If only they could actually keep them in!
Police paid convicted child rapist almost £10,000 to spy on 'sex parties' as part of Newcastle grooming investigation
Informant employed to spy on grooming gang abusing vulnerable girls and young women
Police paid a convicted child rapist almost £10,000 to spy on “sex parties” as part of an investigation into a grooming gang in north-east England, it has emerged.
Details of the operation can be reported after 17 men and one woman were convicted of abusing underage girls and vulnerable young women between 2010 and 2014.
More than 700 victims have been identified in the investigation code-named Operation Sanctuary, which has similarities to the grooming scandals in Rotherham and Rochdale.
Trials have been underway since 2015 but can now be reported for the first time after reporting restrictions were lifted.
The men, mostly aged in their 30s and 40s and from Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi backgrounds, were found guilty of offences including rape, sexual assaults, drug crime and trafficking for sexual exploitation a series of trials at Newcastle Crown Court.
The 13 victims of sexual offences, whose ages ranged from 15 to their early 20s, were abused at specially-convened “parties” where they were supplied with drugs and alcohol, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

After reading about Rochdale and watching Three Girls I can understand the police using anything they can to gather intelligence and break these rings.
But something doesn't add up...
700 victims were identified, another 108 are mentioned in the article. That's an extraordinary number, far more than I've heard anywhere else. But it goes on the say "13 victims of sexual offences".
Who were the other victims and what of?
18 convicted, after reporting restrictions were lifted at the end of a series of trials.
Were these 18 responsible for all 800+ victims? If so, that is truly shocking! Or are there are more trials to come?

i guess on whether they were able to get all the victims to come to trial or not, but they are huge numbers

The BBC account is more complete
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-40879427
Quote:
| The 17 men and one woman were convicted of rape, supplying drugs and conspiracy to incite prostitution.
Over the course of four trials, 20 young women gave evidence covering a period from 2011 to 2014.
These trials involved 26 defendants, who were mostly Asian, facing a total of more than 100 charges and 22 victims.
Those prosecuted were from the Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indian, Iraqi, Iranian and Turkish communities and mainly British-born, with most living in the West End of Newcastle.
Of the 26, three people have been jailed. The rest will be sentenced next month. |

Quote:
| The investigation is ongoing and to date has resulted in 461 arrests. Police have spoken to 703 potential complainants and 278 victims have been identified.
Due to its size, the investigation was split into a number of spin-off operations.
Operation Shelter uncovered groups of men in the West End of Newcastle - many of whom were known to each other - who exploited vulnerable young women and girls over a period from 2010 to 2014.
This eventually led to four separate trials, the first commencing in September 2015 and the final one which has just concluded, allowing previous reporting restrictions to be lifted. |
|
Seems like these trials and convictions are the tip of the iceberg.
