Trevor McLachlan & HeatUK’s big 5th birthday double-header

Reported by e99 / Submitted 03-10-06 01:29

HarderFaster was first introduced to Trev back in December 2005 when he became a monthly resident for the long running night Twisted, after having consistently delivered the goods to their crowd on a bi-monthly basis. Since then, his production career has taken off with a big way, and several of his tracks have become amongst the biggest anthems of the year - being signed to big labels in the scene such as Impact, tidy and AddictionDigital. A knack for creating complex, emotional, exciting riffs has proved to be his forte, and his energetic hard trance sound has followed on from where the likes of Phil Reynolds and Steve Blake started.

HeatUK has always championed the best new hard trance talent, and after having Trevor do the business for them several times, they’ve now got him down to play a key role in their massive 5th birthday celebration — as one of the headliners on their pre-party aboard The Silver Sturgeon. 2006 has been a great year so far for this rising star, but we’re not alone in predicting even bigger things for him. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who’s got a bad word to say about him in fact!

It’s been quite an amazing year for you, with many of your productions becoming some of the biggest anthems in the hard dance scene, and your residency for Twisted bringing in some seriously big gigs. Did you think you’d reach this point?

Hi. Yeah it has been an amazing year so far, and no I didn’t think I would reach this point at this stage. There’ve been a lot of highs for me this year, namely on the production front, my residency with Twisted and also some great gigs as well. But the productions behind me this year have helped getting the gigs through, so it comes down to the production this year for me I think. The Twisted residency has also helped me greatly, and it’s been awesome playing monthly at the Fridge for an event steeped in such history as Twisted. Craig Paxton in particular, Lee Bridle and all at Most Wanted have been very supportive of me this year, and for that I thank them.

’The Voice’ and ‘Rain Down On Me’ in particular will go down as classics of the era, I think. Did you realise you were onto winners when you wrote them?

Every time I go into the studio I know exactly the type of track I want at the end of it, taking in with me plenty of ideas, samples, vocals etc, and these tracks were no different. I get excited about all the tunes I produce to be honest, but you never know how they are going to go down out in the clubs. I was just lucky that these tracks were accepted extremely well by both the clubbers and other djs.

I sent ‘The Voice’ to Phil Reynolds not long after I’d finished it, and was absolutely stoked that he was caining it from the outset. He then wanted to sign it for Impact, and also remixed it, and to me, that was amazing. Phil is a dj and producer I have always respected, so it was pretty special to have him and Steve Blake sign and release it on Impact. Not long after ‘The Voice’ was released it was played by Dave Pearce on his Dance Anthems show on Radio1, which completely blew me away.

‘Rain Down On Me has probably been the most uplifting track I’ve done and was picked up by Si Paul’s World Of Trance label. The vocals of Jennie Rix on this track really gave it an edge. Her vocals worked so well on it, so again I was lucky that it all came together for me in the studio. Both of these tracks, and many of my others are engineered by Alf Bamford (Technikal) and I owe a lot to him. His friendship, support and guidance in the studio has benefited me greatly, so I’d like to take this chance to thank him for that. The guy is unbelievable in the studio, and we’ve got a tremendous understanding of each other. And one of my most enjoyable sets this year was mine and Alf’s b2b at Twisted in August, so we also play extremely well together.

Which vocalists have you used on your tunes, and who else would you really like to work with?

My main vocalist has been Jennie Rix, which I was lucky enough to meet through Alf. She’s got an amazing voice, which once laid down, just seems to work so well on dance tracks. She has provided the vocals on 3 of my tracks, and I’ve just used samples on the others. The vocal on ‘The Voice’ for example comes from on old house track that I own. There’s no other vocalist that I have in mind to work with in the future, but I am sure there will be more.

Do you feel that your music is influenced by other musicians? Ones outside of hard dance for example?

My music is influenced by a lot of things to be honest, not particularly by any one outside of hard dance. Although before getting into dance music, I was into bands like Green Day, Foo Fighters and in particular an Australian band called Grinspoon. These bands have a pretty tough edged sound, which has influenced me into the tougher side of dance music. And when I first started clubbing, it was to the trance of the late ‘90s I was listening to, so that certainly had an affect on me in the beginning. Lately I’ve been more into the electro, techier and psy influenced sounds, which you can hear on my latest productions.

Trev with Phil Reynolds

It’s been a tumultuous year for The Fridge. Do you think that Twisted has managed to keep things bubbling away nicely?

Well yeah, it has been a pretty tough year for the Fridge hasn’t it? After the raid, and having to move venues for one event, did hurt us, and really took away any momentum we had from the start of the year. It took a couple of parties, but things are getting back to normal I think, and that was proven when our August event had over 1100 people through the doors, and it was great to see the place pumping again. Then when Heat rammed it 3 weeks later, I knew it was back. Most Wanted have worked really hard to get it back to the way it was, and they’ve been instrumental in its resurgence with events like Innovate and Polysexual South getting the numbers back as well. Onwards and upwards.

Which other djs would you be really excited to hear play at Twisted?

It’s really hard to gauge what djs will work at certain events and which ones won’t. We’ve had line ups where I’ve thought, yep, this is gonna be a cracker, and it had disappointed, and other events where I thought we’d struggle but have rammed the place. It’s really a tough business to be in sometimes, but with Ben Bennett on board now oozing enthusiasm, along with Craig Paxton and myself, we have a few things up our sleeve. There are a few djs I would like to get to The Fridge that you don’t see that often in London, so hopefully we can get them over. I’m really excited about Yoji and Scot Project for the Birthday on 7th October — two djs you don’t see that often in London, so bring that on.

What next? Do you have aspirations to break out of the London bubble and play around the country?

Yeah definitely! I’ve just started playing a bit more out of London, which has been an awesome experience. Playing to different crowds in different areas of the country is always a challenge, as what goes down well in London, may not quite work somewhere else. I’m opening up the main room at the Tidy Weekender in Wales next week which is gonna be wicked, and I played in Newquay over the summer, which was great. I’m playing the main room at Storm in Coalville in November, which I am really looking forward to as well. I played there last year at the Emporium and it’s a wicked club.

Apart from that, more production for sure! The follow up to ‘Rain Down On Me’ will be out next month on World Of Trance called ‘Feels So Good’, a collaboration with Ashley James which will be coming out on Impact. There’s also two remixes coming out in October. And I’ve also got a release on Tidy Trax in November, so definitely more production too.

You played out in Ibiza for Tidy vs Extreme Euphoria this summer. That must have been pretty mad. How was it playing in the main room at Es Paradis?

Yeah it was awesome. As you know, Ibiza breaks all the rules when it comes to partying, anything goes out there, and Es Paradis, what a club. The clubbers are up for it every single night of the week, and when they’re going off to your music, it brings out that bit extra in your sets, so it all works well together.

Trev with Technikal

Do you think hard dance has a future in Ibiza?

Going on this year’s parties, yeah I do. The Tidy and Exteme Euphoria brand has really taken off out there this year, with some absolutely rammed parties, and off the hook nights. I think Ibiza is educated enough to accommodate all styles of music, they even had bands out there this year, so that was something different.

You’re playing for HeatUK’s 5th Birthday extravaganza on October 14th — more specifically on the pre-party aboard The Silver Sturgeon boat. What are your earliest memories from their events?

Heat provided some defining moments in my clubbing and dj’ing career, and I have lots of great memories for lots of different reasons. Their earlier events at Turnmills were my first forays to Heat, and it was all about the music. Heat were consistent in their quality of music — I guess some things never change. Damo, Anton and the team work bloody hard and have done for years, and it shows in the events they put on.

How does it feel to be playing for them after having enjoyed their events for so long?

I’ve played for Heat in Amsterdam, on the boat over to Germany and at various events in London, and they never fail to disappoint in their events and professionalism as well. I really can’t wait for the birthday, and thanks to Damo and the team for inviting the Friendz brand to join them on the boat also. We’re all looking forward to it. And of course we can’t wait for Friendz’ Wynand Delport to do us proud in the main room at Koko. The whole day and night is gonna be wicked! I always love playing for Heat, so thanks for the opportunity guys. Here’s to more great parties…. And many more birthdays!

Trev and Technikal behind the decks

What can we expect from your set then? Have you got some exciting new bits that you are looking forward to playing? A few Heat classics? Hmm?

Lately I’ve been really mixing my sets up, playing anything from some tough electro sounds, to trance, techno and of course hard dance. So I think I will be playing a mixture of everything that’s been doing it for me lately. I’ve also got a couple of new productions to air as well. I finished a remix of an Adrenaline Dept. track recently for a new label, which has been going down well, and also am really keen to play out a new track I’ve produced with Brad Thatcher that we’ve almost finished.

Will you be going the full 16 hours with the boat party plus the main event at Koko? How is Trevor McLachlan when it comes to stamina?

Hmmm, ask me at 6am on Sunday October 15th… if you can find me.

Absolutely the best, most consistant rolling out of hard trance tracks in the last 12 months has come from Trev, everything with his name on it is pure gold.

Add to that the fact he is absolutely everything a great trance and hard dance dj should be.

Then top that off with him being one of the nicest blokes in the dance scene that I've ever met and you've got the ingredients for the star that is Trevor McLachlan.

The Future is bright for Mr M.C. thats for sure.
