Astral traveller Laughing Buddha joins the circus to preview his new album

Reported by Tara / Submitted 21-05-13 17:32

Laughing Buddha (aka Jeremy van Kampen) is a moniker that truly fits with the energy that exudes from the speakers when Jez takes to the stage. A true legend that has risen from the embers of the Goa trance scene, he is now a firm favourite at home as well frequenting the international festival circuit from Boom back to Goa.

Always performing with beautiful energy and a cosmic sparkle, we welcome Jez into our little universe. Come and listen to his enlightened chortle!

You first got into Goa trance in the ’90s, but were playing the guitar long before that. Can you remember how you first got into making music? And what inspired you to make the switch to psy trance?

I grew up with music… my parents were both classical musicians, so I guess you could say it’s in the blood! I had already played ‘cello and rock guitar, so when I started going to Goa parties it was only natural for me to want to start producing psychedelic dance music.

Who or what have been your key musical influences over the years? And now?

Many bands have influenced me musically, but my biggest inspiration is the scene… the amazing people and beautiful dance floors around the world.

After producing some of the defining tunes that pioneered the sound that we call ‘psychedelic trance’, how would you say your music has changed and evolved over the years?

A lot has changed about the music, largely influenced by developments in technology. The sound has become much more refined with higher production values, but it’s very important to me to keep a connection to what was special about psychedelic trance in the first place. It’s all about the vibe.

These days you’re just as often to be found playing at festivals around the world than at parties in the UK. Where would you say the psy scene is kicking off the most at the moment?

There are always great parties kicking off in most places, but one of the most exciting places right now is India. There’s a huge scene emerging over there and they really go crazy for the music.

What’s been the most memorable party or festival that you’ve played at over the years?

There have been too many to mention them all. Obviously festivals like Boom and Ozora are amazing phenomena, the Glade has always been something very special, but there are many smaller parties like Pulse in San Francisco or Amorphia in Athens, which have the same magical energy.

You’re renowned for your incredible energy and constant smile behind the decks: are there ever times you’d rather be tucked up back at the hotel room with a duvet and if so, how do you deal with this?

Very often!! I have a very hectic schedule and sometimes it gets exhausting, but as soon as I get to the party and start playing I soon forget about that…

Since you’ve started DJing and producing, the way we play, make, distribute and promote music has completely changed. What impact has this had on what you do and how you do it?

Evolving with the technology is part of the fun and helps to keep the music side of things interesting. It’s amazing what is available to producers these days… the kind of tools I could only dream about when I started.

What’s your favourite plug in or piece of kit right now?

It’s amazing what you can do on the iPad now that Audiobus has given it a real boost. There are many great sounding apps on iOs such as Animoog and iMini.

If you were ever stranded on a desert island, which five albums would you take with you?

Oh, tough one!! Can’t really say… would probably just take my iPod instead – it has about 2000 hours of music on it! Should keep me going ‘till I get rescued…

You’re also half of live act Fearsome Engine with Tristan, how did this collaboration come about and do you have any new tracks in the pipelines?

Tristan and I have been in each other’s orbit for many years, since the early days. We first collaborated in 2005 with a track called ‘Levels Of Truth’ on the album Elegraffiti on Solstice Records. After the success of this track we decided to write an album together, Biting Point on Nano Records, which gained a cult following around the world.

Tristan is now one of my closest friends and we are looking forward to getting stuck into exciting new projects in the near future. We also have a new Fearsome track in the pipeline which we started just a few days ago.

To most people touring the world DJing and producing music is a dream job. Having been doing it for many years, what do you reckon are the best and worst things about it?

It’s a hard job to beat! I feel very honoured to get to travel the world as an ambassador for cosmic consciousness… there’s really nothing to complain about!

Your track ‘Astral Traveller’ takes us on epic journey… do you believe in life on other planets?

How can you not believe… the universe is such a vast and mysterious phenomenon that we would be rather conceited to think we were the only form of intelligent life in it all.

I know what goes on tour is supposed to stay on tour you must have some great stories from travelling the world. What’s the weirdest one you can share with HarderFaster readers?

I arrived at a festival in Australia last year under police escort as the driver was unaware she had been pursued by police for over 10 minutes for speeding. They were sending in backup and were just about to throw spikes across the road when she finally noticed them! As we were only just down the road from the festival they allowed her to take me there but escorted us in!

What do you like to get up to when you’re not making music?

I moved out of London a few years ago and now live in Somerset, so when I get back from a hectic tour or finish an intense studio session it’s great to get out into the beautiful countryside with my family.

You’re one of a handful of local artists booked to play at Pearl Festival at the end of August. With Pearl promising to put UK psy trance festivals back on the map, you must be excited to be involved in this new project. What are you looking forward to the most about Pearl?

It’s very exciting. This country has a wonderful history of festival culture and I’m very proud to be a part of that. I’m sure that Pearl will be flying the flag in true style!

Your next London gig is at Astral Circus on Friday 31 May, where you’re playing live and DJing. Can you give us any clues what to expect from your album preview set? When is the new album due to land?

I’m currently putting the finishing touches on my album… expect a release very soon! I decided to do something exciting and different to my last album, so I have put together a collection of collaborations with some of my favourite artists including Tristan, Dick Trevor, Electric Universe, Lucas, Space Tribe and Avalon.

What other gigs and productions do you have on the agenda for the rest of 2013?

I’m looking forward to some great parties over the summer including Pearl, Fusion Festival in Germany, Summer Never Ends in Switzerland, Lost Theory in Croatia and so on. As well as getting my album out there I’m contributing to an album being compiled by Tristan for Nano Records, which will be showcasing the best of the UK trance sound, doing another collaboration with Lucas for T.I.P. Records, working with Outsiders in Israel and many other projects…

Finally, if a fan sees you at the bar at Astral Circus, what should they get you to drink?

I’m rather partial to Bollinger… but a beer will do!

Thanks for your time Jez! Looking forward to catching up at Astral Circus!
