Meet a new face at South West Four - Anil Chawla

Reported by Tom Cypher / Submitted 13-08-08 11:21

A true star in the making, Anil Chawla has swiftly risen through the ranks from being nominated as one of Mixmag’s original ‘Future Heroes’ to landing a residency at leading UK club night Together, releasing tracks on leading UK labels like Cr2, Saved , Urban Torque and Global Underground which has seen the flood gates well and truly open with remixes coming in thick and fast.

With only a few years experience under his belt his DJ sets have seen him embrace a blossoming worldwide tour schedule that regularly takes him to Poland, Canada, South America, India and beyond, Anil’s mojo is definitely rising and shows no sign of slowing down and we’re proud to welcome him onto the line up of this years South West Four festival as one of the many ‘new faces’ at this years event. We catch up with Anil after he has just touched down following a twelve-date tour of South America.

For those that don’t know you can you introduce who yourself and your sound?

I’m Anil, I live in Kentish Town. I love cheese, trashy TV and bad films. Musically, house is most certainly my bag. My MySpace site has samples of my tracks and links to download mixes – www.myspace.com/anilchawla.

As one of this years ‘new faces’ at South West Four, how does it feel to be up there on the same bill as Sven Vath, Francois K, Tiefschwarz and Green Velvet and what can we expect from your set?

It’s a seriously huge line-up, so it’s quite an honour and SW4 has such a good reputation. I’ll be sure to hang around all day and check out the DJs. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Francois K and Green Velvet as they were both excellent when they played at ‘Together’ last year, Nic Fanciulli is certainly on my ‘to see’ list.

You’ve just returned from tour of South America, how was it and what were the highlights?

Pacha in Buenos Aires was a particular highlight for me – it’s a club that I’ve read and heard about so much before and it lived up to every bit of hype! The people were so receptive and up for a great party. Also Guatemala was pretty amazing too, we played an open air festival to around 3000 people and the crowd were going nuts! The whole trip was amazing – I was touring with Jim Rivers, who was really cool to hang around with, which helps loads when you’re away with someone for 12 days.

I’ve uploaded a few videos, if anyone wants to check them out:

You regularly play all over the globe, where else is exciting you at present?

There’s a really cool developing house scene in India at the moment – it’s very fresh over there and everyone’s really enthusiastic about the music. I went over to Goa in December for a festival on the beach, which was great fun, and I’m heading back for a four date tour in September – really looking forward to getting back over!

What are you currently working on in the studio?

My major project at the moment is my debut album in collaboration with Dale Anderson. It’s titled Roadhouse and will be released on Global Underground early next year. It’s been really nice to work on an album as we’ve had the chance to explore some new sounds, even ranging from jazz to vocal tracks, we’ve recently collaborated with Justin Robertson, who has written and sung a track for us, which I’m quite excited about to say the least!

What inspires you when you go into the studio?

Generally, a hangover from the night before always helps to get the ball rolling!

What was the moment you decided this was the life for you?

I’ve loved dance music since quite a young age (I used to listen to rave tapes when my brother drove me to school). Ever since then, I’ve had a love affair with all things house and I couldn’t picture my life without it.

What is next for you?

At the moment, getting the album wrapped up is priority number one, which should be done very shortly. Aug/Sep are fairly busy too with the India tour and gigs around the country. Including SW4 of course – it’s shaping up to be a great year, I can’t wait!

geometry dash is soundtrack is more than just background noise; it's the soul of the game. The music is meticulously selected to enhance the gameplay, infusing each level with its distinct energy and personality.
