The Elixir of Life is back, this time with a little extra special something to ignite the divine and creative spirit that exists in each and every one of us…
Bringing together a tantalising concoction of art and music, the sounds of a psychedelicious line-up will resonate with the soul-invigorating works of American visionary artist Android Jones A very special night for lovers of visionary art, it will feature an exhibition of the artist’s works and a live visual performance of his digital art.
Headlining the musical side of things is one of the pioneers of dance music, Alex Paterson of The Orb Soundsystem. Jenna Roberts tracked him down for an exclusive HarderFaster interview...
Hi Alex, how has your summer been? Any festivals this year?
Hello, we have been playing a few festivals this year. In Poland, Ireland, Hungary & Denmark as well as festivals in England, such as Sunrise & the Bearded Festival.
We are very much looking forward to having The Orb Sound System playing at Elixir of Life on October 1st, what can we expect from you?
Newer tunes & old classics, with Eric Von Skywalker on the mike & with FIL our Orb Sound System Soul Brother.
How do you think the London Underground scene has changed since the early ’90s? Do you miss the days of legendary parties such as Return To The Source?
Sorry bit before that it was Schoom & Land of Oz & Spectrum parties, they had the best music & the best looking girls to party with; also loud noise was a legend too! It’s all visa debit & digital downloads these years, 21st century big brother is looking out for you, your business is their business.
As the founder and only core member of The Orb, how would you describe its journey over the past 20+ years?
Round, fast, quick & very loveable, The Orb has become a 21st century young woman with pioneering sounds & lights that are as much part of the now as the nue is to the old.
Is it true that you are working with Jimmy Cauty (Orb Co-founder & KLF member) on a new version of ‘Space’, the album that you guys had originally worked together on back in 1990, just before he left The Orb? Have you always maintained a good relationship with him, and other ex-Orb members?
Trying to, when Jim finds the original tapes & bakes them. I try to maintain a healthy relationship with the old school Orb crew.
You’re a very busy man...You always seem to be working on lots of different types of creative projects – 2010 saw the release of ‘Metallic Spheres’ (a collaboration with Youth & Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour), You’ve made a short film ‘Battersea Bunches’, and there has also been talk of an Orb-inspired opera in 2012/13. Are you always on the lookout for new creative projects, or do they find you?
I go looking & things fall into place with the help of faith, hope & Orb-world colonies to cater for all, youth or auld. We are releasing ‘C-batter-C’ on Malicious Damage on the 11.11.11. It’s a short film with remixes by various friends like HFB , Gaudi & David Harrow etc. The film has also been remixed. I have also just been recording in the Star House in east Germany with Thomas Fehlmann & Lee Scratch Perry, which is co-named ‘Orb-server’. Also as HFB we have created music for a video game called ‘Shooter’, out now as ‘HFB PIXELJUNKED THE OST TO SHOOTER 1 & 2’. Screen is a new project with a single called ‘15 minutes’ out soon. Screen are myself, Gaudi & Chester.
The opera is going ahead too, planned for Easter 2013, if we’re all still here that is! It’s part of the Opera Shoots project with the Covent Garden Opera House.
You’ve made the use of samples in music an art form, do you spend a lot of time searching for something special or do you hear something and think, ‘That would sound great in a track’?
Both & secrets never lie.
You were once described by The Guardian, as being ‘Music’s primary spokesperson on aliens’, due to heavy use of alien-inspired sounds and imagery in your work. If aliens landed on Earth today, what would they think of it?
They’re here already, didn't you know?
Would you pay to travel to space?
Would you? If I was rich enough, I would. Something like 15 sunrises & sunsets everyday. That’s mind blowing.
