Luca Bacchetti – Tracks of My Time (interview)

Reported by News Editor / Submitted 07-07-14 12:09

Building his reputation off a slew of top quality underground house releases on labels including Josh Wink’s Ovum Recordings, Damian Lazarus’s Crosstown Rebels and Simon Dunmore’s Defected Records, Luca Bacchetti nowadays tours the world relentlessly, in between releasing a relentless flow of always interesting underground club cuts.

While his new EP Ovo includes a typically rocking yet melancholic house tune called The Space Between Us, title track Ovo is an experimental downtempo ambient soundscape more akin to Speedy J or 70s era-Tangerine Dream, reflecting his eclectic tastes and willingness to experiment. An attitude that shines through on the tracks that have inspired the nowadays Barcelona based Italian tech-house producer’s life and career. (http://www.lucabacchetti.com )

Skrufff (Jonty Skrufff): Your all-time favourite club track?

Luca Bacchetti: “For a long time it was “The Man With The Red Face” by Laurent Garnier. More recently I’d have to say Mirko Loko “Love Harmonic” (Carl Craig Remix) has become one of my classics and a point of reference in the studio for how it plays. Exceptional work.”

Skrufff: The track you've finished a set with the most often?

Luca Bacchetti: “There isn’t a special track, every time it’s different. Anybody who knows me well knows to expect anything; but only if I’m feeling easy in a club with a particularly receptive audience.”

Skrufff: The track you cleared the floor with (what happened when?)

Luca Bacchetti: “I could do it anytime you want, but never actually have. Whenever I put something different on I choose the moment carefully. There are other ways for me to show off my more eclectic side. After-parties should get back to their original meaning and be a time for experimentation. In that context to empty the dance floor you’d have to play whatever was filling it in the main show. So it’s hard to pick a single track, as you can see it’s all very subjective.”

Skrufff: The track you rescued a floor/ dancefloor with?

Luca Bacchetti: “Luckily, mostly my own productions, it’s not predetermined: I’m very instinctual! When in doubt a Latin bass and groove usually gets people going.”

Skrufff: The cheesiest/ guiltiest secret track you love?

Luca Bacchetti: “For me any tune, whether pop or EDM, can escape being cheesy as long as it is done well. Like, for example, when Sven Vath was singing “Electric Salsa” under the guise of OFF, that was really crass but at the same time really fun. So if something’s fun I’m OK with it anyhow.”

Skrufff: The track that you loved that everyone else hated?

Luca Bacchetti: “This is tough to answer, I’m not sure what to say, especially as far as house/techno is concerned. With rock it’d probably be some Red Hot Chili Peppers tune.”

Skrufff: The track that everyone else loved that you hated?

Luca Bacchetti: “I’m a huge fan of Stevie Wonder, but I really hate “Happy Birthday” … I just can’t listen to it, and when I hear it at parties I have to leave the room!”

Skrufff: Anything you'd like plugging (releases/ upcoming gigs/ radio shows etc?

Luca Bacchetti: “The new EP “OVO” is just out on ENDLESS, soon a remix for Livio & Roby will be released on ViVa Music, I’m just finishing off an EP for Supernature which will also include a remix for Audiofly. I’ll be in the USA, Mexico and South America until August, after which I’ll be back for some gigs in Ibiza.”
