May Trance Chart - (artist/title/mix/label)
(1.) Fire & Ice: ‘Lost Emotion’ (Bryan Kearney remix) – Banshee Worxx
Official Tune Of The Year so far! This is absolutely incredible: starting where ‘Restricted Motion’ left off, this has energy like you wouldn’t believe, superb production and a melody & payoff to die for. I can see this still being my favourite track of ’06 in December.
(2.) Greg Downey: ‘Kia’ (original mix) – Discover
This has really grown on me. When I first heard it, I was underwhelmed but having had the chance to play it out, I now think it ranks alongside Greg’s best work. Great stuff from a fantastic DJ and producer.
(3.) Velvet Girl: ‘Satisfy’ (Airwave remix) – Bonzai Trance Progressive
Probably the best progressive trance track I’ve heard in ages. This has everything I look for in an early-night prog trancer: a nice driving – almost funky – feel, a great building, hypnotic quality and a vocal that really works. Brilliant.
(4.) Duderstadt: ‘Muhanjala’ (Sean Tyas remix) – Afterglow
First of a double-header from Sean Tyas who has to be this year’s impact producer in trance. Here, he turns in a pumping, slamming, stabby rework of the latest Duderstadt, transforming it into a floor-shaking anthem.
(5.) Sean Tyas: ‘Mirella’ (Sean Tyas rework) – Afterglow
Sean Tyas again, this time with a classy rework of the title track from his earlier ‘Mirella’ EP. This just radiates quality and typifies Tyas’ tough, driving – but very accessible - sound. I wish there was more stuff around like this.
(6.) Simon Patterson: ‘F16’ (original mix) - 2 Play
It’s a mark of how good the trance scene is at the moment that, during any other month, this probably would’ve charted at #1. Jaw-dropping production standards combine with a genuinely distinctive breakdown, especially with *that* sound effect.
(7.) The Digital Blonde: ‘Only You’ (original mix) – J00F
Many trance fans are labelling the Digital Blonde’s new album as one of the best artist albums ever to come from the genre. ‘Only You’ supports this claim with a dark, driving, psy-influenced feel and clever use of those classic ‘Fiji’ vocals.
(8.) Rowland & Wright: ‘Hybrid’ (original mix) – Six:Thirty
Another track that could’ve easily been #1 during any other month. A welcome shift to a more trance-based style for Rowland & Wright, with the quality, pace and energy that I’ve come to expect from Six:Thirty, who are my label of the year so far.
(9.) Acute: ‘Rewired’ (2006 rework) – CDR
Acute aka Martin Jarvis is beginning to make some serious waves as a producer which is brilliant to see as I’ve been lucky enough to be able to support his music for a little while. ‘Rewired’ sounds like classic PVD trance, all wrapped up in very clever and contemporary 2006 production standards.
(10.) Above & Beyond: ‘Alone Tonight’ (Above & Beyond club mix) – Anjunabeats
Another track which has really grown on me. It’s been out for a while now but I’ve come to appreciate this beautiful vocal trancer for what it is – one of those rare tracks that sounds incredibly sad and soulful that still manages to put smiles on faces when you play it in a club.

From: Bagel on 27th Apr 2006 00:37.40 Interesting choice in Fire & Ice mate...I take it you have heard the original from 2001? Its in my top 3 ever...pure genuis. Either way, good choice
From: Jurrane on 27th Apr 2006 12:31.57 Hey Daegal - yes, the original's a beautiful piece of trance but the Kearney mix just takes it to another level for me. It really has everything I look for in a trance track & I'd be keen to hear what you make of it.
From: Andy Dunford on 28th Apr 2006 13:21.32 Fantastic chart as always mate, and Fire & Ice is near the top of my list of tunes at the mo, awesome track!
Nice to see A&B creeping in at the end there (always good with me ) and everybody seems to be helping themselves to a bit of Sean Tyas right now (in the musical sense of course )
Be interested to hear F-16 again. I'm sure I've heard 2 mixes of it, one was awesome, the other was a bit gash!
From: Oliver Leighs on 29th Apr 2006 02:56.26 Some great tunage in there Jim, glad to see a bit of girly trance in there as well at number 10...... and what an album Tri-State is As for Lost Emotions, nice remix, and nice use of the Agnelli and Nelson everytime lead LOL!!!
