Well now that Facebook fucks everyone over with algorithms and you can't post anything edgy (unless it's fake news for cunts), being able to shitpost on here instead does seem like a good idea... Idea

But we're all politcally correct as fuck now.

Hi all.

I think social media has made people lazy.

Nowadays people show appreciation, (or a lack of) by liking, or....not liking. There is virtually little more thought behind it than pressing a button. People have become lazy in expressing their opinions. We have been dumbed down.

Hope you are all doing well in lockdown Smile

Yeah but would we get away with it even on here nowadays. I think Matt would be forever putting out fires to keep us online. Maybe the future for a site like this is to become an onion and go underground, then we could be saying or doing whatever we want, that would trump the facebook delusion.

I have to admit it was a shame we didn't get to do brexit on here in our heyday, that would have been a sight to behold. Laughs out loud Laughs out loud

God Brexit was bad enough of FB. Here it would have been an absolute minefield.

I agree and I object!

I don't recall the mods ever censoring people, not even when it came to bat-shit crazy. You just had to read her stuff; we had to "communicate" with her, lol.

We did do Brexit on HF, in the run up to the vote in 2006 and afterwards, and from what I remember, it was interesting and educational.

But that dried up, as FB consumed us.

In the meantime, I miss your input on Trump, Brexit, Johnson and Covid-19!

I hear from family and friends, but I already know their opinions. HF always gave me a far rounder picture.

No I was referring more to how you were talking about the google analytics type stuff, not the moderators censoring us.

We did get into a lot of heated discussions about the open market, the expansion in 2004 to include a lot of poorer countries and the influx of workers fueled that. i guess when you look back that was a large tipping point in this whole saga.

edit: I also think that the forum experience like we had here is completely different to facebook. I mean I don't know how other people use facebook but to me it is nothing like a forum. On facebook I have people on my friends list who are my family or people I know reasonably well for the most part like work colleagues and things like that. And it is not very often people like that will start conversations on subjects that rile people up I mean it is polite society after all. Laughs out loud

And the only times I might get into debates about things might be in the comments sections under newspaper articles and then I am dealing with people I don't know at all, they are just complete strangers. On a forum it is like you have a community of people who know each other but are not super close, so we don't really have to be polite to each other, like we do with families, close friends and work colleagues , we get to challenge each other and see a broader spectrum of life experiences and opinions and ideologies. Although I don't remember to many people changing their opinions very often. Laughs out loud It actually kind of reminds me of what it is like in a university tutorial class when discussions happen there, when you kind of get that melting pot of people with different interpretations and views of things. I mean I am sure HF wasn't unique i bet there was forum communities developed around a whole host of different interests but it is a completely different experience to facebook imho.
