A Serious Trance Vaccine Reported by sjtland_sarjentcaner / Submitted 17-08-05 00:28 Ever heard of a Serious Trance Vaccine? Sounds like one of those space-age wonders of medicine, doesn’t it? On Thursday 3 August I found out what it was for myself, at the Serious Member’s Party in conjunction with Vaccine. But has it cured me of my trance addiction? Hmmmm, read on… Serious is a night that runs every third Saturday at The Cross. Residents include Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell, Simon Patterson, Adam Sheridan, along with a load of other big name DJs that rock the place on a regular basis. Those into trance will know all this already, as run by Jules’ brother Sam, it is one of the most well-known and well-respected trance nights in London at the moment. Having been a Serious member for about five years, it’s a night very dear to my heart. They say “having fun is a serious business”, and so is making friends. I have had a lot of both from Serious. They also treat members very well and listen to them — something that has always been important in the dance industry. After all, without a following what have you got? A club with more bar staff (and lager louts) than funky revellers. Serious has put on a series of free parties in the years I have been around for ‘Dusted’ members (the other half of the night playing funky, twisted and electro house), so after we were charged for Seriousworld this year (grrr) naturally us ‘Trancers’ were a little bit disgruntled. A well-aimed hint (actually make that about 100) on the Serious message board and new promoter Natalie decided we might have a point. So, the Vaccine/Serious member’s party was born. Vaccine is new night to me, a fresh clubbing concept playing host to the cream of UK, Dutch and Danish talent that rocks Turnmills monthly. Recent DJs have included Misja Hesloot, Phynn, Corderoy, Goldenscan, Michael Splint, Ruben De Ronde, Ehren Stowers and many more. I suppose dance music marriages already made in heaven should have allayed any fears we had that it might be strange for another outfit to be hosting our party, but I have to say I was a little bit dubious as to whether it would be up to Serious’ extremely high standards. It most definitely was. The line up for the night kicked off with Will B (Vaccine), followed by Mike Foyle (V), Jonnie Pickering (Serious), Simon Patterson (S), The Viceroy (Tom Godwin, V), and ending with Ben Beaton (V). Tom is also the promoter of the night. Si Patterson Having arrived a little worse for wear after a hard day, the first vodka red-bull in the bar was a welcome relief and the music from the dance floor was most definitely music to my ears. There were people ‘having it’ in there right from the start thanks to the Vaccine boys’ skills in making us forget it was a Thursday ‘school night’, slowly building it up so that by the time Jonnie made his appearance even I had managed a little dance. I’m not very good at tune-spotting but I am reliably informed that the one I particularly enjoyed was Tiesto’s ‘Suburban Train’. By this time all the Serious members and most the Vaccine regulars were on the dance floor showing their support. By the end of Jonnie’s set my good intentions to take it easy had definitely gone out the window. Si (Simon Patterson) was on next. He played a techy set in line with most the recent sets I have seen him play. Being a bit of a ‘floaty’ trance girl, I usually don’t like it too techy, but this time it was nice to hear a bit of something different in the middle. Some of the tunes he played? Mike Fuengo’s ‘Caliente’, Marc Van Linden — ‘Forbidden Love’ and Koglin & Grant — ‘Sequential’ spring to mind. I am reliably informed by The Viceroy (aka Tom Godwin) who was on after, that he was a little scared at the pace Si was playing, how much everyone was bouncing around, and what he was going to lead off with as his first record to keep us all up there (he managed it expertly by the way). We ended with Ben Beaton who brought it all back with some classic trance (with the odd new belter thrown in). We were all enjoying ourselves so much, with Ben carrying it on until just before 4am. You’re always a winner with Serious, and now I’ve learnt, Vaccine regulars as we’re usually the last ones on the dance-floor anyway! Highlights of the night have to be spotting Mike Koglin (or Koggers as he’s known to people like me who are now familiar with him!) having a bit of a boogie in front of the DJ booth, bumping into Gavyn Mitchell, and seeing the most Serious trance members I have seen for a while out together, and of course watching Jonnie play again. So has this Serious-Vaccine cured me of my trance addiction? Yes, for now. But only until the Serious’ 9th birthday on the 20th August… and Vaccine on the 20th October. Damn, who am I kidding?! Jonnie Pickering short interview Jonnie Pickering began DJing in 2001 and has become more widely known since he began as resident for London’s dominating daytime trance event, Edition. Jonnie more recently began DJing for Serious and has made an impression from the offset with his driving, uplifting trance sets. With his energetic presence behind the decks, Jonnie has a reputation for turning the crowd on and has been known to drag the most sceptical clubbers onto the dance floor. He has recently been billed with DJs such as Matt Hardwick, Judge Jules, JFK, Simon Patterson, Pulser and Mike Koglin at various nights across the South East and is definitely one to watch out for in the future. When did you start playing? December 2001 is when I got my first decks. My first gig in a club was my engagement party in October 2002. In true Pickering style we had a trance room and a house room. My first public club night appearance was Edition, March 2004. What’s the most scary gig you’ve every played at? Urm… that's a tough one… I don't think there have been any? I thoroughly look forward to every gig I play, always have. I’ve never played a gig in front of scary people, a couple of gigs with terrible sound equipment, though. I played one recently — it was the first time without any monitors at all! Had to beat match by the club system and then align using headphones. It was OK in the end, but not what I was used to. What did you think about the night last night — and the Serious crowd? Wicked! It’s one of the most enjoyable gigs I've played. There's nothing like playing in a club when you have so much support around you. Everything about it was wicked — except the mixer was down around my ankles, but you can't have everything right!!? When and where can we next see you play? Edition, October 1st @ Meet in Farringdon is my next booking. What’s your favourite place in Ibiza that’s not a club? Does Bora Bora beach count? What’s your favourite club in Ibiza? Amnesia — but then I don't have a lot of experience. Space is probably a cooler club, but Amnesia has the type of music I really love. They were the only two clubs I went to when I was there... What’s your favourite club other than Turnmills? The Cross would be my favourite. Aside from the wicked people, the club has a cool vibe going on. It’s got a nice decor and you can't argue with the courtyards. Fabric is a wicked club inside but I don't like the music there. Jonnie Pickering What’s one thing we wouldn't know about you? I love cars. If I could be anything in the world I wish I could be a formula1 driver! If I won Lotto, as soon as I was able I would go out and buy a Ferrari. Who you would most like to play back to back with? Well — aside from my obvious idols — PvD, Armin, Ferry and the likes, if I was to choose somebody to play B2B with tomorrow it would be my mate David J. He’s a quality DJ and a top man. What are your favourite DJs, styles and influences? My wife is a huge influence in my life, but musically — as above — PvD, Armin and I also rate Matt Hardwick very highly. Anthony Dean was a huge influence on me when I was starting out. He opened my eyes to playing music harmonically and it was all go from there. I love Tiesto's production work. There’s too many others to mention. What are some of the tracks you played last Thursday night that went down a treat? His radio show Sunday Comedown on RiseFm regularly attracts the best names in trance from established legends to up and coming future talent. (www.djviceroy.co.uk) When did you start playing? I started playing out in 2001 in Bristol, and have played all across London, Bristol, Birmingham and last year even ended up in Russia and the Ukraine playing out. What’s the most scary gig you’ve every played at? My most scary gig was playing in the Ukraine last year to 2,500 people when earlier in the day the promoter told me the club was small and there weren’t going to be many people there. To make it worse a Ukrainian music channel decided to turn up and film my set as well!!! What did you think about Thursday night and the Serious crowd? I thought the night was great, the back room providing as ever the perfect backdrop for a night of quality no-holds barred trance. The DJ line up was strong with warm up rising stars Will B from trance.nu and Monster and Mike Foyle whose productions are being played by the likes of Armin and Paul van Dyk. The Serious crowd added some energy into the proceedings as well as bringing two very talented DJs. It was a pleasure to have them for the night that was for sure!!! When can we next see you play? My next gigs going to be 20th October with Vaccine plus of course my monthly radio show on risefm.com, on the 2nd Sunday of each month, the next one on Aug 14th has guest mixes from Custard from Boundless, Ehren Stowers from Trance Generation and Max Graham. What’s your favourite club in Ibiza? I haven’t been to Ibiza yet. I’m still only 19 so got a long way to go I suppose. What’s your favourite club other than Turnmills? This is a hard one, I do like the opera house in Bournemouth but I still love the whole vibe of Turnmills that you just can’t get anywhere else. What’s one thing we don’t know about you? I am currently studying for a politics degree. Who would I most like to play back to back with? Uummmm, M.I.K.E aka Push would be good fun, but I do like playing B2b with Ben Beaton the other Vaccine resident, it’s always guaranteed to be a messy one!!! What are your favourite DJs, styles and influences? Well in terms of DJs defo Mike aka Push, Gabriel and Dresden, Judge Jules, and for styles anything from prog, house, trance or anything that feeds into the sound I like to play out. Being a resident means being able to play the right tunes at the right time whatever set at whatever time whether it be the prog. warm up or the banging last set. I like to be prepared for all styles! What are some of the tunes you played last night? It was last night when I mistakenly on the door asked Simon Patterson if he was here for either Vaccine vs Serious or the Gallery DJ competition that was going on next door. He replied saying he would play both, leaving me both confused and embarrassed LOL!!!! And the funniest end of the night sight? Hmmm so many to choose from, the most recent was coming back at 8am from the Gallery to make sure I was ready for a piece of furniture to arrive. The last thing of my night was this desk being delivered at my flat with me having been awake all night, smelling and looking of a club. The delivery guys just laughed at me!
