Golden Girl Cally Gage Gets Up Close And Personal

On Saturday February 24th 2007 at the Brixton Academy, Cally Gage stepped out in front of four thousand clubbers to accept the Best Newcomer Award at the Hard Dance Awards. Not bad for a girl who got her lucky break on the flip of a coin from tidy’s Russell Pate. Since winning the tidy DJ Competition two years ago, she’s risen through the ranks on nothing but her pure talent – which, let’s face it, is quite simply mammoth. Now she’s back to play for the brand that put her on the map.
Friday April 27th will see Cally step up to the main stage, as tidy once more team up with Extreme Euphoria, alongside K90 LIVE, the Tidy Boys, Olly Perris and a certain Miss Lisa Pin-Up (who will be launching her God Save The Queen UK tour on the night with an exclusive two hour mix) down at the legendary Heaven for another of their massive London parties.
We caught up with Cally to find out how things have been since winning her award, what she’s got planned for tidy vs Extreme Euphoria and the rest of the year, and whether she’s gutted she never got her hands on one of those original golden glowsticks.
You’re playing at tidy vs Extreme Euphoria at Heaven on April 27th – are you looking forward to it?
God yeah, of course I am! The last time I played at Heaven was for Polysexual South and it was incredible! Heaven is such an amazing venue to play at as well, the view from the stage in the main room is, well you’ll just have to get up there and see for yourself.
Have you got anything special in your box for your set?
I always get asked this question, but never like to give anything away – you’ll all just have to come along to see what I pull out of my box for you all to dance along to.
It’s the launch of the Lisa Pin-Up’s Club The World tour. Musically, and as a female DJ, how much influence has she had on you over the years?
Well when I was a clubber, I used to like the harder sound of hard house; so the DJ’s that I used to go and see play would be the likes of Paul Glazby, Andy Farley, Tara Reynolds etc. Since I started DJing though, I’ve looked at Lisa Pin-Up more and more. I really admire her as she always seems to be working so hard with her DJing and behind the scenes. I find that really inspiring as another female DJ and I look up to her because of it. She always finds time to talk to her fans and clubbers and I think that really means a lot to people. Lisa is definitely a female DJ that people should take notice of and if I get to where she is today, then I will be extremely happy.
Lisa is designing a signature outfit with Contagious Clubwear. Have you ever been approached to design a range of clothes or DJ product?
No I haven’t actually, but I am open to offers! I emailed UDG once though, asking if they would make a pink record bag, but they emailed back to say that there wasn’t the market for it. I totally disagree as I would love to have one, but what can you do? Maybe if I got a big enough petition together, then they would take notice, what do you reckon?
How does it feel to be the official Hard Dance Awards ‘Best Newcomer’ DJ winner?
I know, it’s crazy isn’t it? You should have seen me on the night of the Awards, I was in bits, I’m not used to talking in front of so many people! Get me on the decks and I’m fine, but talking is a totally different story!
It actually feels brilliant to be honest and I’m totally chuffed with it all, especially as the votes come from the clubbers themselves – it makes it mean so much more to me, you know? Since then things have been going a little crazy and people have been taking a lot more notice of me, which is just great. It has helped me get my name out there so much more and it has also hopefully helped people take me a little more seriously as a hard house female DJ. Let’s see what the rest of this year brings, I’m so excited!
What was it like stepping out onto that massive stage? Could you see anyone with all the lights on you?
I couldn’t see anyone at all to be honest. Luckily I was the first one out, if I’d have had to wait any longer, I’m not sure what sort of nervous wreck I would have been by the time I got out onto the stage. I don’t really remember much of my speech and then I was whisked off to have an interview with MTV, how good is that? I couldn’t stay around long though to be honest, as I had another gig to go to up in Long Eaton!
Where have you put your award?
It is looking just lovely up on my windowsill along with Andy’s awards. I polish them on a regular basis you know!
Are you gutted that you didn’t get one of the golden glowsticks?
To be honest – no, sorry! Andy got one last year though, so we do have one in the household anyway!
What do you think it is about your style and mixing that made everyone vote for you?
I really don’t know babe, maybe we should ask everyone who voted!
Thinking about it, I reckon it could be a mixture of things like the kind of tracks that I play, the amount of fun I have behind the decks and the fact that you always catch me hanging around in clubs after my sets chatting to everyone. Clubbers always want to see someone having fun with what they play, how can you expect everyone to dance around to your tunes, when it doesn’t even make you lift your own head up?! When I used to be a clubber, I would always try and chat to my favourite DJs, so whenever anyone comes and talks to me, I’ll always give them as much time as possible. There’s nothing worse than someone being rude, there is just no need!
Potentially next year you could be going up against Andy for Best DJ. Would you get competitive over it?
Oh god, yes I could. How funny would that be! I suppose that would be the next award up from best newcomer. But I could also be up for ‘Best Album’ or ‘Best Remixer’ this time next year, you never know!
Andy and I never get competitive of each other, we are both really proud of what the other has achieved and he is my biggest fan, honestly! Even though our careers are now totally separate, we support each other as best we can. We are a team!
Your set at the tidy Weekender last month was one of the most talked about of the whole event. What were your highlight tunes?
Was it? I really didn’t think that about it at all, as I was on at the same time as the Tidy Boys, damn them, haha!
I just wanted to get the whole thing right you know? I always put so much pressure on myself and with this being the first Weekender gig since winning the competition, I had talked myself up in to a right frenzy! The whole set was wicked though and I got some great feedback from everyone that saw me. Fingers crossed I will be there again in October. I also had a longer set time, which I loved as well but trying to think of any track in particular though is a little hard as they all seemed to do the trick.
What do you think it was about your set that got such rave reviews?
Where are these reviews anyway? I want to have a read! I know that I got mentioned on the Dave Pearce show that Sunday night though, how good is that!
I think that as it was my return set, a lot of people wanted to see how I would do, especially as the competition was such a long time ago.
Did you get up to anything else while you were there or did you have to jet off to another gig?
Fortunately, I didn’t have any other gigs that weekend, so I managed to hang around on the Friday night after my set and didn’t have to make the long journey home, back down the M6, until the Saturday afternoon. I decided to stay at home on the Saturday night and get my energy back, but came back up on the Sunday afternoon to meet up with Andy and all of our friends for the last night of the weekender. I’m sure most of you saw me at Pat Sharpe’s (not so fun) Fun House on the Sunday afternoon, but that’s a different story altogether!
You’re part of the Frantic family. How important has Will and the rest of them been to your career?
Will has been working with me and took me under his wing from the very beginning, something that I’ll always be very grateful to him for. He has always been a huge source of inspiration and advice to me and of course deals with my career as much as possible. Will has so many other projects and things going on, so my day to day Manager and Agent is the lovely Chloe Leeks, she is just fab, and I know that we both have the same ideas with where I want my career to go. Working with her is just perfect to be honest.
I’d also like to think though, that I have built up my career through the hard work that I’ve put in and just because of the person that I am really. I hope that Will, Chloe and I will carry on working together throughout my career, as I do value them completely and think that they are definitely the best people to have behind me in this scene.
What productions are you working on at the moment?
Well I have made 2 tracks with the talented Mr Brookman. We are just waiting for some of the vocals to be changed on the second track so it can be released but Steve Hill said that he wants to release them on ‘Masif’ as an EP, how exciting is that! I haven’t really looked into other production work that much yet, but it is something that I’m definitely going to get more heavily involved in this year, its just a case of choosing the right producers to work with (as long as they’d like to work with me).
What has the rest of 2007 got in store for you?
Well so far it is looking to be pretty exciting, even though it is only April. Obviously, my diary isn’t completely full yet but the gigs I have already are looking really good. I’m playing at places all over the country and have already been confirmed for 3 festivals this year, which I'm chuffed to bits about. As I mentioned before, I’m also going to start working on my production career a lot more as well. That’s all I’m going to say for now though, I don’t want to give too much away, you’ll just have to wait and see what happens!
Obviously you’re now firmly established in the UK market. What are your plans as far as international bookings go? What are you doing in Ibiza and are you looking to break through into any other territories?
Unfortunately I haven’t had many gigs on the international circuit and it is definitely something that I’d like to do more of. I played over in Holland last year and the experience was amazing – they treat you almost like royalty, it was quality!!! I got picked up from the swanky hotel that they’d booked for me and driven down to the club where we went through a secret back entrance! We also had dressing rooms upstairs which had everything in them you could think of. A fridge full of every drink possible and a huge buffet type thing on this massive table, (I felt so spethial!). I was so excited to have a gig abroad, taking my record bag through an airport is an experience I’d love to get used to! I haven’t got anything booked for Ibiza yet this year, I might go over there for a few days as a holiday though. I’ll have to see if I get any time off though to be honest.
This year my management and I are working on taking everything up to the next level, so fingers crossed this will include a few international gigs as well.
Where do you want to be in the next five years?
Still doing what I’m doing now, but just on a bigger scale all around the world, haha! Well we all have goals and if I’m still playing to packed clubs each weekend and have a few productions under my belt then I’ll be happy.
Now for those all important random questions:
The Sultan of Brunei happens to hear a mix you’ve done, loves it and approaches you with the idea of building a club. Obviously being he, money is no object. What kind of club would you build with no limitations, what would be its special features and who would you have on the line-up?
Wow, that is just the perfect opportunity isn’t it? Well the club would have to be somewhere exotic, like in the middle of a rain forest and because the surroundings would be so beautiful then a lot of the club would be outdoors, so you could make the most of it all while you’re all dancing around like loons. The whole night would start just before the sun sets and finish just after it came up again. To see that would be just amazing. Within the club there would be all sorts of things to do; like a play room with bouncy castles, bungee runs and space hoppers. There would also be a relaxation room so you could go for a massage or chill out if you wanted to. Any drink you could think of would be behind the bar, especially some mad crazy cocktails and it would be cheap to get into as well, so as many people could come along as possible. (God, I’m really getting carried away with this aren’t I?) Music wise, I would have my favourite hard house DJ’s on the line up of course:

What in your opinion is the perfect existing venue around at the moment?
Am I only allowed to choose one? If so, then it would have to be Air in Birmingham, that is just the perfect place to play in and if you haven’t been there yet, then the drive will definitely be worth it. When you stand behind the decks in the main room, you can see everywhere around the club and everyone can see you as well. It is an amazing club to play at and somewhere I always look forward to going back to. Can I just choose one more as well please? My second choice would be The KoKo Club but there aren’t many hard house events there at all anymore, boo!
Where have you played that’s had the most electric atmosphere?
Well that would have to be when I played for Slammin Vinyl on New Years Eve 2006 at the NEC in Birmingham, it was just amazing and a gig that I will never forget. What a way to bring in the New Year! I was lucky enough to play up until midnight, so the atmosphere was just incredible. I had the biggest grin on my face from start to finish and couldn’t stop jumping around like an idiot the whole time I was playing. Hopefully I’ll get to do that again this New Year’s Eve, fingers crossed anyway.
If there was a club in space and you could fly in there instead of just dancing, would you go?
I always say that I’d never go into space, unless they built a road from Earth all the way through to one of the planets, it scares me too much to be honest. So I probably wouldn’t want to go and would be quite happy to keep my feet firmly on the ground, just watching everyone on the TV or through youtube or something!
What do you want to call your kids?
Well, Andy and I have already decided what we’re going to name our first child, but I don’t want to give that away, someone might steal it! I really like my name and have always said that if I ever have any children, they are all to have quite unusual names. It makes them stand out a little more.
You can work with any musician, alive or dead. Who would it be and why?
In the hard house world, I think it would have to be the late Tony De Vit. He made some amazing tracks that I still play today. To work with him would be like a dream come true. Just to meet him and have a conversation would be amazing really. I’d pick his brains about everything, because he is such a legend.
What Madonna tune would you remix and what would you do with it?
God, I used to love Madonna when I was younger! My favourite tune of hers was ‘Like A Prayer’, so that would be the one that I would choose to remix, maybe I should book a studio date with someone and see what we come up with?
Would you ever consider shaving your head a la Britney or Andy?
Oh my God, never – have you seen how much my ears stick out?!
Who would you work with, Christina or Britney and why?
I’d like to work with them both actually, if I were in the pop industry of course! I like what they both have done and think they are both equally as talented. I’m not sure if they would be interested in doing some vocals on a hard house track for me though!
Do you have any pets?
No, not yet anyway! I’m still working on getting my puppy from Andy. He already has a name and everything! If anyone sees Andy at all, keep asking him how Henry is, it might make him feel guilty enough to go out and buy him for me!
What’s the one tune in your music collection that you would never sell even if your life depended on it and why?
There isn’t one track in particular that I would never sell as I have quite a lot of old tracks on vinyl, original copies as well. I’ll make sure to leave the collection for my children, as it will hopefully be worth quite a bit by then!
What’s the one tune in your music collection that you don’t want anyone to know about and what possessed you to buy it?
Well if I told you that, then you would all know. It’s top secret I’m afraid, as it’s actually quite embarrassing!
What was the first tune that you ever bought?
Well when I first started buying tunes, they were always on vinyl. I remember the whole experience of buying vinyl and how exciting it always was, waiting for the postman to arrive with it all! The first hard house track I bought on vinyl was ‘Legend B – Lost In Love’. I still have it here somewhere and believe that it is actually worth quite a bit now. It is still an amazing track and always gets the crowd going when I play it.
If we went to war and everyone got drafted, would you go and fight or would you refuse?
I am actually quite a wimp and really don’t like pain, so if I got called to go and fight, I wouldn’t actually be much use to anyone anyway. I’d probably go as it is better than sitting in a jail cell but I’m sure they’d send me home pretty much straight away, considering how useless I would be. Have you seen how skinny my arms are?!
What would be your motto for life at the moment?
The same as it has always been:
‘You will always get what you want out of life as long as you’re prepared to work hard to get there and put the effort in that is needed along the way’
