Trance Sanctuary - London's hottest new event

Reported by Agnes Klos / Submitted 29-06-11 19:38

Trance Sanctuary was born out of a pure love of trance. The passion invested in ensuring that each event has high production standards and is visible the moment you step through the door of Raduno, the intimate venue in Farringdon where the event takes place. After the smashing success of the launch party in last March, Trance Sanctuary joined forces with one of the UK's most successful Trance Labels, Enhanced Recordings and returned for their second event on 14th May, with an even bigger line-up and more surprises in store. Agnes Klos was invited to see what this newly-born London party has on offer for music-hungry trance lovers.

Once upon a time there were four trance lovers who decided that the scene in London was lacking quality trance events after numerous clubs such as Turnmills, the End and the Cross closed down. With the nostalgic memories of stunning parties they had previously experienced they knew it was high time to take the initiative and create a night of their own. This group of four, included Malu who is responsible for promotion, Mark Landragin - a DJ with an expanding career and Pri and Alex who bring onboard their professional experience in the field, serve today as an example of what can be achieved when the love for music is followed with open heart.

The primary aim of Trance Sanctuary is to energize the London trance scene, reunite friends and introduce the new comers to the beautiful world of trance. The event starts at 4pm and goes on until 1am, which means that it can serve as a perfect pre-party for whose who want to rave the whole Saturday night or as the main event for trance fans who have families and other commitments but still want to enjoy themselves without the burden of staying up till dawn. This unique solution seems to appeal to London crowd which showed their never-ending love and support during the second happening of Trance Sanctuary.

With a shiver of excitement I walked up the narrow staircase of Raduno where I was greeted by a beaming smile of the girl waiting for trance-lovers at the entrance to the party. With my entrance all sorted I followed the beat of music, drawn to it like a bee to a flower. On my way I spotted an interesting feature, which made me stop and think for a few minutes. To intensify the feelings of joy and thrill, every step of the way to the party was decorated with meaningful messages and quotes from the best known trance tunes on the market. My soul filled with a warm cosy feeling while reading: “I still feel you beneath my skin, I am tempted to throw my senses in”. A few steps more: “The day is calling you, roll out and start a new, wipe your weary eyes and tumble out of the sky”. Such a small touch but so powerful. I already felt transported to a different world, melting in a state of trance. More steps, at that point I thought I got lost but I saw “Nearly there” on the wall. I knew I was close. My heart skipped a beat when I saw: “Welcome to Trance Sanctuary” on the big black door. I dared to open it only to be hit by the uplifting wave of mesmerizing trance. I was finally in.

In the era of the music scene leaning towards minimal, techno and dubstep, Trance Sanctuary serves an oasis for clubbers who want to pleasure their ears with euphoric and uplifting sounds. It is delightful to come across a party which does not limit itself only to resident DJs but instead gives the best springboard for successs to up-and-coming talent. DJs who desire to shine behind the decks at an event filled with friendly and up-for-it people are welcomed with open arms by the promoters. One might say that Trance Sanctuary is one of these unique gems hidden in the middle of a concrete jungle that we call London.

Ten hours of uplifting, progressive and melodic trance started off slowly with just a small group of people inside. However, it did not cause any problem as the venue is conveniently located next to Fabric and the atmosphere is always vibrant in that area. There is a small terrace outside where one can enjoy a smoke or peaceful conversation with a friend. To kick things off, a warming up set was served by Steve Holland. This South coast DJ might have been recognised by some clubbers for warming up for Above & Beyond's 'Group Therapy' album launch party at Ministry of Sound. At Trance Sanctuary he displayed his skills behind the decks and delivered a stream of deep melodic tunes, which was got the trancers gradually ready for the aural feast to come.

Continuing on the positive wave was Rascal Van Russ who has gained a loyal following from his Sunday night Trance Beats radio show hosted by Trance.fm. In the past Rascal has played alongside DJs such as Aly and Fila, Richard Durand and Nitrous Oxide. Proof of Rascal’s talent and dedication to music was his chance to play at Brixton Academy with Armin van Buuren in earlier this year. On the evening of Trance Sanctuary Rascal showed off a whole array of well-selected tracks that uplifted spirits of all gathered in the room.

As the crowd started to build, colourful lasers shot into the darkness of the room, creating an ocean of light. It was simply a perfect environment for clubbers to immerse themselves in, forget their worries and get lost in music for that one Saturday evening. The space was decorated with rainbow balls hanging from the ceiling and a distinctive huge pipe above the dancefloor definitely added an edginess to the interior of the venue.

Next up was the resident Mark Landragin, who took control of the decks. This 25 year old DJ has been causing a stir on London scene for quite some time now. He has quickly become one of London's most in demand DJs, gaining bookings at events such as Electronic Sessions, Echo, Forward, Dance Virgin and even Paul Van Dyk's UK Tour. Mark did not disappoint his devoted fans who came to Trance Sanctuary. A shriek of joy reverberated throughout the room on Mark’s sight appearing in the DJ box.

I had a chance to grab Mark after his set and ask him whether he was pleased with the progress of his second event. Mark told me: “The event has been really well attended which creates an excellent buzz around the place. Our crowd is very knowledgeable which is fantastic for a DJ because it allows you to have the confidence to play whatever you want to. A personal highlight for me was when I played my track 'Boom or Bust' which has just been released on NOYS Music. Quite a few of my friends recognised it when it was mixed in so that was nice.”

After the excellent set by Mark the tranceheads began to pack out the hectic dancefloor so tightly that there was hardly any room to move or breathe. It was obvious at that moment that it was time for the main act of the event: the international DJ, Temple One (aka Joe Garrett). He took things up a notch choosing Chakra ‘Love Shines Through’ (Alex M.O.R.P.H. Remix) as his opening tune. Known for his own tracks such as Forever Searching, Halo and Zebra that have been played all over the world by the likes of Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and Above & Beyond, Temple One is considered to be one of the young bright minds of the UK trance scene. He bashed out a powerful brand of his melodic progressive tunes and the crowd lapped it up. Temple One delivered a truly electrifying set.

“I thought it was an amazing night . . . the people, the passion and atmosphere was perfectly blended. I think the Trance Sanctuary team has a great thing going on and it proves the love for Trance is there in London,” said Temple One.

“I wouldd have to say being behind the decks was the highlight of the evening for me and seeing the crowd’s reaction to my new tracks. The tune of my set that stood out was probably Sean Tyas’s remix of ‘Sanctuary’ by Gareth Emery. It always goes down well. Having said that, I enjoyed the whole night!” he added.

Following Temple One was Simon Bostock whose hectic career includes being an established producer and DJ with his releases supported by Armin Van Buuren's "A State of Trance" radio show. He played a very driving dirty tech set which was bursting with power and energy. I got talking to Simon after his wicked set and he shared some opinions with me:

“As usual thanks to the London traffic, I got to the venue a bit later than expected. However, when I arrived I found Mark Landragin was playing to a packed and buzzing room. The atmosphere and buzz was electric from the off and Mark's set was something special, with more people coming in after I arrived and it was really nice to catch up with some familiar faces. I even chatting to the bouncers of Raduno for a while and they were enjoying the night (makes a change to most bouncers in London clubs). When Temple One came on he cranked it up a bit more playing some really uplifting euphoric tracks making everyone go into frenzy. So to say the event not only met my expectations but also it exceeded them by a long shot. When I got my chance on the decks, I could feel the emotion on the dancefloor and it was really nice for people to complement the set I played".

“Getting the opportunity to play for Trance Sanctuary was for me something I'm not going to forget for a long time. I really enjoyed every second and the only downer was that the hour and half went by so quick. It was also DJ Erc's birthday that week and I got Marco a birthday present, but forgot to give it to him before my set. So whilst playing Daniel Kandi's Remix of Jared Knapp & Patrick De Vere's Night Moves I gave him his present which was a printed Tshirt of his new night Futurity, I wasn't really paying much attention though after because I was mixing the next track but I've seen the video and it's so funny seeing his face and surprise when he opened his present. Priceless".

“My edit of The Doopler Effect - Beauty hides in the Deep (John O'Callaghan Remix) was the peak track for me - everyone was singing and loving the emotion of the track when that came on, certainly gave me goose bumps,” said Simon.

The finishing set of the evening belonged to Bryn Whiting which was a storming success. This south coast based DJ, known as a regular guest at the superclub Slinky has recently starting making waves in the production scene with his track ‘Father’ being signed to Slinky Digital and having further releases on the Digital Assault label. Bryn proved his talent and technical skills by keeping the crowded club grooving till the last minute of the party and not letting anyone leave the dancefloor.

At the end of the night I managed to have a few minutes of the busy schedule of the co-promoter of Trance Sanctuary Malu, who told me: “I think this Trance Sanctuary has met all of our expectations, actually more than what we'd imagine. We prepared ourselves a lot and we looked after the biggest to the smallest details to deliver a great party, but what made it all so special was the trance lovers because they know how to party and they come prepared with an open heart for the music, because they love Trance music and this is what turned Trance Sanctuary in a such special and unique place to be. Our DJs have done a fantastic job from the beginning until the end with the help of our powerful speakers as well that gave that extra boost hehe!"

“The tune that created the peak of the party in my opinion was certainly "Boom or Bust" from Mark Landragin, the new just released track on Mike Koglin's label" Noys Music", the people went mad because it's an amazingly catchy new track and has just been voted the record of the week at Anjunabeats worldwide. All the people that supports Mark wanted to hear that on the dancefloor and when he played it there was an amazing euphoric response, that was indeed the start that created the big peak of the party. I also absolutely loved Bryn Whiting's set which was the last set, the boy did it all for me and for many others, it was actually when I could just stop working a bit and enjoy myself. I went mad when he dropped the classics Adagio for Strings and Gouryella, I couldn't believe my ears, that was the highlight for me! That was soooo good and the dancefloor was still packed till the last minute and when it finished all the people asked for "One more tune", that was another highlight that gave me amazing satisfaction, that paid off all the work! I invite all the trance lovers to come back on 9th of July and party with us again.”

Even though London offers countless opportunities to hear the biggest names in the music scene in clubs around the town, Trance Sanctuary fills the gap of having more intimate events where the whole dancefloor can feel connected to the DJ and united in their love of the blissful trance sounds. The party had a thoroughly planned out and smooth progression in sound from the melodic vibe of early sets to the more euphoric and driving sounds towards the end, a feature which few parties can boast about. Without a shadow of doubt, Trance Sanctuary is as one of the hottest new events in London - an ultimate must for everyone who feels trance running in their veins.
