The truck at Nice killed 86 and injured 434, that was timing waiting for a large number of people to congregate in a single area. I expect there would be similar numbers in a seaside resort for fireworks or new year celebrations, certainly more than might be crossing Westminster Bridge during the working day, or London Bridge on a Saturday night.

And as you say, in the absence of local armed police, a knife attack could continue for ages.

Yep, up to 70 miles away, along rural roads so could take 60 minutes...

The Borough guys tried to hire a truck. It was sheer luck and a declined credit card that prevented it.

Given that armed police fired 80 bullets to take down 3 people armed with knives and even then managed to wound a member of the public, I think that expanding the 'protection' to include gun collectors is a very dangerous idea.

There was a man in front of me in the queue in tesco's buying condoms.
When the cashier asked if he needed a bag, he said "No, she isn't that ugly"

I read somewhere that Boris removed railings from London Bridge when he was mayor.

They fired 47 (not 80!!!) bullets because the guys had suicide vests on and they had to make sure they were dead so they didn't trigger the vests. It was not known at the time that the vests were fake. In America, this sort of thing is known as "death by cop".

There is only an exceptional percentage of elite marksmen that can make sure one bullet kills the target and the average armed police man is not in that tier.

I have no objection to the amount of bullets used despite how high that number seems.

I am aware of "collateral damage" but if those vests were real, the person who got winged by a bullet may well have been very much dead.

Maybe so, and I understand that the decision to shoot to kill has to be made on the spot in what must be a highly stressful situation. I don't think it is a good idea for that decision to be in the hands of farmers and gun nuts.

Oh christ, no!!! I worry about some of the gun licence notices we receive here for patients that don't seem entirely stable or responsible to me...

Most people into weapons who I have encountered should not be allowed to own anything sharper than a wooden spoon.
