Defiance & Revolution: Dejavoo Explain All!

Not a weekend goes by without the name Dejavoo appearing on line-ups and rocking psychedelic dance-floors all over the world with a relentless schedule most artists can only dream about. With the success of two artist albums already behind them on Transient Records, Future Shock & The Remixes, and the third, Defiance, out now on YSE Records they leave a feeling of certainty and familiarity but much like the phenomenon we are unable to assign full conscious perception. So is this precognition? Prophecy? Or just a simple case of an anomaly in memory recall? For the first time, we dig deep into Dejavoo to expel the myths and sort fact from fiction!
Hi Guys, thank you for taking the time out of what must be an insanely busy part of the year for you right now! To get to the bottom of anything you need start at the very beginning so who are Dejavoo? Where are you from? How did all start?
Both: Dejavoo are Francesco Mura and Kristian Vinales
Francesco: I am from Sardinia Italy; I started my musical adventure in 2001-2002 as a DJ and a few years later got into Music Production
Kristian vinales: From Gibraltar. For me Psy trance started in tyssen street and the Fridge in 96 but have been into dance music scene since 93. I started DJing in 2000.
You are both busy with different projects could you tell us more about it? How does it differ from Dejavoo?
Francesco: Well apart from Dejavoo I am constantly working on my solo project "Plastic Vibe", last year my 1st solo album "Subliminal Broadcast" was released on YSE/Millennium records. It was quite challenging as being the main producer of Dejavoo didn't want to it to sound the same. So I had to explore different soundscapes and styles, the outcome was better than expected. We do often play Plastic Vibe tunes in Dejavoo sets and the response from the crowd and other DJs and producers has been amazing.
Kristian: Well i have the DJing as kristian which i am always busy with it and just a did a compilation for Dacru recs. Also i have now started to work with John 00 Flemming promoting his new psy agency, John asked me if i was interested and i have gone for it so you will be hearing more about that soon.
Your 3rd album "Defiance" has just been released on YSE/Millennium records, how does it differ from the previous two? Do you have a favourite track on the album?
Francesco: Well this album was written in a very short period of time, as we are both busy with different projects. Compared to the previous two albums, Defiance has a total different approach, much deeper and solid grooves, with less crossover to other styles and a more classic psychedelic structure. My favourite track is Trinity, which is the more experimental one of the album, started as a Plastic Vibe experimental track then with Kristian we did a quick edit to adapt it to the concept of the album.
kristian: Defience is more psy and deeper as an album, a more mature sound overall, the other albums were more varied in style with every two tracks hitting a different genre.
Defiance declares a Revolution is here, can you tell us if there is a deeper meaning to this and if yes, what the Revolution is?
Francesco: Defiance reflects our peaceful fight against evil of dictatorship through the underground subculture. On the artwork we pay respect to all those who have stood against the system and fought for freedom of expression and speech.
Kristian: Well the revolution is coming moniker was brought up by our label boss Bim as a gimmick to promote the album. But anyway the concept of the album artwork reflects the current world climate and features in the inside sleeve those who defied forces in power like the dali a lama or ghandi or musicians who put across their message in favour of the oppressed, like Bob Marley or Rage against the machine for example. There are also icons who revolutionised music or cinema like georgio moroder or stanley kubick and who have been also an inspiration to us both.
Could you tell us more about the bold artwork of your albums?
Francesco: Not a lot of people know that I do all physical side of the graphics on Dejavoo album covers, normally as for the music we sit and bring in a whole array of ideas and examples of what we want and then I try to give it a shape. Stopping for discussions and new ideas to think to point out etc.
Kristian: We had ideas and talked a lot of what we wanted. The idea for this was old soviet propaganda but with a positive message engraved in it, and what is a more a positive message to address than unjust issues that are or have been going on in the world (like tibet). I hope this starts a new trend of psy and dance artist addressing world and climate problems, something that rock musicians do more but dance/electronic artists lack.
The album has now been out for a few weeks and you have been showcasing the material for a few months prior hand, so far how has the response been?
Francesco: The response has been great and I think we have surprised few people with our new deep psychedelic sound
Kristian: Tracks have been going very well and we have received a lot of comments on our new sound, and many DJs requesting tracks to play. On the floor the response had been great as well and I have already seen a lot of interest from people who were not into our old sound.
So tell us which track from the album gets the most response from the dance floor
Kristian: I think that a variety of them really stand outs would be the long run, trinity, the Rinkadink remix we did and recycloned.
Francesco: For sure Trinity, The Long Run but also Defiance and Goahead.
With every album comes the need to share with others and as such we see a very busy schedule for Dejavoo throughout the summer and the remainder of the year. Can you let us know where we can find you?
Both: This summer we will be playing in Sweden for the first time and also will have a debut in Serbia (DJ set), as well as all the usual festivals in Germany (various German festivals, Germany been the biggest in Europe for festival as it has the biggest scene), Austria, Ireland, Holland, Poland with DJ sets in Turkey and Greece are all in the cards!
We are only a matter of days away from one of the UK’s flagship psy events, Halcyon of which you have been residents from the very beginning. Can you tell take us back in time and tell us how and when this happened for you?
Kristian: I knew Paul jack from before Halcyon started and loved the fact that paul wasn't only concerned in massive names and the usual line ups, he has a habit of choosing names he thinks are great music to his taste. Paul has done many events with interesting line ups even if he is taking a risk the guy is willing to go for something new and different. A perfect example been the party he did with ticon and son kite etc, a very unique line up for London.This aspect of him made it very easy for us to connect and share ideas and talk music. We had already played in his party proactive event so when Halcyon was born it been a psy trance event was the perfect platform for us.
Francesco: I believe what makes working with Paul and the Halcyon family such a nice experience is our common goal to deliver a great show.
With countless number of superb events from Halcyon covering a number of London’s finest venues such as the Matter/Proud2, Ewer Street Car Park, The Corenet and now of course the latest rebirth on one of the most historic EDM venues in the world, Electric Brixton, can you share with us some of your personal favorite moments and whether any of the venues keep a special place in your heart?
Francesco and Kristian: One that stands out a lot was one of the early ones at matter we where first live act on at 1am and first on stage after a few DJs. So the curtain was up on the stage and we where behind. When the music from the DJ box stopped and the curtain lifted we played our first beat the crowd went wild, the place was heaving so it was the perfect senario for us and we had a lot of good feedback after that gig.
Looking back at all the artists who have stepped upon the stage for Halcyon, which have been your stand out performances?
Francesco: I always enjoy more the not so psy-performers as they tend to experiment more and play stuff you can't normally hear in a typical psy trance night. The one that I remember most for its 'being different' has to be the Eskimo gig. Also I always enjoy Tim Healy. And Resident wise Libra9 and Matt Loraine for their outstanding skills.
Kristian: The best for me offering something different and new where Ticon and Tim Healy. As for residents they are always great especially, Libra 9 and Matt Loraine with their great technical ability.
I think that just about wraps it up and we will see you on the dance-floor this Saturday @ Electric Brixton!
