Out of curiosity.. What kind of news warrants the media making a big deal out it?

If you don't think a tower block full of families catching fire, in a developed country, isn't a big deal then I'm genuinely interested in what a big deal is?

I never said it wasn't a big deal, I just don't think it warrants a minutes silence.

Atrocities occur throughout the world on a regular basis, often in developed countries. The only time people give a toss is when the media make a big deal about of it or if it get labelled as a terror attack. The world is a bigger place than the EU or the US.

No minutes silence for those getting brutally murdered in Mexico due to cartels on a regular basis, people getting slaughtered in war torn countries etc...
People only care when the media say so.
If Grenfell had half the news coverage then there would have been no minutes silence, would have just been another news story you quickly forget.

Absolute Fact

I don't recall many minute silences for many things outside of the UK unless it is huge like 9/11.
The Manchester Bomb, the London Bridge attacks, the Finsbury Park attack... Grenfell. All massive events in the UK and all got minute silences.
Dave falls off a bike and dies... Well that's a shame but Steve will fall off his bike in a week and die and then Gary a couple of weeks later...
You're not dumb so you can surely see the difference between the mourning or mark of respects of unexpected death on a large scale and shit that just happens.

All of those you listed are exactly as you say "shit that just happens" but on a larger scale. It wasn't right that they died that way, I just don't think any of them are minute silence worthy.

They were all unexpected deaths (to my knowledge), the only difference is the number of those who died were larger at one time and happened within a very small geographical area. In terms of actual loss of life the numbers aren't all that great.

I see no need to have a minutes silence for people you never met, had no impact on your life and as far as I know never contributed anything life changing. Not being silent doesn't mean you aren't being respectful of them dying.

Absolute Fact

Don't observe one then. If you chose not to observe it in a place that others are trying to then I would say sitting there chatting might be seen as disrespectful... Let me know how you get on.

It seems others have the same dilemma when considering supporting or observing a minute's silence:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-41000266

Quote:
As the buzzer signalled the start of the 200 metre breaststroke final in the FINA World Masters Championships in Budapest, one competitor stood still as others raced away.

But Fernando Alvarez had not frozen, overawed by the occasion.

The veteran swimmer claims he requested a minute's silence be observed before the race, to honour of the victims of the attacks in Spain that killed 15.

When that request was refused, he staged his own poignant tribute.

Quote:
Writing on Facebook, Mr Alvarez's swimming club said they were overwhelmed by the attention that the post had received.

"In life you have to hold values above everything else," they wrote.

"It is a great example for our swimmers. All of his peers at his club feel very proud of him. We want to congratulate him for being a great person. For us he won gold."

FINA - the International Swimming Federation, which staged the championships - has faced criticism from social media users, with many people taking to the organisation's Facebook page to voice their concerns.

"Shameful not to keep a minute of silence," one social media user wrote.

"It was only one minute," another said.
