Some people are born entertainers and they don’t come much more entertaining than Simon Vegas. He is a natural behind the decks, with enough energy and enthusiasm to not only get the party started but be the last one standing as well. His high jinx off the decks are the stuff of legend. I could tell you about the time I met Simon, when he was MC’ing to hardcore into a makeshift microphone (using some headphones) at an after party or the time he played at a CyberKitten Filthy Sunday Stomper earlier this year making his entrance on a giant orange spacehopper, but none of these stories really do the man justice, let alone pay homage to his talents behind the decks.
A skilled dj who knows how to rip it up both with NRG and more recently breaks and electro house, Simon has a real style that totally energised me when I was learning to mix. With his dual CyberKitten/DirtyFlirty residency imminent and a B2B with the gorgeous HyperVixen at CK’s Accelerate @ Fever, Northampton this Friday (6th October) I felt it was about time Simon made his HarderFaster debut
Simon, ahoy there!! Welcome to your first HarderFaster interview. How long have you been mixing it up in your inimitable Vegas style and is there a story behind your name?
Hey there hun. Straight in there with the questions, I like ya style! Well I’ve been mixing now for coming up five years, and it’s been an amazing journey I have to say. I started playing out after just a few short months and haven’t looked back since. My first set was at Frisky in Northampton on a ‘Frisky Family’ (members) night, and I was on the flyer as Vegas Boy as a result of my nickname. I was then booked at another Northants night, Hoover, off the back of that set and they did the same. By this stage everyone was calling me Vegas and I’d already been getting quite a lot of attention, so it just seemed natural to stick with it and Simon Vegas was born. Although back then my style was a little different to how I play now, I used to spin a progressive mix of what now is called hardstyle and European hard trance, hard house and underground NRG. Over the first year my sound and taste developed and across that time I ended up settling on doing what I do now — energetic, driven hard house and NRG.
Where did you first go clubbing and how did you get into the hard stuff?
I first started clubbing at the legendary Ultra Vegas in Milton Keynes back in 2000 and in many ways my name pays homage to that. It was there I first experienced the club scene that’s now become such an integral part of my life. It really helped to forge the person I’ve become and the relationships I’ve developed over the years. Although I’ve always had a love for a harder edged sound and through my teens (mid to late nineties) I was what I call a bedroom raver — listening to tape pack after tape pack but not old enough to go out raving. I was into all sorts from hardcore (my first love), old skool and early freeform to gabba and the rave hard trance. djs like Dougal, Sy, Slipmatt, Vibes, Clarkee, HMS, Producer and the awesome Mark EG, to name but a few who proper floated my boat back then and still do. Back then I didn’t really understand mixing or the real role of a dj but the seed was sown.
When I started clubbing to trance and hard house nights at UV it was the harder beats that captivated me and djs like Fergie, Lisa Lashes and Tidy Boys really turned me on to the sound. My first exposure to hard house was the Lisa Lashes’ ‘Lashed’ free Mixmag CD (way back when), long before I went out clubbing for the first time. I think the hardcore influence sound in some of the tracks on that album and awesome track selection helped me adjust to hard house when I first started clubbing — that CD still does it for me today, and it’s hard to believe just how long ago that was.
Looking back into how I got into hard dance there are so many individual things that come to mind — from gradual exposure to the scene and progression of my musical taste, and as well as the big guns local MK djs like Ward E and Craig Clark, it just seems I was destined to end up in the scene and in a big way, from those early rave days in my room to those hazy Ultra Vegas nights and beyond.
Steve Gillen & Simon Vegas @ CyberKitten
In my recent interview I mentioned you were someone I took inspiration from when I was learning to mix. Who inspired you when you first started out and where do you look today?
Well firstly I would like to thank you for those kind words and say what an honour it was just to have a mention in your interview, let along in that capacity.
Since I started out djing I’ve had many inspirations, and as well as djs influencing my sound or style. I’ve been inspired on a personal level too, and I owe that to my progression as much as anything else. Back then, when I put needle to record, my real inspiration came from the two MK djs I’ve already mentioned. I still have a lot of respect for those guys and they were definitely an important aid to my development. Along the way the likes of Craig Main, Richie G and the ever popular Steve Gillen, all have been a massive influence. Looking back on the b2b sets that I’ve played with these guys, are some of the sets that really stand out to me.
These days, I take a lot of inspiration from within, although more recently I’ve started to be inspired by James Mozelewski and Haydn Haydn — two djs I tip for big things. Their unique and boundless sound and style is made for the big room. My new partner in crime Justin Normus (Mark Harris) has done more than he’ll ever know, musically and otherwise — massive respect to ya fella, and a pair of big names that have really opened my eyes are the Plump DJs.
On a more personal level, over the years, there have been a lot of people who’ve inspired me. Those that have had more than just a musical influence are CyberKitten promoters Yojo and Col Davies and the rest of the CK crew, my friend and awesome house dj Lee Clarke, Simon Partridge of Who’s Hardcore, and pretty much all of my mates, with special mention to Kelvin Kaos and Horse who helped it all begin. And, not forgetting possibly the greatest influences in my life, and the ones that without none of this would have been possible — my parents, Harry and Jan and the rest of my crazy family. I owe these people a lot and thank them for everything they’ve done for me, along with the support they’ve given me.
Break Fast Bros @ CyberKitten vs B2T (DirtyFlirty debut)
You have recently started spinning breakbeat, with a bit dirty house and electro chucked in for good measure under your Slack Boy alias, and as one half of Break Fast Bros with Justin Normus. You’ve only been going a short time but have already had some solid gigs from the likes of DirtyFlirty and FunkDeluxe Tell us how it all came about and give me the low down on your partner in crime.
Well I got into breaks and dirty house after being given a copy of the Plump DJs Fabric Live CD last year. It quite literally blew me away! I’d always liked breakbeat, but never really exposed myself to it. At this stage, my ears were opening to a lot of new sounds, I’d also been getting into bands in a big way so when I caught that CD I felt something burn inside and I knew breaks was something I could get into as a dj. Around this time Justin ‘Harris’ Normus, a very close friend of mine, had started to spin breaks. I’d been mixing hard for a long time, but the more mature sound of breaks really grabbed me and I was having so much fun mixing it at home. As a result me and Harris decided to have a go at it together and hit the clubs, and the Break Fast Bros were formed. This only happened earlier this year, and I cannot believe how quickly things have progressed. We got our first break playing for CyberKitten’s DirtyFlirty Tour (B2t vs CK), followed with Funk Deluxe, playing at some of the countries leading nights. Twisted Filth (Northampton) and Smashed (Leicester) have also got us on board.
As this is such a new sound for me, I’m developing all the time. I think predominantly playing house nights gives us a real edge and offers something completely different for the crowd.
And the low down on Harris, well where do I start — I love the guy man, I really do. He’s one of the closest friends there could be, we’re more like brothers and we’re on such a tight wave length with each other. He’s been spinning hard house and techno for years, and started on breaks about a year before I did. He loves a party as much as I do, and we are known for getting up to, erm, mischief when we’re out and about. I’ve always respected and supported him and it’s such a pleasure to be experiencing the BFB sound taking off and having him to share it with. As a hard dj, although I’ve enjoyed b2b sets, I really love playing solo and being able to do my own thing but with Harris and mixing breaks I don’t feel the need to compromise my sound at all. Our tastes are really well suited to each other with no loss to our own individuality, and we’ve got a certain unforced natural chemistry behind the decks that comes from our close friendship. He’s an excellent dj as well, which always helps! I certainly look forward to what the future’s got in store for the pair of us.
As well as the B2B antics, your solo career has seen you play all over the Midlands and in London for CK Tours @ HeatUK, Polysexual, Storm, B2T and Bedlam, as well as Love Muzik, Afters, Insomniacz, and Frisky to name but a few. You also have the CyberKitten seal of approval, being resident for not just CK but Yojo and Col have tipped you for a residency with their hot house outfit DirtyFlirty. How does it feel to hold this upcoming dual residency and how did your involvement with CK come about?
Well I’ve had the pleasure of being involved with CK pretty much since it all began in 2003. My first set there was as one of the Ignition Boys collective at the launch party and the rest is, as they say, history. Back in the early days before I held a residency there I was actively involved with the promotion and developed a really strong friendship with Yojo from the start. I warmed to her aspiration and driven approach the first time we met. Along with connecting musically, our solid friendship sped up the development of our professional relationship and my involvement in CyberKitten.
Yojo’s got a wealth of experience in the entertainment field and a singularly unique approach to things. We share similar views and opinions and to this day enjoy regular chats, not just about music and the scene but conversations about the bigger picture. Prior to CK I was involved in the promotion of Ignition, as well as running my own night, Skatta (with Ward E). I used the experiences I had gained and invested a lot of energy into CK when it started up. After Ignition sadly closed its doors and we’d done all we could with Skatta, CK became my main focus. A residency soon followed and many a rip roaring party. Currently I’m an intrinsic part of the CyberKitten and it’s All Stars roster.
To have the dual residency coming up feels like a real milestone in my career as a dj, and something I’m very proud of. CyberKitten’s developed a rock solid reputation and djs are jumping over each other to play at their parties, so to hold a residency there is special. DirtyFlirty is developing from a second room outfit to a really solid promotion in its own right, and I’m very excited about what the future holds. It’s developing a unique sound which Yojo’s coined ‘Rude House’, a risqué blend of electro, house and breaks and the dj roster is already very strong and unique. I’m honoured to soon hold a residency in both rooms, and cannot wait for DF to really take off. I think it’s destined to become a formidable player in the scene in the same way CK has. It has what it takes, most importantly a brilliant team behind it.
One of the best things about CK and now DF is that they’ve been conceived from a unique idea and developed with relentless passion: neither were created to cash in on the scene. CK started off from humble beginnings but with huge aspirations. Looking at its position in clubland now it’s a credit to all those involved, primarily it’s promoters Yojo and Colin, the resident djs and guest regs, and of course CK’s loyal clubbers, all who consistently bang the CK drum. The club night definitely retains that old skool family feeling, as anyone who goes will tell you. The talented team that make CK/DF such a power house promotion aren’t reliant on a big budget (wall to wall) A-list dj line up to show clubbers a good time, and they always manage to throw an amazing party.
Simon Vegas @ CyberKitten Vs Lashed Euphoria
Do you have any productions in the pipeline and can we expect any Slack Boy tunes to accompany the Vegas material?
Oh without a doubt, we’re (Break Fast Bros) going to be getting in the studio this year and plan on producing tracks from now, and well into next. We’re in the process of arranging studio time with Alex at SL Productions to start working on some unique material. Also collaborations with Stupid Fresh, GroovePounder and Haydn Haydn are in the pipeline. There’s also up and coming artists out there I would love to, and hope to work with.
There seems to be a real fresh injection of passion and talent happening in the scene right now and a new wave of producer/djs are taking it by storm. I feel it’s helping push the industry forward and think we’re in the middle of a real time of change and progression. Is a really exciting time to be a dj and clubber alike. People have been waiting for something new to happen, and think the amalgamation of genres is a catalyst to this change. The boundaries in the house scene are more blurred than they’ve ever been, and that’s something all djs can now take advantage of and join in the progression with a unique sound rather than just jumping on the back of what’s already being done. I want any production I do to support this ethos, and looking to getting started soon.
I’ve also got some more hard stuff planned for the near future, as I’ve not been as heavy production front over the past couple of years and what to get back on that front. Watch this space!
So what sort of tunage can clubbers expect from a typical Simon Vegas set?
Well I’m pretty focussed on NRG at the minute, as I have been for the majority of my time djing. I still have a love for the darker and heavy side of the sound, although I like to mix this up with some more groovy little monsters, as well as really techy stuff and intelligent NRG. I am always creeping in my older records and sifting through my back cat to find forgotten classics. Tunes like BK and Andy Farley’s ‘Step Away’ and Project Mayhem’s ‘Hurricane’ have never left my box and are still as devastating to a dance floor today as they were years ago. It’s great to see people’s reactions when they’re hearing them for the first time, and it sometimes hard to believe just how long ago they were released.
There’s always plenty of hoovers in there too, and producers like Riggsy, Alex Calver, DNG, Karim, DMF, Ben Stevens and the infallible Paul Glazby are regular features in my sets. I like to stick to NRG, but explore all the angles within the genre to get the most out of it and give my sets a real direction. And always expect it to be delivered as an onslaught of fierce percussion, heavy bass and with a passion and energy that I just can’t help but exuberate when behind a set of decks.
And with your breakbeat/electro house head on?
Where do I start? There’s so many great producers our there it’s almost like being spoilt for choice as a dj in this field. I love jackin’, funky breakbeat and electro house, and love sneaking old school tracks and bootlegs in. I also love warming a set up with quite subliminal dirty house, and progressing up through into the breakbeat. You can expect whumping basslines, and a jackin’ beat, but really you can always expect the unexpected. We’ve (Break Fast Bros) not even explored all of the options with the tracks we’ve got, and not even played them all out yet, so the next few months is going to be an exciting time for us and anyone who sees us play. We’ve got a lot in store for the sets we’ve got coming up and anyone who’s seen us play lately should defo catch up with us again soon, as there’s so much more to our sound than anyone’s heard and we’ve got a few surprises in store.
Vegas Hops @ CyberKitten Filthy Sunday Stomper — MK
What’s the most unusual request you have ever had as a dj?
I’ve had a few odd ones, but most recently in Leicester I was asked in the middle of a breaks set if I had any Robbie Williams or Will Young. I was as polite as I could be in saying no, but they seemed in a bit of huff when then went back and sat down and I couldn’t help but have a laugh about it. After our set, I went up to her and explained in the nicest possible way we’d been booked to play breaks and it wasn’t that kind of night. I think they left not long after that lol.
Do you have an if all else fails guaranteed floor filler?
To be honest these days I don’t. I used to play ‘The Dawn’ a lot, but have since laid that tune to rest. I’ve spent years filling my (hard) box with the tunes I carry around with me now, and it’s more of a full box of weapons! I call them my power tools lol, and have a lot of fun putting sets together using them. It’s the same with breaks really, although I have got one little number that I’m giving a hammering at the minute — ‘Dub Child’ by Bogey Man. The bass line is sick, and I just love seeing the room go off when it drops!!
You are known for your crazy antics! I have far too many funny stories that start “do you remember when Simon . . . ” What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Ha ha ha! I like it! As for the craziest thing I’ve ever done, well there’s too many things to mention — it’s like asking a dog what his favourite bone was LOL! Suffice to say, I just go with the flow and live for the party and to have a good time! We should open this question up to anyone reading that knows me and see what they think the craziest thing I’ve ever done is — answers on a postcard please!
Answers below people. Tee hee!! This Friday 6th October, you are playing B2B with HyperVixen (a fellow CK resident, but some may not know she is also your little sister!) for CyberKitten Accelerate @ Fever in Northampton. This isn’t the first time you two have graced the decks together, how was your first b2b in the CK Room @ Frantic vs Storm?
Ahh the first set we did b2b was amazing, a real pleasure and the crowd were loving it! We share a unique energy and zest for life, so when behind the decks together that shines through and the interaction we have is something only a brother and his kid sister could share. Not only that, but our sounds work really well together and we both just love to rock a crowd. That night it was the last set, and to keep everyone bouncing around at the pace isn’t always an easy task, but when the lights came up they were literally screaming and begging for more and when that happens you know you’ve done the business.
The set was made even more special with the surprise arrival of my Dad half way through the night — his band was playing in Nottingham and when they were done he jumped ship and headed to the Emporium. He’d seen me play before, way back when, but to have him there, to see us play b2b like that was really special, as he was so proud! He even managed to blag his way in with the bouncers lol — get in! Lynette (HyperVixen) and I have also played together at Love Muzik, and I cannot wait to do it again at CyberKitten. I think the fact that it’s a home show makes it that little bit more special. I’m so proud of her and what she’s achieved as a dj and love the fact that djing is a success we can really share with these b2b sets.

Did you ever imagine growing up you’d both end up being djs and what do your parents think? Who learnt first?
No way, we could never had predicted that! I don’t think it was something either of us planned for, it just kind of happened. Although Lynette was into the club scene before me, I started mixing a while before she did. I only learnt so I could mix at parties and the like, but after a short time I caught the bug and wanted to get into the clubs and just went for it. When I first got decks I think hoofing out music at every opportunity wasn’t exactly what my parents would have gone for, but after a short while they realised how into it I was and looking back they were very patient indeed and put up with all sorts. As soon as I started playing out, they were really supportive and encouraging and could see how much it meant to me.
By the time Lynette started mixing, neither of us were living at home so they never had to put up with her as well, I’m sure they were thankful ha ha! They’ve again been nothing but supportive to her as well, and they’re so proud of what we do and what we’ve achieved and I think they’re really happy we’re both doing it together as CyberKitten residents. We’ve both developed individually as djs, and very much done our own thing until this year where we’ve started playing together on occasion. It means we can blend our own unique styles, and it’s also avoided our b2b’s becoming too gimmicky.
I remember when she started mixing herself, and was watching me play out and just looked at me and said ‘You’re actually quite good, aren’t you?’! I remember that like it was yesterday, and it meant a lot for her to feel that and it gave me a real buzz. I like to think I’ve had an influence on her progression, and know she’s learnt a hell of a lot from her partner and my close friend Steve Gillen. I think it’s down to him she’s a dj, and he should be very proud of that.
So what do you guys actually have in store for the CyberKitten crew on Friday? I am gutted to miss this as I’ll be on holiday, so tell me what am I gonna miss?
Well where do I start — you’ve seen the line up! One thing that I’m really looking forward to at this party is the debut set of the very special lady in my life, Amy D, my wonderful girlfriend and rock of support. It’s her first club set and she’s warming up the main room b2b with MK rising star Kadee. She’s been mixing a while, but has really progressed her style and ability over the summer, and is more than ready to leave the bedroom for the main stage, and quite honestly I can’t wait. She has a flair and passion for the music she loves (party, bouncy hard house) that you just don’t see often enough these days, and her smile when she’s dropping a tune she loves is enough to fill a room on it’s own! She’s got an ear for the music, and tunes that will rock the place, even at that time and without being too predictable. John Vyse is an old friend of hers and they go back a long way, and I know she looks up to him and his style of bouncy classics, and I think he’s been a massive influence on her. Her sheer enthusiasm for this coming set is almost scary, and I can’t wait to hear her and Kadee do the business — I know they’re gonna work really well together!
On top of that, I have the pleasure of mixing it up in the DirtyFlirty courtyard as well as my main room set with HyperVixen. That I’m really look forward to — the opportunity to rock both rooms at a CyberKitten event on the same night is a rare one, and I think the only other person to have done that is fellow CK resident Nasty Neil E. It also highlights the support Yojo and Col have for what I’m doing, and that I’m thankful for that.

Yeah!
