Vinylgroover - The Interview

Reported by Robert Muir / Submitted 07-08-02 22:53

Vinylgroover has been on the dance/rave scene from 1994 and since then has DJ'd all over the UK and the rest of the world and established himself as one of the UK's leading DJ's and producers, with tracks published on the Nukleuz, Red Records and Powerhouse labels. Robbie Muir grabbed managed to grab a quick few words with him after his set at Enzo's:

Robbie Muir: Where did it all start, the first time and place where you decided that you wanted to be a clubber ?

Vinylgroover: It all started back in 1990/91 when I was still 14! My friends Mum and Dad were into the rave scene & had some decks and I loved playing on them. In '92 when I had just turned 16 they took me to Vision at Popham airfield and it was unlike anything that I had ever experienced before so I made up my mind there and then that I was going to be involved.

RB: Where did you play your first gig ?

VG: I did various gigs from the age of 14, at local clubs & Discos but in May 1993. I got my first ever gig (getting paid £20) at Zanies on the Isle of White, I remember Colin Dale was also playing that night and I was actually sick with nerves for half an hour before I could finally go into the club.

RB: How has the scene changed since those days ?

VG: It's changed in many ways, from the clubs to the music to the people. But it's all been very positive change club wise and musically! The only thing I don't really like is big cheesy Ritzy club DJ's playing our music, they should stick with their Grease soundtrack!!!

RB: How did you get your break ?

VG: I got a job working in Movement Records in Portsmouth, (which was later Fusion) I got to meet all the promoters and people that were involved with the scene. I met Murry from Dreamscape, he put me on a flyer in early 1994, after that it all went a bit crazy.

RB: As one of the Nukleuz DJs what has been the highlight of your DJing career ?

VG: I've played big events and clubs, but some of the top ones would be Wembley Conference centre, London docklands, Tribal Gathering, Ministry of sound, The Buzz Club in Washington DC, the list is endless really. I also did the biggest ever dance event in America 2 years ago with the likes of Paul Oakenfold and Darren Emerson, they had over 40,000 people there, it was really special because I played last and watched the sun come up over the Nevada desert.

RB: I consider Rok da House as one of my all time classics (I've had plenty of sweaty dancefloor moments with that tune); what do you consider as your all time classic ?

VG: I think Edge records 1 because you could play it ten years ago, now, and it still rocks any dancefloor in the world, it really is a fantastic track and I think it will still be played for years to come.

RB: What tunes are you currently playing that make the dancefloor erupt ?

VG: At the moment I'm playing a lot of BXR <£ Nukleuz stuff as well as a lot of my own and bits from Marco V, there is actually a lot of excellent tunes and producers around at the moment.

RB: Do you prefer being in the studio or playing live ?

VG: I enjoy both the same to be honest, but there is nothing like playing your own track and watching the dance floor go mad!!

RB: One last one, what lineup would you love to witness as a clubber ?

VG: As a clubber the line up I would love to see (past & present) would be Carl Cox, Mauro Picotto, Mickey Finn, Fergie, Slipmatt, Brandon Block & Alex P (back 2 back), DJ Hype, Tiesto and of course Me! Ha!

With thanks to Vinylgroover for his time.
