We used to record there, and yes it's a shithole, but it's the last place near to town that isn't astronomical.
Which is basically why it's come onto my radar. Don't want to live in a shithole, don't have astronomical budget, want to be fairly central. It's a tough ask.

When I lived there about 8 years ago it was very cheap and was great for access to central London. Up towards London Bridge was good for bars and restaurants however coming away from there you would get some proper shit estates (like the one I lived on).
+1 to this. I lived in the four squares for a bit. Shithole. There's not really anything in Bermondsey except chavs and dogshit. It's close enough to London that you can go out there, but in terms of shops and services it's a bit of a wasteland.
On the plus side you can walk home down the south bank after a night out in London, which is lovely. Although we did used to catch the bus the last half mile or so back home, so we didn't have to walk through actual Bermondsey.

I was just discussing this with a friend and work and he made a very good point. How would you guys compare Bermondsey to Croydon? A place where me and my future flatmate are both happy living. I suspect a lot of you would tar Croydon with the shithole brush too, right?

Kes, I have been to Croydon for your band practice sessions some years ago and I also once met a bird in London and went back to her place in Bermondsey to shag. Therefore I feel I am expertly qualified to answer this question. All areas in London have good and bad parts to them. I lived in Kennington which to me was a lovely area, but if you went one street further on from my gaf you felt like you'd just descended into the pits of hell. The local on the bad side was infested by an assorted range of delinquent reprobates who looked like they were born with a can of stella in their hand and a fag in the other. As you walked past you felt a hint of deliverance about them and they'd stare with psychotic eyes which seemed to say, "Yeah, I do fuck my cousin. Wot you gonna do about, eh? Ya smarmy cuuuunt". In contrast if I walked just one street in the other direction there was an award winning gastro pub with a large assortment of real ales and free peanuts on the bar.
So in answer to your question I would say that there will almost certainly be shitting streets in Bermondsey, but if you get the right location it will be a great place to live. Proximity to Central London is an attribute that can greatly increase your enjoyment of being in such a big city.

During the summer I walked home from work most nights.
There's nothing wrong with you that reincarnation won't cure.

Bermondsey is the only place I have ever been intentionally spat upon. A savage-ridden pit, don't be on here in six months bitching about how you wish you'd never moved there.
