HeatUK Great Artists Preview: Interview with Justin Bourne

Reported by Calanth / Submitted 19-04-04 11:22

Some of you may recall Justin Bourne blasting away in the foyer at last year’s HeatNYE at the Brixton Academy, or ‘The Final Curtain’ at Camden Palace. More recently he held his own at the HeatUK / Logic event at Heaven alongside Karim and Andy Farley. Alternatively you may be more familiar with Justin as the label manager of Short Circuit Recordings. If you haven’t managed to catch up with him yet in person, he’ll be playing alongside Paul Glazby and Ian M on Saturday April 24 when Short Circuit Recordings host the hard house room at the HeatUK event: ‘Great Artists’ at The Scala. In his words: “I’m looking forward to playing a relentless hour-and-a-half of dark ‘n’ dirty beats... if you like it hard and full on then that's the place to be. It's gonna rock!”

Described to me as a ‘helluva nice guy’ Justin was also patient enough to answer some questions about what he does, what he loves and what he’s all about. Justin has been a DJ for almost eight years, a producer for five years and has been running Short Circuit Recordings for around 18 months. Getting fed up with producing for lots of different labels, Justin decided to start his own “... as an outlet for my material and to sign tracks from other artists. I'm happier working this way.”

He’s worked with “... loads of different people..” including James Lawson, Matt Williams, Jon Langford (Knuckleheadz), Project Mayhem and Darren Zebedee. “All these guys are awesome and I've worked with them all on more than one occasion.” Mik Cree (of Dynamic Intervention) is Justin’s main studio partner though. “I produce 90% of my work with Mik. He's an amazing producer and engineer. Mik has co-written or engineered many of today’s anthems [though] a lot of people wouldn't even know it was anything to do with him, he's a true talent.”

So far Short Circuit Recordings have worked with the likes of Paul Glazby, Ilogik, Defective Audio, Tara Reynolds, Casper, James Lawson, Mark Kavanagh, Jay Pidgeon, Matt Williams, Alex Calver, Project Mayhem, Testube Babies, Daely, Base Graffiti, Strange Dave, Nick Rowland & Dave Wright, Spencer Freeland, Al Greene, Mark Gray and Colin Barratt, to produce tracks and remixes and you can look forward to forthcoming remixes from OD404 & Nick Sentience. Bastien Wallace recently caught up with Justin Bourne and this is what he had to say...

BW: So I guess you never wanted a 9 to 5 job?

JB: I did have an ordinary job for seven years as a block paver but it all got too much trying to do a hard labour job six days a week and then be out either clubbing or DJing every weekend. I remember that I used to go out DJing and then go straight from the club to work. I quit my day job over four and a half years ago now, it's probably the best decision that I've ever made.

Justin in the foyer at Brixton Academy

BW: What’s involved in managing a record label?

JB: There's quite a bit really. The easiest part is signing or producing the tracks, then there's promotion, dealing with pressing plants, distributors, printing companies and trying to stick to deadlines. It can sometimes be a little difficult when things aren't flowing nicely but it's all worth it.

BW: What up and coming future releases can DJs look forward to from the Short Circuit label?

JB: The most recent release to hit the shops is my new track called 'Get Back', it features on the front cover cd of this months Mixmag, It's a full on banging affair as expected and seems to be receieving a lot of support by all the big guns like Glazby, Farley and Lisa Lashes. The next release after that is Testube Babies - Jungle Style which is a full on Techno style track, with an OD404 Remix that'll knock ya socks off. Following this I have remixes of Mark Gray's 'So Powerful' & Colin Barratt's Magnifique. I've asked upon the services of Tara Reynolds and Casper and both have done an amazing job.

BW: Vinyl sales are down across the board but some labels continue to prosper. In the current economic climate, what do you think makes one label survive while another fails?

JB: Consistency. The labels that still shift good units probably have a large fan base and use big artists and sign strong tracks time after time.

BW: What is it that makes Justin Bourne ‘deliriously happy’?

JB: Performing to a room full of people with smiles on their faces... I'm best known for the Banging Hard House stuff.....that's my passion. But at home you’re more likely to find chunky/funky house and techno playing on my stereo.

Justin at Heat: Forces of Nature

BW: Do you ever get nervous when performing?

JB: I used to get nervous, but not really anymore. I find smaller clubs a lot more nerve-wracking than the larger events. I can happily stand on the main stage at Brixton Academy and not be phased at all but then play in a 200 capacity club where people are right in front of you and then the nerves might kick in....Funny hey!” (Not one for lucky outfits when he performs, though a “nice pink bunny outfit” was suggested - Justin prefers Budweiser to help with the nerves if there are any).

BW: Tell me about the perks involved in your work.

JB: All the free vinyl is a great perk. It bugs my family though as the doorbell always rings on a Saturday morning when we've normally just gone to bed from the night before.

BW: For the first time your record label is hosting the hard house room at a HeatUK event. Why have you chosen Paul Glazby and Ian M to represent Short Circuit Recordings at this event, and how have these two DJs influenced your career thus far?

JB: There are only a handful of DJ's that I'd really like to represent Short Circuit and these two are a top of that list. I've known both Ian & Paul for quite a number of years now, as friends and work buddies. There aren't many DJ's out there who can destroy a dancefloor like Glazby and Ian M. The Short Circuit room is going rock! Ha Ha

BW: Another DJ in the Short Circuit room and receiving a lot of play at the moment is George-E, also known for his banging style and another new face to watch. What advice would you give any up and coming DJ wanting to walk in your shoes and pursue a career spinning and producing vinyl?

JB: Yeah George is wicked, he's been making waves recently and I reckon he'll be hitting the big time soon. I'm happy that he's involved in this event and I have no doubt that his set will be electric. My advice for up and coming DJ's would be to keep your head down, work hard and try to bring something new to the table. It's difficult because there isn't a particular working formula for success but I reckon a combination of desire and patience will help towards a career in this industry.

BW: The event at The Scala has been titled ‘Great Artists’ and focuses on four of today’s great Hard Dance producers. You are included in the four alongside Paul Glazby, Nick Sentience and K90. This must be a great honor for you. How do you stay inspired?

JB: It is a great honor to be included with these guys and I'm over the moon that Damian and the HeatUK crew have noticed the work that I put into the scene and see me as a Great Artist. I've been producing for over five years now and I'm glad that people are still into what I'm doing. I have a true passion for music, even through rough times in my career when things aren't looking too healthy, I still manage to be inspired and I try not to get involved in all the negativity. If I work hard enough then I'll achieve my goals.

BW: Can you recall a bizarre moment in your DJ career so far?

JB: One time this guy stood in font of the DJ booth bashing his head with a potato masher for the duration of my set. I'd been out all weekend so I was a little worse for wear and this really freaked me out. I thought he was going to hurt himself.
BW: And the future for Justin Bourne?

JB: Hopefully it will continue to take me all over the world. Places that I'd never imagine going on holiday let alone to DJ. I find it really exciting to be able to travel the world with a box of records/cd's and earn a living from something that I love. My main aim over the next year is to concentrate on the overseas work.

Why not get a posse together and check out his set at HeatUK ‘Great Artists Volume II’ at The Scala April 24.
