The Annual Frantic NYE end-of-year round-up!

For the first time since Blast vs Frantic on New Year's Eve 2004 at The Fridge, Frantic are throwing a big old end of year shindig instead of their usual New Year's Day blowout. What's the crack with it? Well, it's taking place in a warehouse in Shoreditch, it features 2 rooms of 'ard dance with the likes of Whitby, Gage, Adam Lab4, Proteus, Mark EG, Kutski, Andy Rise & Matt Pickup, award-winning soundsystems, brand-new decor, tons of lighting and a shed-load of clubbers who look good enough to eat.
And as we do every year, we got the main room DJs together to knock heads and decide on their highlights of the year! Except the elusive Finnish freeform fanatic Proteus, who escaped from us amidst a flash of blinding light. Anyone see him?
What has been your hard dance tune of the year please?
Adam Lab4: Well I also just realised that my other favourite tracks were also late 2006! So I'm going to be cheeky and say my new tune Psychopath.
Andy Whitby: The track I played in most of my sets and still gets a huge reaction is my own remix of Bliss Inc. Faith, which came out on Lab Recordings.
Mark H: My favourite track of the year is the awesome floor filler by Technikal Back To The Old Skool. This smashes it every time!
Cally Gage: I’m not sure that there has been one specific track that has been my tune of the year, there are so many to choose from – I have literally been spoilt for choice! Ones that I seem to play nearly every set are Andy Whitby’s remix of Faith, Execute by Greg Brookman & Kevin Energy and Matt Lee’s tracks Go and How Many – every time I drop one of these tracks I get goosebumps just watching how crazy the dancefloor seems to go!

How about your gig of the year? Which one smashed it more than any other?
Kutski: Transmission at Sydney Olympic Sports Center, Australia I’d say.
Cally Gage: My gig of the year has to be headlining the amazing Frantic 10:15 with Andy, now that was a gig that I will never forget. It was at the legendary KOKO and we were playing a 2 hour back to back classics set – it doesn’t get any better than that! The view from that stage was incredible and everyone seemed to be going absolutely insane, I couldn’t talk for days afterwards from screaming so much!

Andy Whitby: Frantic 10 was special, an amazing gig that I’ll remember forever. I love Koko, and to step up on the main stage with Cally in front of a sold out crowd was incredible.

Adam Lab4: It would have to be Lab4 NYE 2006/07 (we played after midnight) with Laserpoint or Gatecrasher in Finland where I played drums for Proteus Live. The best gig I went to would have to be Marilyn Manson at Manchester Central (G-Mex) last week.
Elvis: My closing set at Slammin Vinyl’s WESTFEST in October was just unreal! Got to be the biggest crowd I’ve ever played to.
Mark H: My stand out gig of the year was a Polysexual tour at Evolution in Cardiff, the crowd was so up for it and every tune got a massive reaction! The Welsh really know how to Party!
James Condon: Gig of the year? Project Storm at The Coven in Oxford. An underground Hard Dance event in a 500 capacity club with a 20K Funktion One soundsystem. Best atmosphere ever!
Is hard dance on the up again after a difficult 2006?
Cally Gage: Definitely and it makes me so excited to see what 2008 will bring. Everything has just seemed to move forward so much more this year – bigger tracks are coming out, more and more younger, newer clubbers are getting into the scene and everyone seems to be having such a good time at every party I’ve been too, there are also quite a few new promotions coming through that are putting on some cracking line-ups. Everything needs to evolve and change to be able to move forward and there has been some big changes in hard dance this year, it’s definitely for the better though – bring on 2008!
Elvis: 2007 has defiantly been a lot better for the scene. The tunes released this year have been great and there is plenty of new talent rising up the ranks! I have a feeling 2008 will be a good year for hard dance!
Kutski: I think my side of the spectrum is to a certain extent yes.
Mark EG: The smoking ban hasn't helped on the floor but nicotine aside, people will always want to dance, always want to party. The key is to keep the music moving forward and search for new sounds and styles so that people always hear something fresh. Bring on 2008!
Mark H: The hard dance scene’s future is definitely looking brighter. I think it will be difficult for some time yet but with the new rising stars bringing something new and fresh there will be some exciting times ahead!
Andy Whitby: I’d say a definite yes. It went through a patch of finding its direction and now with so many exciting and new producers and styles of hard dance breaking through I think 2008 is going to be an amazing year musically.
James Condon: Hard dance has finally got exciting again! 2008 is going to be a very interesting year for it with a lot of genre crossovers. I think we will see a lot of techno and electro influences (which I’m loving at the moment).

Adam Lab4: I hope so, I'm not overly qualified having been out of the scene to a degree this year. I don't think it would harm for things to get a little more 'underground' again though. I think that there have been a lot of changes over the last year with regards to record sales becoming almost totally digital, another of the largest distributors recently went under and lots of labels and artists have lost a lot of money so there's no telling what aftershocks there may be after that. Having said that though it's been an exciting year to 18 months what with DJs, Artists and Producers now being able to easily get their music to the public using the internet (MySpace etc.) so maybe when all these changes have settled the whole scene may be given a fresh and exciting boost. Having said all that I have been asked similar questions so many times over the years though and think that in many ways things have just settled after a massive boom in the late ‘90s and early 2000. Back in 1994 through to maybe 1997/8 clubs were only ever on once a month for the most part and there were less of them so it would seem that the hard dance scene is still a healthy scene, just not a scene in the middle of a boom anymore.
What was the funniest thing you saw in a club all year?
Kutski: A bloke dressed as a Pepsi Can!

Cally Gage: I don’t think I’ve seen anything that funny to be honest, how boring is that? I’m sure quite a few things have happened but I’ve just missed them – I’ll make sure to keep my beady eye out a lot more over the next year, so I’ve definitely got a story to tell you next time!
Adam Lab4: Well having only spent a small amount of time in clubs this year so I can't really think of anything club related. At the risk of sounding boring and going back to the Manson gig though, me and about 20 other people were entertained for a good 10 minutes watching a very strange little man who was wearing a white beanie hat and a Crombie coat, kneeling on the floor trying to roll a spliff in amongst thousands of people trying to move towards the front of the venue. People kept tripping over him and trampling on him and he just stayed there trying to roll the spliff! It was hilarious watching peoples confused faces not knowing why they had tripped over and at the same time this strange little man who had to keep scraping his 'components' off the floor to start again! I have no idea what happened to him as the crowd surged forward as the curtain dropped and Manson came on.

Elvis: Any club Gordon Darley has been at - that guy is the funniest man in hard dance.
James Condon: You see some very funny things in clubs but I think the funniest has to be my mate Ant (aka Forest) dressed up in a flowery dress and blue rinse wig with a Mrs Condon name badge on him! He seemed far too comfortable! What is that all about? Hehehe.
Mark H: I have seen so many funny things but the funniest thing was seeing my mates Pearce and Leon doing a DJ set in full on Batman and Robin outfits, hilarious!

Mark EG: The funniest thing for me was playing at a party in Russia when me and friend found about a thousand balloons backstage after I'd been fed a bottle of Russian Vodka. We spent 30 druken minutes running backwards and forward on stage throwing them into the crowd. At one point there was so many in the air, we had to stop the music cause they kept bouncing into the decks. I wet myself bad that night.
Andy Whitby: One of the professional dancers at a gig ‘popped out’ of her bikini mid dance and didn’t realise for at least ten minutes why the crowd were cheering so loudly as she bounced up and down thinking they were loving her funky fresh dance steps.
What do you want for Xmas this year?
Andy Whitby: An iPhone and iMac please big man!

Adam Lab4: Ableton Live 6 to 7 upgrade! I can't wait although I am not going to attempt to install it until after my set on NYE just in case it brings any naughtiness with it!

Kutski: A £10,000 gift voucher for purchases at Digital Village (a studio equipment retailer!) Or an Audi S3 Quattro and a few grand cash for insurance, haha!
James Condon: I’m hoping for a Sat Nav. So fingers crossed!
Mark EG: Well apart from a shit load of mince pies, I'll gladly settle for a week of hardcore partying. In fact, I'm going to be totally run off my feet this year, so I'm really buzzed up about the Xmas week. I think I'll need a holiday afterwards just to recover!
Mark H: I have been a good boy this year so hopefully Santa will bring me lots of presents and loads of booze.
Cally Gage: Do you know what, I haven’t even thought about it really! But if anyone’s reading this that would like to buy me something, then I would like a new black leather jacket, some UGG boots, some jewellery and there’s a couple of books that I’d like as well, oh and maybe a holiday. That’s quite a lot actually isn’t it?!

We can now finally reveal the location for Frantic’s NYE party!
The venue is called the HEARN STREET WAREHOUSE and has been used to host parties for the likes of Sasha, Bugged Out! and French Connection.
It's literally 5 minutes from Liverpool Street tube and mainline train station. Trains run to Liverpool Street from North London and all over East Anglia. It’s less than 10 minutes walk from Old Street tube on the Northern Line.

It might not look like much from the pictures…but believe us when we say by the time we’re finished kitting the place out it’s going to feel like another world! Check out this video from a Bugged Out! party their from earlier this year to see what it’s like when it’s going off in there:

We have asked outlets to send out paper tickets rather than door collection lists, so the ticket collection should be kept to a minimum. We will recruit extra staff to take care of the ticket collection. The guestlist is also kept to a minimum and many guests are being sent paper tickets. Again extra staff will be on hand to cover this. Basically this means it will speed up the process at entry. We will keep searches thorough but fast, and we will be ink stamping people upon entry rather than using wrist bands. This all means less time queuing on the door!
A huge outdoor area for smokers complete with hanging halogen heaters (like those used at Fabric) and seats will be available, as well as indoor heaters to keep the indoor space at a comfortable temperature. We’ve bought them ourselves this time so won’t be let down by a hire company like at One AWsum Night! There will be proper toilets, drinks token booths away from bar and cloakroom to ease congestion, a large cloakroom, flooring, signposting…basically everything you need for a trouble-free night out!
As for production, we’ve got brand new Frantic décor, a powerful laser and light show, a room decked out in UV lighting, stunning visuals, live feeds from the DJ booth and thumping soundsystems. We always use the best sound engineers and state of the art DJ equipment in these warehouses so that the DJ and the clubbers get the very best from the experience. We are going to be using the brand new TurboSound Rig that is intended to beat all comers in giving arena-quality sound.
