Dino Ciancamerla has April Babies

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 03-04-12 18:40

Dino Ciancamerla is a busy guy! As well as DJing all over the London club scene under his guise Neutrino which is signed to Furthur Progressions Records, he is also co-owner and head honcho of the unique festival brand Babies Events. With the long awaited return of the Babies parties kicking off on the 21 April 2012 at the Greyhound Bar, Streatham - I decided to grab a few minutes with Dino and find out how he is and how he juggles it all.

You were born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1982. When did your love of music first begin?

I was definitely born with a strong passion toward music. I have a very wide range in taste from the Cranberries to UB40 to Sting and The Beatles. Of course dance music is what really gets me excited.

What was the first record you ever bought?

The first Vinyl that I ever bought was a white label bootleg, which was a mashup of System F – Out of the blue, Perfect Phase - Slammer Jammer Man and Time Deluxe – Just won’t Do. I had heard it many times during the infancy of my clubbing days at the Gallery in Cape Town. A DJ named Basil used to play it all the time and I swore it would be the first record I would buy. It took me ages to find it though.

When did you start liking electronic dance music? Who were your early influences?

My love for dance music started at the age of 15 thanks to the legendary uplifting trance track System F – Out of the Blue. Ever since then I have been hooked. I started off with a love for hard house artists like BK, Anne Savage & Toni De Vit. I then moved on to Hard Trance artists such as Guyver, P.H.A.T.T, Greg Brookman and other Trance producers like Paul Van Dyk & Tiesto. But it was the release of Astrix – Eye to Eye and the legends that are Infected Mushroom that grabbed my attention toward the psychedelic side of things. Today most of these genres are amalgamated to create the various styles we have today. I love that music is transcending so many boundaries these days.

What brought you to London? What would you say are the similarities and differences between the clubbing scenes in Cape Town and London?

Cape Town is an amazing place to live, but it is a place unto itself. Which means that although it is very cosmopolitan, it remains detached, distance wise, from the rest of the world. I always new I wanted to experience London and the opportunities it has to offer. Party wise, I would say that the indoor clubbing scene in London is far more diverse and supported than the clubbing scene in CPT. However the Outdoor festivals in Cape Town are in a league of their own – of course the weather helps.

You’ve been DJing progressive and psychedelic trance for over 6 years under your DJ name Neutrino. How did you land your first gig? Where was it?

My first gig in London was at Ministry of Sound at one of the Wildchild events. At the time I was helping out with the event set up, which helped me to get my first gig.

You played at the legendary Universo Parallelo this New Year – what an amazing gig to land – how was it?

Hmmm sad story, although I was booked to play this amazing festival, sadly due to one reason or another I was unable to make it. But I am sure I will be there for the next one!

You’ve also tried your hand at production. How is this going? How would you define your sound as an artist?

Sadly the production side has taken a back seat and I have focused more of my energy on running my own events and DJing. I have a few tracks up on my soundcloud that represent both my love for the psychedelic genre as well as the uplifting trance from back when I first showed an interest in dance music. In fact, there you will find my own psychedelic adaption of System F – Out of the blue along with a few other nostalgic remixes.

I hope that one day I have more time to dedicate to my solo production.

You’re signed to the well respected Furthur Progressions Record Label, alongside artists such as Hamish and Cimi – how did this come about?

I first came into contact with one of the label owners, Hamish, at one of the legendary Dream Temple events at the Jacks Club in London Bridge. His DJ set really influenced my move to the more progressive, but still driving, side of psytrance. As soon as I had created my own event brand and started to throw my own events, Hamish was one of the first djs that I wanted to book. Over the years we have become friends, my music style has been refined to a style perfectly suited to the Furthur Progressions sound and so it seemed fitting for me to join the label as a DJ.

If you were stranded on a desert island – what three music albums would you want to have with you (assuming you had an ipod or portable CD player of course)?

Cell live in Ibiza (for chilling out), Astrix – Eye to Eye (for when I feel like stomping my feet) and UB40 (to have a change from dance music and to suit that island feel)

A.T.A.R.I Project was a brand that you co-owned and under which you put on some amazing events. We haven’t heard anything recently from this project; can you fill us in on what’s going on?

As with all collaborations, inevitably the time comes when the parties involved feel the need to go their own way. This is what has happed with A.T.A.R.I Project and so sadly it is no more. I have shifted all my energy toward my Babies Events brand now, which is growing from strength to strength.

Speaking of the Babies Events brand under Yeah Baby Productions run in conjunction with your girlfriend Kerry Dunlop. Tell us about this?

The “Babies Events” started in 2009 when a few of my friends, who were all sharing their birthday in March, asked me to throw them a joint birthday party. We called it March Babies.

After years of promoting and managing events for other brands I had been dying to create event of my own so that I could enjoy full control over the creative process, production and DJ line-ups. In June 2009 we went all out on our first event and had 450 people at June Babies. The “Babies Events” brand had been conceived and the rest is history.

After meeting my girlfriend Kerry in 2010 she joined the team and has been in instrumental part in brining the brand to where it is today. Our holding company is Yeah Baby Productions, which will involve many more facets of the industry in the years to come.

What inspired you to start promoting? What bits of the job do you like and dislike most?

I think in the very beginning the idea was just to get a foot in the door in order to get DJ sets. Over the years I have been involved with many London based brands. During this time I have learned a lot about how to run an event well, and also in many instances, how not to run an event. Being a creatively minded person there was so much that I wanted to do and starting my own brand was the only way I was going to achieve everything I wanted.

I love the social aspect of the job and mostly I love the production side. Conceptualizing, planning and implementing everything that goes into the creation of a great event where friends can have the time of their lives with other like-minded people.

I dislike anything that restricts our potential creativity.

You’ve put on many hugely successful ‘Babies Events’ over the last few years. Tell us what makes your parties so special and unique?

Firstly, the high level of quality production is something we have always prided ourselves on. Our décor and Stage designs are unlike anything else in the commercial scene in London thanks to our décor crew Global Village Productions. We always have the most amazing sound systems thanks to the guys from Element 5 Systems who build all of their own cabinets from scratch which add a very unique sound and styling to our events.

Secondly the unbelievable friendly, festival-like atmosphere, you get at a Babies Event is incredible. Despite having over 600 people at each event you still get the feeling that everybody knows everybody.

I will refer to a piece that was written about our brand that describes us to the tee.

“Imagine . . . Dancing outdoors in the blazing sun with your best friends, surrounded by magic & music. BBQ aromas fill the air. Creative arts and intriguing stalls allow you to interact with the enchanting festival environment. Talented Face painters deliver a splash of brilliance to an already radiant crowd. You might like to chill out in complimentary Shesha Lounge while absorbing the breathtaking décor and top quality music. The atmosphere is friendly and the drinks are affordable. This is what Babies Events are all about. Yeah Baby!“

The other concept, fundamental to our brand, is that if you share your birthday in the same month as one of our events, you can sign up to our website for a chance to get free entry.

Head to www.yeahbabyproductions.co.uk and sign up now.

) You’re hosting an event on the 21 April at the Greyhound Bar in Streatham, London called ‘April Babies Spring Festival 2012’ – what can people expect from this?

We are very excited about the events this year, as it will be the first time since the year that we started that we are throwing 3 events in one summer period.

We have some incredible brands hosting the various floors at our event in April.

Lucky Life Entertainment who are hosting the Open Air Main Stage are going to bring an awesome Ibiza feel to our already festival like outdoor area with the finest house music around. This will be their massive Pre-Ibiza blow out before they head to Ibiza and will see attractions including the legendary Ibiza Angels who will be delivering heavenly massages to our guests. There will also be a complimentary shisha lounge outside to add an extra element of festival styling.

Furthur Progressions Records will be commandeering the Main Inside Stage from sunset. Covering all things progressive, from the more techy side to start with all the way to the more driving side of the progressive genre and even a special guest set from full-on legends DEJAVOO to top it all off at the end.

In the 2nd room indoors we have the trance brand Alchemy who will be raising your euphoria with the finest uplifting trance DJs London has to offer.

Lucky Life Entertainment will also be filming this event exclusively for Lucky Life TV.

So all in all you can expect a very unique festival vibe lasting 12 hours with 3 rooms of music all for under £15!

Where do you see yourself a year from now? Where would you like to be and what would you like to be doing?

In a perfect world I would love to be able to split my time equally between my producing music, playing golf & throwing the most amazing events London has to offer. I would like to continue to expand Yeah Baby Productions with my girlfriend Kerry by using our wealth of contacts and experience to throw private events for anyone who may be interested.

Dino – many thanks for taking the time out to answer my questions. Can’t wait to party with you on the 21 April 2012 at the Greyhound Bar, Streatham!

It’s my pleasure, Yeah Baby !!!
