Preview to ElectronicSessions with Bryan Kearney

Reported by Roscosulli / Submitted 04-10-06 18:13

Bryan Kearney began djing five years ago and in this time has established himself firmly on the dance scene in Ireland. His sets contain the very best in upfront trance and techno, with the emphasis always on energy and the unexpected. His track with John O’Callaghan, ‘Exactly’, signed to Discover Records, was regarded by many as the track of the Winter Music Conference 06, and is a firm favourite of Armin Van Buuren and Paul Van Dyk. It has been remixed by one of his idols, Giuseppe Ottaviani of NU-NRG, has been requested for no less than eight album compilations, and is set to be one of the strongest trance packages to be released this year.

2006 has so far been a massive year, as he continues to develop his sound with various solo projects and collaborations in the pipeline. Combined with regular gigs at the Vaults in Dublin, his UK debut at Passion in Leicester and with continued dj bookings at home and abroad, the future certainly looks bright.

Roscosulli caught up with Bryan to find out a little more about him before he makes his eagerly awaited debut London appearance for Electronic Sessions and Kurruption present … The Far Side at Hidden, London on October 14th.

Hi Bryan, so how’s 2006 panning out for you so far?

Alright Ross, 2006 has gone beyond all expectations for myself. At the beginning of the year the scene in Dublin seemed to be non existent, but in the space of 9 months it has come back from the dead with some amazing line-ups in Dublin on a regular basis. At present I hold three residencies in Dublin for Letrik, Fusion and Trancelation.

I’ve also made three appearances in the UK so far this year at Passion, Home and Addiction with personally anticipated gigs for Electronic Sessions and Static in Preston still to come. If someone said to me at the start of the year I would be playing in the UK I wouldn’t have believed them!

What would you say best describes your sound at the moment?

The way I have always described my sound is a fusion of trance and techno with the emphasis always on energy and the unexpected. I’m not the type of dj to cue up a track for seven minutes and then just mix it in, I’d prefer to try and get three tracks mixed in the same amount of time, constantly keeping myself occupied and bringing something different to the dance floor.

Where’s your favourite place to play in Ireland, and what do you think in general of the scene over there?

At the moment, my favourite place would have to be The Vaults in Dublin. It’s situated below one of the main train stations in Dublin and has a really underground feel. The decor and lay out of the place is really cool as well and the atmosphere always seems to be spot on. Gabriel and Dresden played there in June and they described it as one of the best gigs they’ve ever played. Every single person in the room knew every track and every word to each song they played.

It was one of those nights that restores your faith in what can be a dwindling industry. The whole dance scene in Ireland at present is flourishing and its not just confined to Dublin. The scene in cities like Galway, Waterford and many other places throughout the country and also up the north seem to be flying with gigs for all genres taking place every weekend. Long may it continue.

Do you get to go out clubbing much, and what djs do you really admire?

I was a clubber before I was a dj and still remain an avid clubber. I’m just back from two weeks in Ibiza where I’ve been going nuts on the dance floor for two weeks. The dance floor is what it’s all about and that’s the most likely place you’ll find me on a big night, or when I’m finished my set.

The djs I really admire would be Marco V, Markus Schulz, Eddie Halliwell, Armin Van Burren, Matt Hardwick, John O’Callaghan, Ben Sims, Gabriel and Dresden, John Askew, Ben Sims, Carl Cox and many others. I’m a fan of djs that bring something different to their sets.

What is the best club you have ever played and why?

The best club I have ever played would have to be the infamous Temple Theatre in Dublin. I was a weekly regular in the club for the best part of three years, so to acquire my own club night in my favourite club at the age of 19was something beyond my wildest dreams. I put on three nights in the downstairs part of the club called ‘The Crypt’ and each night was a complete sell out. I was then moved upstairs to the main room to warm up for the likes of M.I.K.E, Lisa Lashes, Scot Project and billed alongside many of Ireland’s finest djs. Unfortunately due to many reasons the club shut down in September 2003, but the memories will forever remain.

Where are you yet to play that is an absolute must?

My number one aim for next year is to get on the line-up for an Irish dance music festival. You will not come across a better atmosphere in the world than at a festival in Ireland. John O’Callaghan was playing at this year’s event at 3 pm and the place was going nuts even at that early stage. He played that version of ‘I Predict A Riot’ and I’ve never seen a reaction like it in my life. Game over. Other dream gigs for myself would have to be the main room of Passion, Godskitchen, Goodgreef and The Arches in Glasgow. It will take a lot of hard work but hopefully I can make it to that stage... someday.

So have you been working on any material of late and what are your plans for 2007?

I have plenty of projects in the pipeline, the main one been my debut solo track for Discover entitled ‘SubCulture’. I also have a couple of non trance projects on the go and also a number of collaborations with various people waiting to get the go ahead. It’s hard to dedicate the time I would like to give to my music when I’m working eleven hours a day on a building site during the week.I just need to find the right balance between music, work and the nonsense that goes on at the weekends.

My plans for 2007 are to keep on going as I have been this year, by trying to keep my sets as innovative as possible and keep developing my sound in the studio. Myself and John have to ‘somehow’ come up with a worthy successor to ‘Exactly’. It’ll be difficult but I’m sure we can do it.

How did you get your first big break djing?

My first big break came when I got a show on the biggest dance station in Dublin in 2002. It was a prime time show on a Saturday night between ten and twelve. It gave me the opportunity to showcase the very best in upfront trance and techno on the same show which until then had never been done. At that time I was a massive fan of Italian tech trance, which was huge in Dublin at the time so at last people were able to hear the latest stuff on a weekly basis. Having my own show also gave me the opportunity to showcase new Irish talent and new Irish productions, mostly by myself and by John.

Admittedly the standard back then wasn’t as high as now but I have no doubts it aided the development of both myself and John’s productions. Unfortunately due to the music policy of the station being altered, something which I did not agree with, the show came to an end, but significant inroads had been made to get myself and others onto the dance scene in Dublin.

ElectronicSessions will be your first London gig, have you played many other places England?

I made my UK debut in the White Room at Passion in April which was fantastic as I got to play straight after a good friend of mine, Neal Scarborough. We brought a group of thirty people over with us, so it was a great buzz and a party that continued well into the next day. I’ve also played for Home in Doncaster in June alongside my producer of the year and one of the biggest gents in trance music, Sean Tya. It was a fantastic night and was all down to the hard work of Ash and Dwain. I also played for Addiction in Sheffield which was run by another gent, Kane Nelson. The gig was on the same day that England got knocked out of the World Cup so I was a bit apprehensive as to how the night would go and how would people would feel about an Irish dj playing on the night, but everything was fine and it was a great night. There are some great gigs in the pipeline for this year and beyond and I can’t wait to make my debut in London for Electronic Sessions.

Were you surprised by the success of your first major track ‘ Exactly’, or were you always confident it was always destined for big things? The response for this track has been phenomenal.

I’ve been blown away by the success of the track. Myself and John knew when we made the track that we had made something special, but had no idea it would be as big as it has been. To be honest, we thought that ‘Restricted Motion’ was going to be bigger than it was, but for some reason or another it just didn’t seem to grasp people in the same way that ‘Exactly’ has. A lot of the credit must go to John Askew and Chris Hampshire for their relentless work on getting this track out so quick and I think a big part of the success of ‘Exactly’ was that Armin and Paul Van Dyk were playing this track as soon as they got it. The fact that it was remixed by Giuseppe Ottaviani was incredible due to the fact that he’s one of my idols, so to have one of my idols remixing our track was outstanding.

We always knew it would be popular, but had no idea it would go on to achieve the success that it has. 15 compilations, played by every major dj on the trance scene, played 6 times at HI.FI Ireland in the Godskitchen arena and considered to be the anthem of the summer is something which myself and John are immensely proud of. The icing on the cake was standing on a podium in Amnesia last week watching and listening as Armin played it at 6 am to a packed club. It was nne of the greatest moments of my life!

Have you managed to relax and have a holiday this year?

I’ve managed to get away for two weeks to Ibiza but the word relaxation never came into the frame. I’m still in recovery mode and it’ll probably take me another week to get back to 50% of my normal self. I love Ibiza, it was my fourth year in a row going over and I can’t see myself ever going anywhere else on holiday, but it does get harder and harder to come home from there every year.

There’s something magical about Ibiza and only people that have been there can understand what I mean. The people, the special feeling over there and dance music 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It can be mental, it can be relaxing, it can be whatever you want it to be and its amazing. It’s my heaven on earth!

What football team do you support?

Manchester United since the day I was born. Every single person in my family supports them and I was named after one of their greatest ever players — Bryan Robson. United have had a good start to the season but there are too many players at the club who are not of a United standard. United need to win the league this year but I wouldn’t count on it when Darren Fletcher is a first team regular.

You’re a regular at the famous ‘Vaults Club’ in Dublin. Tell us more about this place and the renowned Irish crowd?

The Vaults has come into its own in the last year or so. It’s located underneath the main train station in Dublin City Centre, and has an amazing underground feel. There are two main vaults both with a capacity of around 600 people. It’s enclosed, its dark, it’s intimate and when its rocking there’s no better club around.

The great thing about the club is the diversity of the line-ups. There’s something for everyone on a regular basis. The only way I can explain the Irish crowd is nuts. I’d advise anyone to come over and experience it for themselves.

Who would you say have been musically your biggest influences?

Mauro Picotto. I used to follow him religiously during 2000–2003. I was amazed by his dj sets and by his music. He somehow managed to combine pleasure and pain, beautiful pad sequences and synth arrangements with relentless kicks and violent percussions. The best thing about Picotto was that you never knew what was coming next. There is one gig I remember in Dublin when he finished his set, nobody would leave the club for thirty minutes because they were screaming, stamping and cheering for him. It’s still regarded as the best gig ever in Dublin by many people and something which I will never forget.

My other influences would be Sander Van Doorn, Max Walder, John O’Callaghan, Sean Tyas, Nu-Nrg, Chris Liebing, John Askew and many more.

Finally, were really looking forward to you finising off the night in style at ElectronicSessions. What can we expect from your set?

The unexpected!

Thanks for taking the time out with us Bryan, see you on the 14th!

Thank you Ross, can’t wait for it.

In my opinion, THE best producer making trance music today. Mr Harris sums up Restricted Motion perfectly, Bryan's remixes of Lost Emotion and Lift just superb and Exactly's pretty damn good as well. Can't wait to see him play at ES. Smile
