sorry mate, i feel a little thick here but where do i do the 'assigning' ? I've got the physical input linked to the 'monitor' and then linked to audioinst 1 (where the es2 is loaded). When twist the knob i get signal info in the monitor but i still don't know where i actually link up the knob to the parameter i want to control (102 using your example).

You need to actually assign a knob on your controller a controller no of 102. You will need to check your manual that came with the controller if you want to do this. What controller do you have by the way?
Girls, if you have to ask "How much?" then you are shaggin the wrong bloke
