Earth Needs a Rebirth! Discussions with Psy-Trance Artist Numayma

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 18-10-22 06:23

Numayma is a Psychedelic-Trance producer, born and raised in France. Numayma heralds a huge talent for creating beautiful Psychedelic-Trance melodies and has been snapped up by monster label Iono-Music. With his outstanding debut album due for release this November 2022, we decided to go deeper with this fast-rising star!

Hi Numayma, thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions for HarderFaster.

Did your childhood influence your desire, your passion, and your talent for music?

As a child, I liked to play with objects that made noise, or rather that made different sounds. Banging on everyday objects, playing with the volume buttons on the TV, listening to what my mother played on the radio, and songs from my Indian origins - I would always hum along to try and replicate what I heard. I was lucky enough that my mother spotted my love of music very early on; she enrolled me in a music school to take piano lessons which I took from the age of 5 until I was 16. I found music to be a means of expressing myself; an ability to communicate in a more universal way.

What is your first memory of music?

My first musical memory was my very first piano lesson - the discovery of this incredible instrument that made me vibrate with each different note. From a simple game of tapping keys on the keyboard, I began to find a way of expressing myself beyond just using words.

Who inspired you growing up?

One of the Indian artists who made an impression on me since childhood is Allah Rakha Rahman who wrote the soundtrack for the film BOMBAY; to me he is the greatest Indian composer. There are also several French artists I really admire, such as Jean-Jacques Goldman, Michel Berger, Daniel Balavoine and Jean-Michel Jarre.

When and how did you get into Psychedelic trance?

In 2013, during an outing with friends, I felt my whole spirit move through the electronic sounds of trance music. I found this sound very expressive, and immediately began imagining other new tracks – there were endless possibilities and variations, including integrations of identity, cultural and tribal sounds. This crazy mixture has now become my artistic world.

When did you start producing? Did you study music production or are you self-taught?

I started producing in 2013, and I am self-taught, with the help of a friend who is my manager today, and who is still present and advising me constantly. I found the first steps I took into production very complicated; I had to learn to master the M.A.O. (DAW) software and that's what took me the most time. Fortunately, I had the support of my good friend who has much greater computer knowledge. The creative musical part I had in me, and so I was able to express myself more fully through the discoveries of the software. The mastery of this software along with the help of my master keyboard connected to the computer, a Piano Yamaha P95, is what got me going.

What did signing to Iono-Music mean to you?

In my opinion, Iono-music is one of the best Psy-Trance labels in the world and I have been listening to many artists from this label for a very long time. It's a label that has always made me in awe, for the choice of its artists and its music. So, it really is a dream come true to have been integrated into this label and welcomed with open arms to a team that I now feel is like a new family. Moreover, I would love to develop this label in France and to make it better known in my country. I hope to share this experience of music as a universal expression with as many people as possible, to be continued…?!

Your debut album ‘Earth Needs a Rebirth’ is out on Iono-Music in November 2022. Tell us about the album: Where did your inspiration come from? Expand on your message; how long did it take to make; what equipment did you use….?

I designed the melodic parts of this album using my piano. Then I transcribed them onto my pc using several virtual synths. I worked on each sound intricately and I gradually refined the sound design to match as closely as possible to the atmosphere and theme I wanted to evoke and convey. I also added ethereal, whispering, benevolent, otherworldly voices that I hope will encourage us all to take a new path for our good.

I have been working on this album for almost 2 years now. I wanted to express myself in the deepest way possible and articulate the great sadness I feel to see this Earth, which is dear to us, being destroyed every day. This land, which bore us all - humans, animals, plants, insects, and all life forms. I feel our planet is heading towards a real catastrophe.

I do not claim to have the solution to this problem, but, through music that has no barriers of ethnicity, language, religious or political ideas, through this universal means of expression, its sounds, its vibrations, I want to convey my fears, my anxieties, but also my hopes for the future through the awakening of the collective conscience. All my sensitivity, my anger, my desires, and my love of life on this planet have guided every note of every piece of music on this album. I believe nature always takes back its rights by correcting an imbalance. It hates the vacuum that is created daily by the loss of fauna and flora.

It is up to us to choose the way in which Life on this planet can continue before it’s too late and this blessing is taken away from us.

Do you think artistry can be taught?

Art can be taught at any age, but it can only be taught in its form and not in its substance. The art that is taught to a person is a form of languages, techniques, learning of matter or manipulation of objects. Creativity cannot be learned - it is felt, experienced and expressed, even without being fully aware of it. Creativity is a window to the soul which opens through the thread of our emotions and our experience and our hopes. It is love, hate, sadness, melancholy, regrets, envy, fear, friendship, all these emotions that make us unique human beings. We are all the sum of our past; our creativity is telling this story.

Do ever struggle with ‘writers’ block’?

Like any artist, sometimes I don't have inspiration, but that’s because it's not the right time. So I let things happen, I walk, I recharge my batteries, I listen to music, I often do things that I don't have time to do when I work or make music. Having a life next to music with all its good times and its difficulties helps to continue to build your life, from your past and towards your future, which are in fact the future fruits of creativity. Usually after a break of a few days I find my inspiration returns.

What other passions do you have?

My other passion in life is to travel. It is an incredible richness to discover other landscapes, cultures, traditions, other ethnic groups. I travel to the homes of local people, in order to feel their way of living. I blend into their culture by understanding and exchanging ideas and people who are part of everyday life. I also come to give and to exchange; meetings and shared moments which are sometimes fleeting but always enriching.

What are your hopes, your dreams and your plans for the future?

Through my music I would like to transmit strong messages, to touch people's hearts, to federate them and to bring together as many people as possible for the same purpose - to live in serenity. There may be parallel worlds, heroic fantasy and perfect dreams; this is my vision. I will fight to make dreams come true; if only for one hour or for one night, I want to bring joy and hope to this world!

Thanks for your time Numayma!
