Tidy up with Lisa Lashes

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 17-09-08 21:36

Criss-crossing the world with her hard-edged sound and Lashed brand as both number one female and number one hard dance DJ, Lisa lashes is at the top of her game. Now firmly established in the hearts and minds of many, HarderFaster wondered if there was any more we can expect from the Lashed one?

No doubt there is, as you don't get to such lofty heights only to jack it all in. Ahead of her set at October's massive Tidy Weekender 15, we sent some questions through to get the skinny from Lisa!

At number 83 last year you were not only the highest placed hard dance DJ but also the highest placed female DJ. How does it feel to be flying the flag?

It's fantastic to have an accolade of Number 1 female and top hard dance DJ. It really helps with international bookings as a lot of promoters worldwide take the top 100 as their DJ bible when booking DJs. I'm very lucky to be able to fly the flag for the harder style of dance music!

What do you think it is that gets you voted for in such large numbers across the world and how can more women follow your lead and break into this male dominated world?

I would imagine if I saw the figures of who votes where, there would be a vast amount from Canada, Ireland and European voters - I play there regularly so have a big fan base. Still if I knew how to get more women into DJing, I would be a very rich lady!

With your worldwide DJ commitments, in places like Korea, Canada, Cyprus, Poland and of course Ibiza and the UK, what do you think can and should be done to help hard dance music get out to and be recognised by the masses more?

People have this stigma that hard dance is the "bastard child" of dance music. I just know that wherever I play abroad, whether it's new clubs or old, people love the music I play and other harder edged DJs, so we're definitely doing something right and getting our style of music out across the world.

When are we going to see another Lashed in the UK?

It takes months of organizing to do an event right and unfortunately I've not had the time to commit to this. Fingers crossed, next year we will try and put on a few Lashed nights.

You’re appearing at this October’s Tidy Weekender 15. How does it feel to be involved again?

I love being involved in the Tidy brand and the Weekenders. It’s a great weekend, not just for the people going but for all us DJs too as we don’t get a lot of time to see each other. It's a great time to catch up, discuss music and have a few drinks with our fellow musicians.

The line up is more diverse than it’s ever been. As a DJ known for playing two differing styles, what are your thoughts on this expansion?

It's great to mix things up, nothing stays the same forever, and Tidy have always been at the forefront of change.

That second sound is breaks. How is this musical front going for you and will we see you busting out some beats at TW15?

I would love to do a alternative set at Tidy as I’ve got some brilliant breaks/electro tunes that I nicked from Krafty Kuts and Micky Slim the last time I saw them in Ibiza.

We have seen more and more big hard dance DJs playing house, psy trance, breaks, in fact anything other that hard dance. How important do you think it is for a DJ to be able to mix and mash up genres in a set and why?

I don't think you can have a one track mind when it comes to music anymore. More and more I see different genres merging into each other which is a great thing - as long as its great music! I love the fact that BK can make a tune, I can play it and Paul van Dyk can put it on his album!

You’ve been expanding your discography over the past year with single and album releases, can you tell us a little of your process of moving from inception to production?

The main difference between me choosing whether to play a track and actually producing the track is the level of time involved. It's a quick process deciding whether a tune makes the cut into my records, but is a really lengthy process producing the track. If I don't feel that it's quite right, then the midnight oil has to be burned!!

How do you go about producing your tracks? Do you find it easier to do collaborations or just work directly with an engineer?

There's four or five engineers that I mainly work with and they're the people that I love to do collaborations with - so its both pretty much the same for me. For instance, I've recently worked with Alf (Technikal) and BK on collaboration tracks on their new albums (out now or very soon!) and then they'll put dates in for me to do a tune for my label.

I’m sure you are constantly asked how you got into DJing, but how do you plan to get out of it? What do you look forward to in retirement?

Haven't thought about retiring yet, but I imagine if I did, I'd still be involved in the music industry somehow as that's my love.

And who do you see stepping into your shoes as the Queen of hard dance? Got any protégés?

I've not found a protégé as yet - always on the look out though!!

Remember you've got until Monday 22 October to enter our massive competition in association with Tidy to win a gold class chalet at TW15. Click here for more info.
