On the NuBorn rave bus with Tony Duzzit and Micky Fallout

Veterans of the rave scene, Tony Duzzit and Micky Fallout know their parties. So given the current state of clubbing, what would possess them to launch a new night at the 414 this Saturday 28 March? With Tony having newly acquired a driver’s license and a people carrier, we jumped inside the NuBorn rave bus for a night on the town in London, taking in a couple of psychedelic parties along the way…

Travelling up to London from deepest darkest Kent, the guys finally arrive in Brixton just before the midnight hour, and as we’re trying to get to One Tribe’s SunDance party in Tufnell Park, North London, in time to see Laughing Buddha’s agent Simon B play in the prog room, it doesn’t leave much time for chit chat. Laughing Buddha is one of NuBorn’s main inspirations and they’re ecstatic about having booked him for the launch of their new event, Psy Dance. They both agree — a rare thing as we’ll learn during the night out — that they’d been waiting a long time to hear a set like the one they heard him play at Boom last year. And another rare thing they appear to agree on is that, in their opinion of course, most of the music they heard at Boom was way too dark at night. Welcome to the NuBorn rave bus, which so far appears to be a rather refreshingly bullshit free zone.
Unfortunately my sense of direction is not one of my strong points and thinking I was following the map on HF we end up on the wrong side of Holloway Road. Fortunately however in my quest for some decent music to do the dishes to earlier in the day I’d come across an unopened copy of Liquid Records’ ‘Build Your Own Reactor’ in amongst my absent flatmate’s CDs, so the Duzzitmobile was going off to the sounds of Tron and Voice of Cod as I did my best to mess with Tony’s sense of direction and find the party.

Eventually we get to the Dome, no thanks to the HF map; my first time at the venue (hence the initial disorientation, nothing to do whatsoever with my sense of direction) and surely not my last. After a warm welcome from One Tribe promoter Niss we get a drink and find a cozy corner to settle for a chat.
I’m curious as to how these hardcore party goers first got into doing what they, well, do. As Duzzit fondly recalls: “I first got into dance music at the start of the illegal raves in UK in 89. It was the acid house days. I was 15 when we started going out to music like D-Mob’s ‘We Call It Acieed’ (1988), that kind of stuff is what basically got me into it. I started buying vinyl and DJ’ing house parties. That probably was about 17/18 years ago. Then eventually I started my own promotions company, E-Z Promotions, and that became E-Z Duzzit.” Meanwhile Micky was “into electro… Malcolm McLaren and all that rubbish!”

“Run DMC and all that”, Tony remembers. “ LFO! And that’s when the baselines started changing! When the speakers went on a bit of a humming mission! It went from electro to acid house and then hard house. When it first started that’s just what it was called in the ’99 era. I used to go to Dalston to a club called the Labyrinth to hear Jimmy J and Kenny K.” “Me too!” Micky recalls. “It was a murky little club on two levels…” “Twice the size of the 414,” Tony says. “Then there was dungeons! London Dungeons”, Fallout interrupts. “But we weren’t from London so it was all an adventure”.

This was just before things really took off though. As Tony remembers: “ ’91 was when the illegal rave circuit first kicked off. There’d be at least 50 cars and no one knew where the party was! You’ve have to go to some pub and wait. Then you’d finally get there and people would still be setting up.” Micky starts getting excited at the thought: “ I remember when I played at Spiral Tribe NYE in ’91. There were dogs running round inside, it was proper psychedelic!”

“It was two quid to get in and I went for days!” Tony grins. “I went to one in Kent and it was a three day thing. The police tried to close it and all they couldn’t get to it as the speakers were as long as the lorry and as high!”
“I’ve been to some wicked Spiral Tribes,” Micky reminisces. “At Castle Morton there were 20,000 people! Ed Real was there too! But then the Criminal Justice Bill was passed in 92 and stopped it all immediately.”
“Hence going into the clubs!” Tony says wistfully.
“Every single weekend I’d go out on a Thursday and come back on a Tuesday,” Micky smiles. “We had a 13 bedroom squat, it was wicked!”

“I went to Club UK and Sunnyside Up until 2006,” Tony remembers. “Club UK was really good. But then it was busted… so we went to Sunnyside up in Holburn at the Leisure Lounge on a Sunday. In 1997 we launched our own promotion called E-Z Promotions in a function room of a hotel and as I was doing Sunnyside up I called it the Sunnyside Up Special. It was my first gig on the circuit and I had a promoter Hamish from SSU ring me 2 days before the party – ‘cos I didn’t know anything about promotions, it was my first time – and say, you can have the party, but just don’t have another 1! I booked Skol for that! The police turned up beforehand but the party was still good. It finished about 2am with loads of complaints from the neighbours. The police kept turning up but they let me do it until the end. We had a 30 foot marquee! And that’s how E-Z Duzzit was born!”

I feel like we’re just getting into the start of something interesting, for E-Z Duzzit Promotions ran some great parties back in the day, while at the same time giving Tony a platform to carve his DJing reputation as hard house DJ Dr Duzzit. But the night is cracking on without us and we’ve already missed some great music whilst chatting. It’s now time to head back upstairs for Journey’s live set, for Jay OM from Free Spirit Records is showcasing his debut album, ‘The Man Who Sold the Time’. He plays a stormer of a set including the album’s title track and the epic ‘2012’, his compilation with M-Theory’s Marchello, who’s just put together Free Sprit’s new compilation, ‘Plexure’.
Sonic Species & Journey @ OneTribe
For me it’s over too soon, but already the NuBorn guys are getting itchy feet and keen to head to the next party. However I refuse until I’ve seen Sonic Species, who was well worth staying for. Tracks like ‘Lost Transmission’ and ‘First and the Last’ win Micky over for a while, but despite James Compressor putting on a typically-high energy start, soon we’re back in the rave bus and heading south to a secret location.

Tony and Micky had already alluded to the Criminal Justice Bill of ’92, which effectively forced parties out of fields and warehouses and into bars and clubs. Luckily there are still a few places around where you can still relax and partly safely and soon we’re fortunate enough to find one for a couple of hours, before heading back to mine to relax in the garden. Happily the SunDance had paid off, for we were treated to a gorgeous afternoon of drinks in the sunshine. And after a few drinks in the sunshine it all started to make sense. As much fun as the night had been, given the violence at squat parties over the previous couple of weeks, the only way forward for a hassle-free night out is to put your party on in a club, which is exactly what NuBorn are doing this weekend at the 414.
Showcasing tracks from their debut album 'Special Effects' as well as some new tunes hot off the press from the studio, their set alone is worth the trip to Brixton. The fact they've booked one of the biggest headliners the 414 has seen in a long time — Laughing Buddha — is a sign of their commitment, for it's Laughing Buddha and Fearsome Engine who've helped put them on this path, after their moment of inspiration at Boom Festival. And having been around parties for such a long time, you just know it's going to be a good one

NuBorn is chuffed to announce the launch of new night Psy Dance. Aimed at showcasing the best in all forms of psychedelic trance — from the funkier more chilled sounds to progressive, daytime full-on to some of the darker night-time stuff — we’ll be kicking off at Brixton’s newly refurbished Club 414 on Saturday 28 March.
To celebrate the launch we’ve asked down some of our favourite psy trance artists. Laughing Buddha aka Jeremy van Kampen has been leading the psy scene for over 20 years and we’re honoured to have him as our first headliner. Now signed to Nano Records, he’s currently working on his debut album. Having toured the world as a DJ and as part of various live acts — including the awesome Fearsome Engine with Tristan — he may have played all over Europe, North and South America and Australasia, but this marks his first time at the 414! Anyone who saw his euphoric sets at last year’s Glade or Waveform Festivals will know to get there early and get a good spot on the dancefloor.
NuBorn are Tony Dr Duzzit and Mickey Fallout aka System Pusher. Veterans of the hard dance scene, they’ve recently defected to psychedelic trance. In 2008 they launched their label NuBorn Digital with engineer Nick Sagar-House and released the awesome debut album ‘Special Effects’, testament to their passion for fusing the most interesting elements of hard and psy trance. Their set will contain loads of ‘Special Effects’, as well as test-drive some of their wicked new tracks.
Metaphase aka Fabrizio Motta and Zeus aka Peter Well co-own PointZero Records and have been tirelessly promoting psy trance through their Roots parties and as residents of Antiworld. Psy Dance is the London launch party for their new compilation CD ‘Radioactivity Meltdown’. The final part of their groundbreaking Radioactivity trilogy, it contains tracks from The Commercial Hippies, Timelock, El Nino, Materia vs Sinerider, DJ Peace, Groove System, Mindwave, Sunny Cloud and of course Metaphase himself.
They’ll be joined by PointZero and Antiworld ressie Sutekh. Perhaps just as well known for his crazy on-stage antics and taste in haircuts as his driving uplifting psy trance, this is an artist who embraces the role of the DJ as performer and entertainer head on. If you’ve seen him play, you won’t forget how much energy he gives the dancefloor!
Another industry veteran, Prozak has been DJ’ing for the past 14 years and is truly in a class of his own. Having played alongside some of the worlds most famous DJs — Astrix, Paul Van Dyke, Jeff Mills and Tiesto — we’re looking forward to one of his monumental euphoric psychedelic trance sets.
Last year psy trance took Sati to Lake Deczno in her homeland Poland, where she was the only female artist to play at the Ramada Festival. At Psy Dance she’ll be treating us to some of her impeccably mixed uplifting full-on psy.
Holder and Aslan start the night with progressive to get you in the groove and warm up those dancing shoes.
