Cream @ Amnesia - Ibiza 2010 - Reviewed

Reported by K8-e / Submitted 21-09-10 07:04

Cream is one of the original super clubs from back in the day. I remember visiting Ibiza back in the summer of 2000 and looking on in amazement as a guy strolled round the pool with a Cream logo tattooed on his arm. I was in shock that someone would indelibly mark themselves with a club logo and this was way before it became 'fashionable' to do so. So between that, being a massive Oakenfold fan and one of the first club CDs I owned being "Cream Live" from 1995, the club always held a fascination for me, it was mysterious and it was epic but the mission to Liverpool always seemed too far so we never went. It seemed fitting then that my first visit to Cream would be in Ibiza this summer.

Although I’m going to review the 19th August I actually found myself in Cream on my first Ibiza visit of 2010 (yes I’m greedy and have been twice this year!) a few weeks prior on 29th July. The first visit was actually totally impromptu as we were going home on the Friday and hadn't planned to go out, famous last words, so I’ll use both experiences to paint my picture.

So Ibiza 2, as I’m lovingly calling the second visit, was actually a weekend break starting on the Thursday which was fun as Cream is on a Thursday night at Amnesia. So we touched down in Ibiza at 5:30pm and literally had a few hours to sort ourselves out, familiarise ourselves with the hotel and our surroundings and then get ready (four girls, one bathroom – you do the maths) and then get down to the club. Not wanting to be too late we set off to before midnight only to find ourselves hanging around outside as it didn’t open till 12:30am. Schoolgirl error maybe but we weren’t the only early birds as people milled around the car park while the staff set up. My friends were sure it opened at midnight last year and I was sure it was pretty rammed when I was in there at 1:00am a few weeks previously but there was little we could do what with it being in the middle of the island and not really near anywhere. So we waited, always an eternity when one of you needs the ladies room!

So fact fans, the name Amnesia comes from “The Workshop of Forgetfulness”. A name given to the original discotheque there in 1976. Named by Antonio Escohotado he wanted to express that when people go out at night it is to forget their problems and indulge in an unknown world away from the routine. The club stands on that same spot today, a rich part of the island's history and it's certainly still a place people go to get away from the routine and forget their problems soothed by the aid of those disco beats!

The club opened just after 12:30am and people started to trickle in. I was happy to get into the club fairly early giving me a chance to look around and check out the actual space of both rooms and the feel of the club when it wasn’t quite so full. For those of you who haven’t been to Amnesia it really is a breathtaking club and an awesome space. Actually on my first visit we were in the second room for a good while thinking it was the main room (that’s how big both rooms are). Of course I wasn’t going to make that mistake this time and we worked our way around the club soaking up the space and the lights and becoming acquainted with our surroundings. The main room has one of the most awesome dj booths I’ve ever seen. Elevated to balcony height with lighting spelling out the djs name all round and lasers that take your breath away it really is the epitome of a superclub and the second room isn't too shabby either (you can check out the pics below of Eddie and Deadmau5 in the first and second rooms respectively) I can only begin to imagine what it would be like to play there as a dj!

One of the perks of reviewing a night can be that you are sometimes lucky enough to get VIP which in this case I did. The VIP area is up on the balcony in both rooms, although we quickly learned some parts were out of bounds to those not willing to spend €1,000 on alcohol at the tables. Ouch! But the rich and famous and weird and wonderful all come out to play in Ibiza and the tables weren’t empty for long. Still the view of the dj and the dance floor from the balcony were immense and I was grateful for the seating given I can’t walk far, a big thanks to Cream for this.

Setting the pace for the night was John O’ Callaghan. I’m a big fan of John’s productions but have never seen him play so this was a real treat for me. Trance was always my first love when it came to clubbing from when I was converted to 'proper' clubbing back in 1999. In recent years I’ve strayed from the fold but what a night to revisit it on. Like meeting an old friend I found myself reminiscing about times gone by and there were points I genuinely felt I was back in the hey day of clubbing, the glory times! I almost felt like sending the world a postcard – “Trance and clubbing are alive and well, living in Ibiza, call off the search party”. Now I’m sure there are people reading this going out to club nights in the UK who will say clubbing isn’t dead and trance isn’t dead and I know those things – it’s very much tongue in cheek on my part but you get my drift? It's thousands of people raving, it's trance, it's epic! It really could have been my 1999.

Anyway I digress, the crowning moment of John's set for me was when he played “Find Yourself” which of course send the crowd nuts. I'm not sure what version as it wasn't the hands in the air Cosmic Gate remix I love but all in all I was really impressed and it fitted well with his set which was was techy and chuggy and a great warm up.

The club had taken a bit longer than I expected to fill (given how busy it was previously) however it was time for Ferry Corsten to take to the helm. Again I’m a big fan of Ferry’s productions and whilst I didn’t recognise many tunes he continued to build the night and played one of my favourite tunes of his “Made of Love” which got a rousing response. No sooner had I thought about it not being so busy and then suddenly it was, everywhere, and this included the second room. Deadmau5 had come on and the room was chock-a-block. My friends went in to watch some of his set and were blown away. At this point I was firmly tranced-up and there was no way I wanted to fight my way through the crowds to catch a glimpse of the mouse man. I’m fairly sad I didn’t given the room was heaving, the atmosphere electric and I think for many Deadmau5 was the set of the night but you can't be everywhere! I actually managed to catch my favourite Deadmau5 tune “I Remember” when I was wandering back from the bar and I stayed and danced to that which pleased me.

Deadmau5 packing out the second room: Cream @ Amnesia

Speaking of the bar, don’t go clubbing in Ibiza unless you are prepared to part with some serious cash or be thirsty for the night. Amnesia was pretty pricey, what with this being the second time I'd visited the Island this year I was used to obligatory €7+ for a bottle of water and €12+ euros ish for a drink and mixer that is standard in most Ibizan clubs. Harsh!

So the last dj of the night to come on was the main man Eddie Halliwell. I’d actually caught some of his set during my previous visit as he was on before Paul van Dyk that time. Despite it being ridiculously rammed I’d managed to enjoy quite a few tunes, including a remix of Delerium’s classic “Silence” before PVD took over and this time again I managed some tunes but not quite a full set before we had to leave – one day Eddie I will catch a full set!! Needless to say the place at this point was rammed and it was going off big time in both rooms. The aftermath of Deadmau5 still meant the second room was heaving as well as we literally battled our way to leave the club and head back to the hotel in a taxi. It really is crazy how busy the club gets!

Amnesia is an amazing venue, steeped in Ibizan history, and Cream a legendary club night still going strong after all this time. Together they created one of the most fantastic trance nights I’ve ever witnessed. In fact some of the lads I was with previously had said they felt every night of their clubbing lives had led them to that point! Praise indeed. From my own perspective it was mighty impressive and if you are visiting Ibiza for the closing parties or thinking of going next year and you want to get your trance trousers on I can’t think of a better club night or venue to do it in. I can guarantee you will be blown away.

Cream @ Amnesia - every Thursday until the end of September. Check out http://www.cream.co.uk/ for more info.

I went last week - Chris Lake & Deadmau5 were amazing, and I caught JOC dropping some classics at the end of his set! (Too drunk to remember what they were, Veracocha I think!!)
