Ingition preview with Groove Factory’s CD

This coming Friday 10th November sees the return of Ignition @ The Fridge for a night of musical cross genre dance music pleasure. Kicking things off in the main room is a dj who has also crossed genres as a clubber and now as a dj. It is with great pleasure we introduce electro’s answer to Paul Oakenfold… CD!
CD started his dance music journey as a regular at well established hard dance events Frantic and Heat. Grinning from ear to ear and on occasion being mobbed as a double for Paul Oakenfold, he learnt his trade from watching legends such as Phil Reynolds, James Lawson and Nick Sentience grace the amazing Camden Palace.
CD now finds himself immersed into the funky/electro scene as a fast rising talent. Holding down a residency at the highly regarded Groove Factory, he’s has swapped his hard beats for the sexy grooves that funky and electro offer. Much inspired these days by producer/djs such as Tom Neville and King Roc, the Kiwi pin up prepares himself to throw it down CD style on the awesome Fridge sound system!
CD you have been around on the club scene for quite some time as a clubber, which leads to the question, at which point did you decide to become a dj?
I never really said to myself ‘right that’s it, I’m going to become a dj’. Like many djs out there I was fascinated by the djs I was listening to and wanted to have a crack at it for myself. I was lucky enough to be given decks as a present from two very good friends, which I guess was the turning point that really got me into it.
You were a regular at Frantic events and at that time were very much into the hard dance scene. Which djs did you get your inspiration from at that time?
My favourite was always Phil Reynolds. My first weekend clubbing in London I actually saw him play three times! Some say stalker, I say luck — you can make up your own mind...
After that I was hooked. I guess the other big influences from the hard dance scene at that time were Nick Sentience and the Edison Factor boys who, as you know are all amazing producers and phenomenal djs in their own right.
You’re now a well established house dj. When did the transition from hard dance to house happen? Why and when did you decide to see what was on the other side of the fence?
During our clubbing days we spent a lot of time warming up for our nights out at Inigo, where we would catch the Ignition Crew: Matt Williams, Martin Dawson aka King Roc and Tom Neville. I always really enjoyed those nights and when my legs started to run outta gas from all the stomping I decided that house was the way forward.
I also really liked the fact that there seemed to be a lot more opportunities to play house and I also really liked the scope that there was in terms of genre. No one really minds too much if you mix it up a little. I also liked that fact that it was slightly more listener-friendly in that there is a wider appreciation for house — especially at the moment.
Do you prefer house to hard? What bought about the change of tastes?
I do prefer house more now, but to be honest two of the three best nights out I’ve had this year have been Eddie Haliwell & PVD @ Turnmills and the Cream Opening Party @ Amnesia featuring Marco V, so that probably tells you that I’m still prone to something a little harder than what’s on offer in the house scene.
You are a resident for Groove Factory. Please tell the readers how it all started, who is involved and some of your highlights?
Groove Factory was started by Richard Launch, Phil Reynolds Paul Henry and myself three years ago. Since then Richo and Rod Towns have joined the party and Paulie and Phil have taken backseats, leaving the four of us to run the events. We have a residency at the Whitehouse in Clapham and our events are run on the first Saturday of every second month. We have a party music policy and we do our best to progress the night, keeping things nice and cruisey at the start and then toughening things up and letting it rip at the end.
Highlights include all three of our Groove Factory Xmas Parties, which to date have all been monstrous affairs. The next one is on Dec 2nd and I’m sure it’ll be more of the same. Other highlights would have to be the two trips to Ibiza with Heat UK. Our Third Birthday party last month was a cracker too and as well as that we’ve enjoyed having some great guests over the past year or so, including Lee Dagger aka Bimbo Jones, Matt Williams with one of his awesome Abelton Live Sets and up and coming producer Jon Gurd.
Friday 10th November sees you play a chunky electro warm up set for Ignition @ The Fridge. What does it feel like to be playing the main room at a venue you used to go and party in on many occasions?
To be honest I’m a little nervous but extremely excited and really looking forward to it. I can’t wait to into that booth as it was one of my goals to play there when I first started dj’ing. I must admit I secretly hoped it would be playing hard dance at the time, but I’m more happy to be there playing electro for Ignition.
What kind of tracks can we expect to hear in your set? Are there any gems that you just can’t stop playing at the moment?
I don’t usually plan my sets out too much, but due to this night being a little bit special in the way it’s structured I want to be a bit more selective in what I’ll be playing, so will be searching the archives for tracks that I think will suit the set time and venue. Chunky and groovy will be the way forward I would think.
So where did the name CD come from? Do you play CDs? Do you like CDs?
Loads of people ask me that question but unfortunately I don’t have a very exciting answer. My 5th form English teacher Skinny Wilson made it up when I was about 15 and it stuck — it’s not that I worked for Civil Defence, drank Canterbury Draft, lived in Central Districts or love Compact Discs, it’s just my initials. Which house djs/producers are kicking arse at the moment? Any names we should keep an eye out for?
I’m terms of up and comers I really rate Jon Gurd, his productions are top notch and his dj’ing is perfection personified. King Roc is consistently knocking out quality tunes and remixes and I’m loving Paulo Mojo’s stuff at the moment ,especially his mix of ‘Aftermath’ which I’ll definitely be giving a run on Friday.
You’ve been trying your hand at doing some producing yourself recently. Have you had any luck with signings?
I’ve been having a little dabble, mainly collaborations. A while back I did a track called ‘Backscratch’ with Alex Parsons which has been signed to Brique Rouge from France. The track is coming out with a Zoo Brazil mix sometime soon which is very exciting. I’ve also been doing a few tracks as one half of Life Of Luxury with Greg Brookman. We’ve had some interest in the tracks but we’re biding our time and haven’t signed anything up as yet. If you want to check them out check out www.myspace.com/cdgroovefactory
Ignition is described as a night of well programmed dance music. What are your thoughts on having different genres like breaks, electro, funky techno, hard trance, hard dance and hard house in the same room on the same night?
I think it’s a good move to be a bit more innovative with the line-ups and programming of the night. It’s nice to go to a night that morphs and changes over the 6–8 hours you’re at the club and there are loads of clubbers and djs who enjoy more than just one genre of music. I for one am looking forward to the night and will be sticking around to check out the rest of the line-up. I also have a few mates who are up for it too, which is always a good sign.
