Getting Lashed with the first lady of hard dance!

Reported by K8-e / Submitted 01-08-06 22:18

Lisa Lashes is a woman who needs little introduction. Dubbed the Queen of Hard Dance, there are few who can measure up to what she has achieved in her career. One of the original Tidy Girls with Anne Savage, Lisa brought a sexy brand of hard house to the masses delivered in her own unique style. In recent years pushing her now famed Lashed brand she has toured the world, playing from Ibiza to China to America and to audiences of thousands.

The first and only female ever to be considered among the top ten djs in the world by DJ Mag, Lisa Lashes has truly set the bar. This Friday at Northampton’s Fever, Lisa joins forces with the mighty CK. CyberKitten Vs Lashed Euphoria kick-starts Lisa’s exclusive album tour for the new ‘Lashed Euphoria’ CD, giving me the perfect opportunity to put some questions to the lady herself.

Hey Lisa, welcome to Harderfaster.net. 2005 was a pretty big year for you and your Lashed brand, touring 30 clubs in 10 different countries from China through to South and North America. What have you been up to in 2006?

It’s been another busy busy year for me and Lashed. We started off with the Lashed Digital Download Tour in the UK and Ireland, which was a real success. I also worked on the mixed album, ‘Lashed Euphoria’, about to be released. And the summer has been pretty hectic with gigs every week in Ibiza and Tenerife and all over the UK as usual.

Your first gig was on a boat party on the River Severn in 1996, where you were discovered by the legendary Madders. Looking back on 10 years in the business, what would you say were the defining moments for you?

Well that was definitely the first most defining moment in my career as I was offered a residency at Sundissential straight after that. When I started playing abroad to sell out shows, especially the gig I did in a stadium in South Africa in front of 33,000 people. Being the first woman to be considered in the top ten of the prestigious DJ Mag Top 100. And I guess the most amazing project I have ever been involved in is the launch of my Lashed nights, which have been all over the world and lead to the release of several albums.

In the past you have been vocal in you support of vinyl, even though many larger djs play solely from CDs. What percentage of your set is vinyl these days?

I still play mainly vinyl. Finding it very hard to quit! I carry a few CDs with me of music I can’t get hold of on vinyl.

Let’s talk about production. You’ve obviously worked with some of the leading guys in the industry, from your earlier Tidy releases to more recently working with Ingo on one of my personal favourites of yours — ‘Desire’ (released on Gravity Trap), to working with arguably the hard dance king, BK, for your Riot! release. What’s next production wise? Have you been in the studio lately and do you plan to do vocals on any of your future releases?

I’ve done a few breaks tracks I’m pretty excited about, so we’ll see what happens with those. Vocals . . . maybe one day. It depends if it’s right for the production or not.

You have a new CD out on the 31st July, ‘Lashed Euphoria’, which is your sixth mix for the series, but the first under the Lashed guise. Tell us a bit more about this CD, I hear it’s got ‘Double 99’ on there, what a tune!

Yeah it’s like when Lashed meets Euphoria! It’s a 3 CD album and just like the Lashed philosophy, it’s eclectic. It’s hard house but it’s also techno, trance, breaks and classics too.

There is often a lot of speculation that big name dj mix CDs aren’t always hand made. Did you mix the CD personally?

I mixed it myself but technology is always there to help to make things sound perfect . . .

Is the sound of ‘Lashed Euphoria’ what we can expect to hear in a Lisa Lashes set these days? What tunes are in your box at the moment? Are there any that never leave?

The third CD is rather personal and it’s not something I would play out at the weekend; it’s got some of my fave tracks ever, like wicked breaks tunes that I can’t get enough of. The 2 first CDs reflect what I play in the main room. At the moment, I’m really into Technikal’s latest track on Tidy ‘More and More’ and Alex Kidd & The Surgeons’ ‘Boot it Up’ is always in my box at the moment.

Your love of breaks is no secret, did you ever think of using a pseudonym for your non hard dance persona, like Anne Savage with Dumb Blonde? Do you feel you have overcome any preconceptions the breaks community may have had about you at the outset?

The response I get from my breaks productions is always very positive from clubbers when I play them out and people in the industry. Well-recognised breaks guys like Marky from Krafty Kuts play my tracks so I guess that means I have overcome some preconceptions. I’m not looking into a pseudonym at the moment but we will see what happens.

Do you read what’s written about you on message boards and in magazines, if so how do you cope with the negative press/comments that are part and parcel of being so well known (people just love to slate those that do well!)?

You can’t be loved by everyone, that’s only natural. You just have to learn how to take the criticism to your advantage because it can help make you progress. But I have to admit some comments I’ve heard are gratuitous and should be ignored.

You are one of the patrons for the Pink Ribbon Foundation. Tell us a bit more about your involvement in this great cause?

Yes I am one of the patrons for the Pink Ribbon Foundation alongside Joan Collins, Jerry Hall, Joseph Fiennes . . . it’s a grant-making trust that supports breast cancer charities. I play at events they organise like the magazine launch party, and give awareness everywhere I can: interviews, promotional material like on my website, flyers etc.

Chess conjures up images of geeky nerds (or maybe I’m just remembering the chess club I used to go to) so I was surprised and pleased to read that you play as well! When did you last play a game and did you win?

Yes I love playing chess. The fact that a game can last days is incredible. Of course I won the last game I played, are you trying to challenge me?!

Ooooo shall I bring my travel chess set Friday?!?!?

Speaking of which, as part of your ‘Lashed Euphoria’ album tour you’re teaming up with the mighty CyberKitten at their new venue Fever in Northampton this Friday (August 4th). CyberKitten are renowned for their loyal band of mad-for-it clubbers, storming residents and relentless party vibe, and Lashed has set venues on fire across the world. What can the clubbers expect?

I’m really excited about the gig. It’s going to be in a small venue and I don’t really get the chance to get so close to clubbers anymore. It’s always so refreshing to play in an intimate club, as there is more one to one interaction with people than when I play in a massive venue or festival.

Thanks Lisa! Perhaps I’ll leave my chess set at home this time though . . .

I’ll be too busy ‘aving it large down the front. WOOOOT!!!!!

From: DMX on 5th Aug 2006 20:36.19
What's this nonsense about DJ Mag considering her amongst the top 10 DJs in the world? Firstly, isn't it DJ Mag's readers who decide? Secondly, what the hell are they thinking?

I could go to one progressive night and see 10+ DJs who are far better than she is. What are they using to judge her ability?

From: shezmetz on 6th Aug 2006 14:32.46
lisa is a lovely lady and a right laugh...she deserves to be where she is today. she has worked hard for it...good luck to her for the future.
