The scene that really jumped on the CD as a format was Psy-trance (Goa trance) which previously had been mainly DAT based. This was because of the heat in Goa/India which made vinyl unsuitable because of warping, and also because so many productions were home made. Once it became easier to burn CD's off a PC this became the format of choice and it became a regular occurence for psy parties to not have any vinyl decks back around '97 or so.
I know we used to have decks, CDJ's and dat at parties around that time, but it was common for psy DJ's to bring their own CDJ's to play on, then swap them out for the next DJ to play on theirs, and so on because the DJ's could never be guaranteed of finding CDJ's at a party.
