk Deluxe, a promotion you recently became resident for. How did you find the White Isle and how did you get involved with the legendary Vince?

It was Funk Deluxe that brought me to Ibiza. Being one of the Funk Deluxe residents Vince asked me to be part of the Ibiza tour, which I gladly accepted.

Ibiza was wicked, it was my first time on the island, and I really didn’t know what to expect. I had some wicked company and met some amazing people, I feel privileged to have been able to DJ whilst getting to enjoying myself too. I met Vince last year when I was DJ’ing for Polysexual in the Carbon Lounge at Air in Birmingham, we got chatting and he asked me to play for Funk Deluxe at Hidden, giving me my first London booking. My set went really well and the rest is history like they say.

Define your style for those not familiar with how you play?

I pride myself on being versatile, as I think that is the key to being a good DJ. It makes you more aware of your technical abilities and keeps the edge to your live performances. I think what you could expect from me behind the decks is fun, good tunes and good crowd interaction. I love entertaining and enjoy playing high energy sets, such as playful hard house, up-lifting hard trance and getting cheeky with dirty funky house. I can manipulate my skills and adjust my tune selections to please crowds, so I can contribute to a good clubbing atmosphere.

You used to DJ with General Lee on a regular basis. What do you think makes a good B2B and if you could chose anyone to go back to back with who would it be and why?

I would say respect firstly followed by chemistry. Playing back to back with someone is about having an understanding of what is expected of you and vice versa, having fun and being professional is also just as important. Your technical styles need to compliment each other as does tune selection. I have played some of my best sets with the General, we work well together and we still on occasion go B2B and bang it out like old times.

There is a lot of good DJs but the two that I would like to play back to back with are Rob Tissera, and Lisa Lashes, as they are both versatile and I like what they are playing out at the moment.

You’ve been in the studio lately with the main man Riggsy. Tell me more about the production side of things?

Yeah, I have done a few tunes with Riggsy now, a mixture of hard house and hard trance. He is a sound bloke and we produce well together. Riggsy is really talented and I feel privileged to have worked with him on so many occasions.

My first original tune was ‘Exorcism’, which included samples of ‘Tubular Bells’ played on the guitar by Riggsy and featured the Lord’s Prayer from the film ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’. I was really proud when I found out ‘Exorcism’ was being released on vinyl and I remember thinking this is a really big achievement! It was really inspiring to see the reaction the tune got when it started being played out. I remember one such event was the Tidy weekender when Ben Stevens played it and the reaction from the crowd was amazing. It was since then that I have been getting more involved in the production side of the industry, and have collaborated in the studio with other fellow DJs. I really enjoy playing out my own material and have also found it rewarding to see others dj’s playing my tunes during their gigs too.

Who are the producers that inspire you most and feature most heavily in your sets?

I find people inspire me in different ways, but at the moment there are a few producers that have caught my attention. Vinylgroover, Paul Maddox, and a couple of local producers; Riggsy and Paul F., are often featured in my sets.

As far as the ever-growing trance/tech trance scene has to offer, there is an up and coming DJ and producer Bayleigh who is a breath of fresh air to the scene, I think we can expect big things from her.

People are very quick to say hard dance is dead on here but I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the state of the scene in Birmingham and the Midlands?

In this industry there will always be surprises, highs and lows, and I feel that the hard dance scene is on a rotating scale. There are of course additional elements that have made the scene curdle — unfortunately there’s a lot of politics and misled individuals. I do believe it’ll all go full circle, and the scene will come back with vengeance, it just needs further injections of passion, faith and respect!

This used to be my favourite question but it’s not so comical now that people are playing CDs, but what is in your box (oo-er!) at the moment? Give me the top 10 tunes you aren’t leaving home without.

1. Anne Savage and Vinygroover — ‘The Pod’
2. Pearce M and Mini Minx Vs Riggy — ‘Let Me Clear My Throat’
3. Paul Maddox — ‘Party People’
4. BK — ‘Just A Feeling’
5. Edison Factor — ‘The Beginning’
6. Chris C — ‘Freefall’ (Pearce M and Bayleigh Vs Riggsy Remix)
7. Tom Parr — ‘There’s No Way You Found Out’
8. Tom Berry — ‘Age Of Love’
9. Marco V — ‘Loop N Tings’
10. Paul Maddox — ‘Have Faith’

So when you are aren’t DJ’ing or going in the studio what do you do with your time? Do you have any other hobbies or is it all about chillaxing to the max?

Chill and relax…what’s that?! Haha. If I’m not working full time, or DJ’ing I’m networking. Other than that I do like to have a kick around with the lads on a Sunday afternoon if I’ve not had a too heavy night before! But when it comes to my quiet time, I like to spend it with my fiancé; watching DVDs on the couch munching on home made popcorn.

You will be making your London hard dance debut playing at Frantic’s newest imprint HDS (Hard Dance Showcase) this Friday 28th September. What have you got planned and are there any other DJs you are looking forward to checking out?

For me a good start to a long distance gig is a road trip with my fiancé and friends, always a giggle and memorable! As for Frantic I am very excited about this event and am really looking forward to DJ’ing. There are some talent that I will want to check out such as Scott Fo-Shaw and Cally Gage. I would have liked to have been able to see Matt Pickup and Andy Rise play but I share the same set time as them, so it will need to be another time.

Where else can we catch you playing out over the next month?

I am playing all over and have a mixture of gigs playing a few genres in the diary. In order there is …

28 Sept 07 — Frantic presents HDS @ Hidden, London
29 Sept 07 — Classique feat Paul Oakenfold @ Sky Dome, Coventry
06 Oct 07 — Blessed @ The Voltz, Kettering
06 Oct 07 — Passion feat Paul Van Dyk @ The Emporium, Coalville
13 Oct 07 — Smashed @ The Quebec Café, Leicester
20 Oct 07 — Polysexual @ Air, Birmingham
27 Oct 07 — Force @ Mixel, Finland

It’s nice to be finishing the month off abroad in Finland… So all in all I am busy, but loving it!

And finally a few quick fire questions:

Your favourite alcoholic beverage?

A good bottle of Rosé wine!

Now they’ve reformed for a tour, who is your favourite Spice Girl?

Hmmm… Scary (that they have reformed).

What can’t you leave the house without?

My mobile!

The best words of advice anyone has given to you?

“It’s not how you make a mistake; it is how you correct it!”

Thanks Pearce! Looking forward to seeing you Friday x
