Ivan Pereira (Yestermorrow/Atomizers/Techyon/Boundless) and his Never Ending Quest!

Reported by Jessica Alici / Submitted 17-12-18 13:38

Ivan Pereira has been a firm fixture in the Psychedelic Trance scene for many years now and is a member of some of the biggest and most successful acts in the genre including: Atomizers, Yestermorrow and Techyon to name a few! With two mammoth albums due for imminent release on monster label Iono Music, we decided the time had come to dig a little deeper and find out more about this multi-faceted guy!

At what age did music become so prominent in your life?

Music has always played a very central part in my life. When I was a teenager back in 1995; my Dad had a Disco, which he worked at late at night. So I was there all the time seeing the DJs playing and practicing. Sometimes they would teach me DJ skills on vinyl or show me some mixing ideas. I remember that amazing feeling - timeless moments I experienced whilst practicing. Then I started to work there sometimes as well, so music became not only a passion but a way to exist. So yeah, I think that music played a prominent role in my life when I was a teenager.

Do you remember the name of one of the first records that you bought?

Sure! What a memorable moment! The first record I bought was 'Artifakts' from PlastikMan. It’s all white cover is unforgettable.

Who were your early influences?

My main early influences were Nirvana, Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd, PlastikMan, Jean Michel Jarre, and Jeff Mills. In the old school trance genre they were: Hallucinogen, Green Nuns of the Revolution, GMS, Infected Mushroom, Astral Projection, Pleiadians, Rastalienz and Chi AD.

Did you always want to be a performer too?

At the beginning I was trying many different things to find out what could really make my heart tick… I studied mechatronics and arts first, but I knew that music was my deepest passion. Anyway, it’s nice to have this knowledge, so that now I can apply it when needed, not only in my compositions but also in my daily life.

What do you like the best about your work and what do you like the least?

The best part of my work is the process of sharing the music and of receiving feedback from people after working so many hours and putting my feelings into the music. To see and feel that people connect with it, that they understand what I mean through sound waves. It's kind of like a dream materializing in the present moment; for this I am truly blessed! The least pleasant part of my job is being so far away from my dear family while I'm touring long hours.

Do you feel you’ve changed as an artist over the years? If so; how?

I feel that over the years we all change as beings, so it's inevitable to change as an artist as well. I think that I'm constantly learning and over time we all realise this. My style of production has changed, my techniques, even the melodies are more "mature".... I'm now enjoying making lower bpm tracks as well… I think that I'm getting more patient when working and paying more attention to detail than I perhaps used to when I first started producing. Back then I wasn't even aware of their existence - these little details!

Have you thought about doing a solo act or do you always prefer to be part of a duo?

Actually, I have a solo act called Holophonik. It was my first project, but it's resting for a while now. I've always been a sociable person, creating music with my partners makes the process much more fun and pleasant. At the same time, we enhance each other’s skills and evolve together. Sharing those precious moments of creation with them is surely a gift.

Have you ever experienced stage fright or suffered from writer’s block? How did you cope with this?

Sure! As music is something so personal, it's sometimes hard to deal with the possibility of judgement that comes with it, but I think this is all part of the process… Stage fright is common. To avoid it, I try to get to the venue early so I can get used to the vibe, and to give myself time to interact with the people outside of the work. This way I find I relax more and am able to feel more connected.

With writer's block it’s different…. Many hours inside the studio can kill inspiration, daily stress also doesn't help. In this case, I try to free my mind from these blocked moments by going out with my family to a nice place in nature, doing Yoga and going to see friends. These things help me to recharge my inspiration and creativity…. I also like to watch movies - this helps me to cleanse my mind.

What are the parts you love the most about the psy-trance scene?

What I love the most about psy-trance scene is the culture itself. The sustainability research, the way people gather to co-create alternative ways of being on this planet, the peaceful environment, the beautiful families that are being raised inside this movement… The gatherings. It's amazing to see this "eco-system" being built and to be part of if somehow.

What are your other loves apart from music?

Besides music, my passions are travelling with my family, gardening, designing stages and also carpentry. If I could do all this together while producing music, life would be perfect!

If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self what would it be?

I would definitely say to my younger self: please dive deeply into music theory while you are still a kid. Have patience to learn! And also - please take care on the road whilst riding your motorbike in Thailand after parties!

Tell us about your upcoming plans musically? What’s in the pipeline?

Yestermorrow is working on its second album which is 70% done and will be released on Iono. We have many killer collaborations on the way with Grouch, Zen Mechanics, Magik, Atomizers, Sonic Species. We also have some other upcoming releases on Iono, Nano and Iboga.

Atomizers album is really almost ready, like 90% done, so you can expect another massive psy-prog bomb on the way very soon - also on Iono. We are really excited to release this album, that shows some awesome improvements in our way of producing.

I also have a side project with my wife, Bárbara. It's a techno project called Boundless. We’ve already released some tracks on Iboga and Ibogatech, and our first EP together with Antimatter is going to be out on the 17th December.

What would you say are your best and worst traits?

I think my best traits are my focus, my dedication, and now my ability to pay close attention to detail and also my resilience. My worst traits are expecting things to be done quicker than my capabilities, and that I am frequently excessively demanding on myself.

If you wrote a book about your life what would it be titled?

If I wrote a book about myself it would be entitled "The never ending quest".

Ivan - many thanks for taking the time out to do this interview! Best of luck with all your future endeavours! Smile X
