Ibiza superclub Privilege have cancelled their mid August ‘Love Parade’ party ‘out of consideration for the victims’ of last weekend’s disaster in Germany.
“Privilege Ibiza´s management team have decided, in an act of responsibility and respect to the victims at Duisburg and their families and friends, to cancel the event that has been scheduled on forthcoming August 14th at Ibiza´s disco,” they said in a statement. “Sorry people.”
British music critic Joe Muggs, meanwhile, was noticeably less considerate writing a shockingly insensitive article in the Guardian in which he implied that the ‘bovine’ (cow-like) behaviour of many German ravers meant the disaster was an accident waiting to happen. (http://tinyurl.com/34m3qea )
“I love techno,” the British writer declared, “but attending Love Parade once, in Berlin in 1995, was enough for me.”
Ridiculing ‘day-Glo-clad idiots . . .stood with bovine blankness’ who blocked the path of an ambulance he was equally scathing about everybody else, dismissing them as a ‘sea of a million gurning ravemonkeys in deely boppers surging through the streets in an undifferentiated mass, soundtracked by the thud of lowest common denominator German "Schranz" techno’.
“It was vile, as far removed from the freedom and fun of acid house as one could imagine,” Muggs continued. “Unless you have witnessed Germans raving, it's difficult to comprehend how techno is so indelibly etched into the national psyche.”
Back in Germany, leading newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung branded the disaster a ‘scandal’ rather than tragedy and accused organisers of ‘megalomania’ and ignoring warnings from partygoers as the fatal crowd bottleneck developed.
“If the organisers expected hundreds of thousands of exuberant youngsters to queue patiently and not to push or climb fences, they were ignorant and unprepared,” the paper wrote.
“This is no ‘tragedy’ as they would have us believe. No one is innocently at fault here … Fate looks different than this. No one went blindly into this accident. The catastrophe is a scandal because everyone was warned: the city, the police, the organisers, expert advisers,” they added (The local.de: http://tinyurl.com/367taz9
