The HeatUK 4th Birthday at The Brixton Academy... Goodgreef resident and virtuoso on the wheels of steel, please welcome... Eddie Halliwell.

Reported by Just call me HEAT UK / Submitted 15-09-05 21:19

Eddie Halliwell needs little introduction. Just turned 25, his face makes regular appearances on the front pages of the world’s dance music press. His rise to fame has been stratospheric — appearing on the scene only three years ago, and yet being crowned Mixmag magazine’s DJ of the Year in early 2004.

His mastery of all things tough, from trance to techno to hard dance, has meant his name has graced some enviably top class line-ups, including no less than three live Radio 1 Essential Mixes, and a residency at Jules’ renowned Ibizan party Judgement Sunday. His trademark technical abilities attracted the attention of massively respected company Pioneer, with whom he has collaborated on the design and development of their most cutting edge equipment.

The Heat 4th Birthday represents the first leg of Eddie’s ‘Fire It Up presents Bosh Live’ tour, comprising six colossal, and doubtless riotous parties across the UK. We’ve got him first though, and HeatUK is proud to present... Mr Eddie ‘Unstoppable’ Halliwell.

Heat’s gone back to the tough stuff with their birthday line-up. Are there any DJs that are too hard for you?

No one springs to mind immediately. It doesn’t really matter what style of music it is, it’s how it’s played. To be honest recently I don’t get a chance to listen to many other people in clubs.

What DJs do you admire from styles that aren’t so heavy on the bpm?

People like Carl Cox as a club DJ, but people I’ve been heavily into from when I started out are groups like Scratch Perverts, Q Bert, Plus 1… I’ve always followed what they’re into and really respected them.

Do you listen to any non-dance music?

I like listening to hip hop when I’m at home just for practising different techniques of scratching. I don’t really listen to music to chill out though, because whenever I’m in the car or near a CD player I’m listening to new music and demos. I get that much of it!

How much do you get?

God it’s endless. Now people can do their own thing and make their own tracks and burn them to CD… they’re handing you stuff left, right, and centre and I do try to listen to everything. It’s a hell of a lot.

You play at events that vary hugely in style. Do you have to work hard to fit into those line-ups or is your sound naturally versatile?

I am versatile, but you do have to work hard. It does take a lot of time, just from the point of view of listening to different styles of music. But I love music… I don’t just like one style, I like different genres. I like to play energetic and uplifting regardless of what I’m playing, there’s stuff that I play across the board… some of the music will cross over. At least now music’s digital you can carry a hell of a lot in your CD wallet!

You’re famously very technically able. Is it enough these days just to be able to beatmatch?

If you’re a massive producer you’ll get opportunities to DJ just from your production. If you’re a ‘DJ’ DJ, its very important to have different elements… all sorts of things. But as long as you’ve got something that the crowd responds to… that’s the most important thing. The technical side is just something I love, and I focus on it because I enjoy it.

You’ve been working with Pioneer, have they given you a load of free kit?

There’s been a few pieces sent that I’m very grateful for! They’ve just sent me a couple of the new 909 scratch mixers. I’ve just not long ago done a tour actually, with a few very select dates called the Pioneer 909 tour. It was two back to back mixers and 4 CDJs and it took a hell of a lot of setting up! It was a fantastic tour though — if you’ve got the perfect set up you can really work the crowd.

How was Ibiza this year for you?

Amazing. It‘s my fourth year as a resident with Judgement Sunday and it’s just got better and better. You hear all sorts of stories about ‘what it was like years ago’, and I can’t really comment, but from the clubs that I’ve been playing — I got to do Cream at Amnesia this year as well — it’s just got better and better for me. The vibe has been wicked.

When can we expect to hear Eddie Halliwell productions?

I’d love to at some stage. Literally I’m getting asked every day! The DJing world is changing so much though… DJing off so many different platforms and bringing new effects units to the stage… and that’s what I really get a buzz from. I want to stay fully on the ball because I’m a DJ at heart. When things settle down I’d like to get in the studio.

Summer's pretty much over. Got a nice tan? Some good memories?

It’s been amazing. I’ve not had much time to chill out with my friends though… I’ve been working while they’re spending a couple of days in the sun. I have managed to pick up a tan though with the odd day here and there sat by the pool. I’ve got Cream coming up as well — the closing party — but again I’ve got to shoot off while everyone else stays behind and parties!

Do you ever just take two weeks off and go on holiday?

I’ve not to be honest. The only time was at the beginning of this year, I did a week’s tour in east Asia and then a week in America, and I managed to spend a few days in Hawaii.

You must be exhausted.

I love it! Once a gig’s done there’s always something to be done, or getting back to.

Rumour is you’re quite shy. What does it take to get you to lose your inhibitions? A couple of glasses of champagne?

Champagne doesn’t agree with me, a couple of glasses knock me sideways! If I’m DJing I never have champagne, that’s one I’ve got to swerve. When I’m playing though I don’t need anything to get me going, if I’m getting a good response I almost end up jumping into the crowd.

Your guilty secret is…

There’s a few, but I wouldn’t like to say in an interview. The only ones I can think of I’ll get really dogged for!

More: What a year it has been. After the sell out success of 20,000 people on Clapham Common, the creators of South West Four return to the legendary Brixton Academy to celebrate four years of mayhem inside the Capital!

The story has now travelled far of the very first HeatUK party held in the promoter’s backyard. We’ve taken it up a few notches since then, here’s a preview of what you’ve got to look forward to tonight!

Our main room welcomes the skills of one of the most talked about DJs in the world today. At only 25-years of age Eddie Halliwell has set the world on fire headlining some of the biggest clubs in the UK. His technical wizardry behind the decks has thrilled audiences from Asia to Australia – the USA to Russia. Tonight HeatUK welcomes back the No. 25 in the world for an exclusive two-hour-set to kick off the London leg of the ‘Bosh! Live’ tour. He’s joined by Goodgreef legends Adam Sheridan and Alex Kidd. The former is one of the world’s fastest rising trance stars, the latter is the new name in hard house.

The sonic journey in the main arena continues with K90 performing an exclusive 90 minute LIVE set to celebrate the launch of his new ‘Destinations’ album. Featuring some of his hottest new tracks this is your chance to be blown away by one of today’s most talented producers. Mark Doggett (AKA K90) is a regular at our events. When you see his trademark energy you’ll know why!

And what would a HeatUK event be without our two residents, Ian Betts and Marc French. Ian returns fresh from his appearance at South West Four, Dance Valley and Cream – playing back to back with Phil Reynolds for the first time. Marc French recently headlined The Fridge for his own exclusive showcase, tonight he closes our birthday with the BPM’s going harder and faster!

The foyer is as fierce as ever and welcomes a first time ever performance from the superb Frantic resident – Andy Whitby. Jam-packed with legends old and new, the foyer is a favourite for the purists of the tough beats.

The Balcony Bar offers DJs from Sedition, Frenzied, DFS & Six Degrees providing the best deep, techy, minimal, funky twisted housey beats.

The VIP Room celebrates the talent of the local area: FLASHBAK, BAKLASH, SHINING, EKUALIBRIUM & VITAL... Be warned – this is the real up for it party crowd!

So there you have it, the ultimate clubbing night this September with the DJs that matter!
