Roger Sanchez announced this week that he’s remixing a track featuring the vocals of former Strangler singer Hugh Cornwall to support the environmental awareness project ‘Danger Global Warning’.
The US house star is also putting out a number of limited edition vinyl 12”s on his label Stealth Recordings (including mixes by the likes of Goldfrapp, Afrika Bambaataa and Lee "Scratch" Perry), though denied being a secret Stranglers, when he was growing up in New York in the late 70s.
‘I never had enough hair to spike unfortunately, so with that limitation in mind I went the b-boy break-dancing way,” Roger told Skrufff, “We didn't quite mingle, us and the Strangler fans back then,” he added.
The global warning project is also being supported by legions of alternative and mainstream stars from music, art and film including Bruce La Bruce, Mike Figgis and X Files actress Gillian Anderson though Roger stressed his reasons for getting involved were the cause.
“I think just like most people I have recently become far more aware of the implications of our behaviour on the world,” he said,
“I know I don't do enough personally though and I guess it will come down to rules being put in place that will force us all to take better care of the environment,” he suggested.
Roger also emphasised he’s ‘trying to do his best’ in his personal habits though conceded he’s yet to trade in any of his five luxury cars for a Mr Bean style electric vehicle or bicycle.
“I considered it for less then a millisecond but then considered that I don't want to take my tour manager, my records, my wife and two kids on the back of my bike - so that was thrown out,” he laughed.
Sex Pistols graphic artist and British druid Jamie Reid’s name also appears on the list of GW supporters, some six years after he admitted he was already considering heading for the hills in the face of impending catastrophe.
“There are massive climate changes occurring, solar activities have increased and all sorts of things are happening,” he told Skrufff, “You always assume that these major disasters happen in different ages but the last time when there were catastrophic changes, it happened very quickly.”
The counter-cultural icon also criticized authorities (‘I'm almost on a David Icke tip, I think there's always been a very dark, corporate elite who actually run things’) and called for a worldwide ‘spiritual revolution’.
“We've absolutely fucked the planet up. I get more spiritual satisfaction from growing flowers and vegetables,” he said.
“Our past history has been so boxed off by the authorities and their interpretation of it. Things can happen very fast and this is a very crucial time,” he warned.
