But most clubbers go to clubs to see DJs that they want to see. The line up is by far the most important thing that determines where most people go. I'd say DJs were pretty essential really.
Just look at Gatecrasher Heaven as an example. When PvD plays, the club is a sell out. From a promoter's point of view he's good value for money as he's guaranteed to get people through the door. Hardly 'unneccessary' IMO.

Back when I liked HD I thought he played the most mind-numbingly dull HD sets i'd ever heard. The lack of personality emanating from the decks was almost blinding in it's intensity. Yet it gets worse: He's now playing lukewarm funky house, and from his tune selection and turntable panache seems to be aspiring to reach the dizzying heights of "forgettable bedroom DJ"
