Bedlam @ The Fridge - Reviewed

Reported by Adam Symbiosis / Submitted 12-05-04 17:11

It’s Friday night, it’s the weekend after a bank holiday and yet again it’s cold, wet and dreary in London but bright eyed and ready for some action, me and a friend make our way as quick as we can to Brixton for Bedlam at the Fridge. Already by half past ten there’s a small crowd inside warming up to the beats being played by Chris C in the main room, a blend of tough, uplifting, energetic tunes.

Since I was last at the Fridge some of the problems with the sound seemed to have been sorted out and we were able to wander round and look at the stalls, then sit down, chill out for a bit and still hear the music. Well done you guys Thumbs up

Things were starting to really hot up in the club with more and more people turning up and slowly getting into the mood and onto the dance floor. As someone said to me, it was a real cosmopolitan mix of people from all over the world which only made the night even fresher as I had so many new people to meet. With the stage set and podiums out, all it needed was the appearance of Colin Winstone’s dancers to get the crowd bouncing. To cap off the show, a drummer kept the rhythm going. The troupe that Colin had gathered together were really impressive and I’m really looking forward to seeing them again!

Pyrotechnics went off around one to add to the already impressive light and laser show now installed but, grrr, I missed most of it trying to find my friend and his camera.

It’s sad but true, Milk have decided to call it a day and as, it seemed, it was to be their last party, the DJs pulled out all the stops to make sure things were really went off in the enlarged room 2. Every time I tried to get in there it always seemed packed. I braved the crowd and indeed the heat they were creating to listen to Chris Humphreys and Lunar Chic go back to back. Thank God for the fan by the DJ box as the room might have exploded as people got down to their deep and dirty set.

As the night progressed, the music flowed like the atmosphere and the club rocked to some gritty, hard beats. At times it seemed that the DJs wanted to take you by the scruff of the neck just to get you shaking and moving your body just that little bit more. With all the bouncing and the heat I found myself having to take loads of breaks but that meant I was able to talk to more people in one night than I have done in ages. Everybody was friendly and up for a chat and it was refreshing to find a complete lack of attitude with just smiling faces everywhere. A big shout out as well to the Fridge staff and security who impressed me with their friendly and professional attitude all night!

By four the crowd had thinned out a bit, leaving those party animals still remaining more space to dance in. Too bad though for those people who had left as they missed a great set by Justin Bourne from 04:30 onwards. He got me jumping up and down like a loon, just when I thought I couldn’t dance anymore, all the way to the end.

In all a hard edged night of fresh music and smiley, happy people going crazy to some of the best DJs London has to offer. Well it isn’t called Bedlam for nothing and it certainly lived up to its name! Roll on June 4th.

With thanks to Zimma for the use of her photos
