Lilly Allen: Reviewed Reported by Adam Symbiosis / Submitted 15-07-09 10:02 Somerset House is currently playing host to a range of artists as this year’s Summer Series sponsored by Coca Cola. The auspicious surroundings will see some of the hottest acts the pop scene has to offer, kicking off with Grace Jones and closing with Calvin Harris. HarderFaster sent Adam Symbiosis to check out some of the dates – first up Lilly Allen Well this is something different. After a couple of weeks of laying low, I ventured out for a few hours to see the first of a series of gigs down at Somerset House. With their Summer Series this year hosting artists like Pendulum, The Ting Tings and Calvin Harris, I decided to start with something a bit more leftfield – at least for someone mostly gig-shy – and headed in to see pop starlet Lilly Allen. Of course there’s always the support act to see first and for Lilly, Just Jack had the honours. Singing his second single, Doctor Doctor, this was my first live experience of the North London born singer and his synth backed music. Of course well known for his track Starz In Their Eyes, the catchy, but also mostly middle of the road music, was nice if unremarkable. What did impress me was his interaction with the crowd. Having seen Blur recently and being more than disappointed by Damon Albarn’s lacklustre approach to getting involved between tracks, I was pleasantly surprised as Jack Alsopp’s patter flowed easily between songs and even occasionally during the tracks too. The Day I Died, a mournful yet bitter-sweet ode to a last day warmed the heart and was one of my favourite tracks. The surrounds of the courtyard of Somerset House provided an interesting backdrop to the small stage, flanked by Coca Cola banners. Ahead of us a crowd of cool kats, parents and kids and the assorted collection of Saturday night randoms grooved away. One fashion victim looked as if she hadn’t noticed the oppressive rainclouds that had built up overhead – maybe she thought the rain wouldn’t affect her, yet it wouldn’t have explained her orange hue and why it stopped just above her ankles. Weird. Closing his set to Disco Friends and more disco based fun, the rain finally came. While the stage hands set up for the next act, some reggae played, then some drum and bass, then some rock music, all pretty random, but it got me thinking who chose the music? Coca Cola, Lilly Allen, the stage hand? Who knows, but we have a good chat as they play Incredible by General Levy. After a good 45 minutes of getting wet and cries of “Lilly! Lilly!” the star of the show finally appears and I get myself down to the pit for some photos. It doesn’t take too long to get the shots I need and I make my way back to the crowd. An overzealous bouncer doesn’t see things my way though. Photographers will go where he wants, when he wants and I wasn’t going anywhere and the strange rules of commercial photography become apparent. After a 20 minute “heated discussion” with the chap on the merits of having both a camera and press pass, I’m taken with the rest of the photographers to their pen in the rear and it’s only through the intervention of the PR crew that I’m finally able to get back into the crowd to watch what little of the show is left. Lilly, along with Kate Nash, always evokes the spirit of the blitz in me. It’s the style and sound of the way she delivers her songs. Of course not a bad thing and just like her support act she has great interaction with the crowd, though some of the parents might have thought better of some of the choice words she used – give that girl a swear box! The courtyard became a sea of umbrellas as the rain streamed down and yet Lilly slowly seemed to strip off! Not a bad thing either, especially considering the pictures featured in the News Of The World the next day, and with her smoking “keeping her warm” she launched into He Wasn’t There dedicated in part to her old man, Keith. The crowd really got into Smile – the drum and bass interlude makes waves – while during and especially towards the end of many tracks Lilly twiddled away on a kaoss pad, adding interesting effects and certainly different to the usual tambourine! The Fear is quickly followed by Britney Spear’s Womanizer before she runs off stage for a quick break. Finishing the show with Fuck You – dedicated to those “lovely” chaps at the BNP, the panda pop sounding music seems almost misplaced with the challenging lyrics – while It’s Not Fair wraps it all up. Like the show itself with its two short acts, it almost seems over far too soon. Of course being inside the courtyard at Somerset House was cool and the music was affable, certainly an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours and having properly heard some of his other stuff I’ll now check out more music from Just Jack. As a good warm up, I’m looking forward to seeing Calvin Harris next week! The Summer Season continues till the 20th of July and more info can be found here Photos courtesy of Adam Halawi.
