Putting the house in hard house: introducing Scott Fo-Shaw

Reported by K8-e / Submitted 04-07-07 19:10

I started talking to Scott about a year ago when he posted one of his tunes for feedback on HF. An enthusiastic and friendly guy we soon got to chatting regularly and it wasn't long before I was playing his tunes out and banging on about what an amazing talent this lad was going to be. Well fast forward a year and here we are. With a discography as long as your arm, remixes for the legendary Tidy, engineering, collaborations and gigs aplenty and most recently being named as the Tidy Boys current favourite producer on their radio show, you wouldn't think all this was possible from someone not even old enough to actually go clubbing. At the tender ago of only 17 Scott Fo-Shaw is fast becoming one of the brightest talents in our scene, so it's about time you guys got to know him a little better.

"Scott is definitely one of the brightest young talents on the hard house scene at present. Considering he is only 17, his tunes are turning heads and are helping bring back the good vibes in the clubs! One to watch for the future and a sound lad as well!" Sam Townend, Tidy.

Hey Scott!! Welcome to your first Harderfaster (and indeed your first ever!) interview. How you doing?

Hi. I’m good thanks been looking forward to this interview for a while!

Let’s quickly chat about your name as I know you get asked this a lot! Where did Scott Fo-Shaw come from?

Well my first name is Scott and my last name is Forshaw (not Shaw). Take away the ‘r’ and you have one Scott Fo Shaw!

You are fast making a name for yourself in the hard house scene but some may not realise your only just turned 17 in January, when I started clubbing you hadn’t even started secondary school! Firstly how did you get into DJing and making music when you are still too young to set foot in a club the other side of the decks?

Haha! I got into DJing just after I’d turned 13. I had just started a new school and a mate’s older brother had some decks so I think I asked for a bash. After my first attempt at mixing I think I virtually lived at his house until I managed to buy my first pair of decks. I even used to take my own records and headphones over on a weekend. I was into trance when I first got into it for a year or so but somehow started playing hard house along the line and really got into the older more groovy side of it. Never been a big fan of filth to be honest.

And what about production specifically, what made you decide to start making tunes and how did you get clued up on what to use and how to do it?

I got into making my own tunes 3 or 4 months after I got into DJing. I started using Fruityloops, but they were all pretty sh*t so I concentrated more on the DJing side of things for a while. I really started to get clued up and my tunes started to get good after I had been in the studio with a professional. I was 15 and managed to blag some studio time with Chris Hoff. I picked up loads of things off him and that’s where my productions started to take off and I really got into it after that. From a personal point of view I think my tracks are getting better all the time with every new tune I make.

Me too! With an impressive discography already (www.myspace.com/scottfoshaw), collaborations with the likes of GRH, Digital Kid, Chris Hoff, The Colonel and more recently Tidy’s new label manager Sam Townend things are really moving for you. Originally your first collabs were using engineers but now you are doing the engineering in a very short space of time, how have you found the transition?

I really prefer engineering for myself than having some one else engineering for you because you know exactly what kind of track you want to make, and what sounds you want. When you use and engineer it can sometimes be really hard to get your ideas across to them. That’s one of the things that made me really determined to be able to engineer my own tracks. I also really enjoy engineering for other people because sometimes I run out of ideas and its great when your engineering for someone who really knows what they’re on about and has loads of ideas but on the other hand it can be awful when someone comes in with no ideas and just expects me to do all the work with them having any input.

“Putting The House In Hard House” is your mantra and I think for those not familiar with your sound that accurately describes what you are doing, a sound made popular by Untidy Dubs back in the day. What drew you to the funkier edge of hard house and what do you say to those critics who say it’s not really moving the scene forward?

Well maybe it’s not the most innovative kind of music out there, but hard dance in general isn’t particularly innovative. I personally think that the hard house sound in general needs to slow down a little bit and go back to the roots to become more housey and appeal to a slightly more commercial market, without being too cheesy and commercial. I think that sub-genres such as filth and NRG have their place but they have seemed to have lost a lot of the fun the music used to have.

You’ve remixed for Carl Nicholson, Chris Shaw and Adz to name a few but your most recent remixes for Tidy (Miss Behavin’ - Such a Good Feelin’ and Handbaggers – U Found Out and now DJ GRH & Maddox’s New York New York) are set to bring your name to an even wider audience. How did these remixes come about?

Well originally my remix of Such A Good Feeling was a bootleg and I sent it to Sam (Townend) a while back before he was in charge of Tidy and he really liked it and had been playing it out quite a lot, so when he became head of Tidy a few months back he wanted it for the label. The Handbaggers remix came about because Sam wanted more than one track to release and said I could remix any track I want that had ever come out on Tidy! As for New York New York, that was something Gary (GRH) suggested so I thought I’d go for it and now Tidy have picked it up so its all good!

And tell me about your Scrotty alias? I’ve heard a wicked Pretty Green Eyes remix from you, can we expect to see you delving into the world of hardcore more?

Yes, definitely! I’m just about to start some original projects and I’m going to be doing a collaboration or two with Stace; who has done vocals for the likes of BK, Carl Nicholson and Olly Perris. I might also do a few more cheeky hardcore bootlegs!

Are there any other genres you are interested in trying your hand at?

I quite fancy something like breaks or maybe even trance. Its just very hard finding the time to fit it all in at the moment but I’m sure I’ll be able to squeeze in a bit of time for it in the future

You are fast making a name for yourself as a DJ having played for nights like Nu Religion, X-Static and most recently Storm’s Next Generation. What has been your most memorable set to date and why?

Storm wins hands down! The main room there is immense, the sound system is fantastic and sound PHAT plus the reaction from the crowd was amazing! Loved every second of it! Can’t wait to play there again (if they’ll let me!).

As part of the nu-breed of talent up and coming in the hard house ranks you are off to quite a start. Who else do you rate production and DJing wise that we should be watching out for?

At the moment I’m really into a lot of Tom Parr’s tunes. They’re really well produced and even his harder tunes have a bit of funkiness to them which is quite refreshing. The other person who I’m really digging at the moment is Iridium; I’m not the biggest fan of Hard Trance but his stuff is amazing and the fact he’s made one of my favourite hard house tunes lately makes me like him even more!

Not content with DJing and producing you are about to launch a new digital label in collaboration with Carl Nicholson. Tell me more about Presence and your involvement – what can we look forward to from this new label?

Well first off its not just mine and Carl Nicholson, there’s a few of the best up and coming DJs and producers running different areas of the label. Each of the different label is colour coded a bit like the Nukleuz labels. There is a really wide variety of musical styles too and each label will have around 5 releases per quarter. The first releases should be out in September so watch out for them!

Presence Red – Myself – Funky Hard House
Presence Green – Iridium – Hard Trance
Presence Purple – Jody 6 – Hard Dance
Presence Blue – Adrenaline Dept – Psy Trance
Presence Orange – My Dirty Self – Electro
Presence Yellow – Audio Hedz – Hard House/Bounce

www.myspace.com/presencerecordings

What’s coming up on Presence Red that we can look forward to?

There tons of good stuff! Every track I’ve signed I’m loving at the moment. The first release is an EP by Tom Parr which quite frankly is the dog’s bollocks. I’ve been caning the tunes on there for a while now and I’m still playing them. The 2nd Release is a track called Free Your Mind by Louis Fernio; the original is a nice funky warm up tune and I’ve remixed it along with Iridium. My remix is quite groovy and has a big electro riff and Iridium’s remix is a top notch hard trance workout which is being supported by Technikal at the moment.

You’ve achieved so much in such a short space of time, what goals will you be setting yourself for the next year?

Well I want to start playing out a bit more regularly on average at the moment I’m getting two or three gigs per month and I want to bring this up to about five or six by the end of the year. Also I want to get more tunes on vinyl and possibly play at a Tidy Weekender next year.

What’s your current chart?

1. Scott Fo-shaw – Try It Baby (CDR)
2. Gazz Hunt – Get This Bitch (Presence Red CDR)
3. Tim Clewz – Headspin (Toolbox)
4. Scott Fo-shaw, Morgan & Deano – Got Me Crazy (CDR)
5. Paul Maddox & DJ GRH – New York New York (Scott Fo-shaw Remix) (Tidy CDR)
6. Iridium – Bass Jerkin’ (Presence Red CDR)
7. Louis Fernio – Free Your Mind (Scott Fo-shaw Remix & Original Mix) (Presence Red CDR)
8. Handbaggers – U Found Out (Scott Fo-shaw Remix) (Tidy CDR)
9. 10. BK – It’s Just A Feeling (BK’s Back To ’99 Remix)
10. DJ Drummer – Drummer Gets Digital (Presence Red CDR)

Top 3 tunes of all time?

Dark Monks – Insane (Steve Murano Remix)
Bizarre Inc. – Playing With Knives
99th Floor Elevators – Hooked (OD404 Remix)

If you had to pick your ultimate line up for a night who would be on it and where would it be?

It would be in an empty swimming pool in the snow (so drinks stay cold) and all girls have to wear clubbing gear:

Sam Townend & Deano vs Morgan: 9-10
Paul Maddox: 10-11
Steve Thomas: 11-12
Paul Janes: 12-1
Andy Farley vs Ian M vs Fergie (Trade Set): 1-2
Nick Sentience B2B BK: 2-3
MDA & Spherical Live PA: 3-4
Kutski: 4-5
Dom Sweeton vs Superfast Oz: 5-6

Tasty!! I think the girls would be frozen come 10pm though. Brrrrr. Given back to back gigs are all the rage these days if you could pick anyone to go back to back with who would it be and why?

I love playing back to back with Chris Shaw; his style is a bit harder than mine but still groovy and it always seems to work well when we play together. If I could play back to back with anyone it would have to be Steve Thomas or Maddox, they are both legends!
