I understand they overbook, it makes fares cheaper, but there must be a better way of persuading people to volunteer rather than this kind of PR disaster...

I saw some videos of that on the Guardian and Gizmodo last night. The poor man is clearly massively traumatised and in shock (not to mention the cultural aspect of the public humiliation)
He knew there is a big payoff coming if he glams it up a bit.
He's clearly not american, and also he was in shock head wounds and bleeding from the mouth. . The cultural aspect of embarrassment and public humiliation cannot be underestimated

The CEO has said now that this is part of their policy of boarding denial. Perhaps next time don't wait until everyone has boarded to decide they need to get off the plane you fucking wanker. BA overbook their flights and have a first come, first served basis. Unless you "buy" your designated seat. The lady at check in told me this and said I should always make sure to check in early.
