Machines that run on body heat

The human body at rest radiates 100 watts of heat—heat that does nothing other than make crowded rooms stuffy. But body heat can be converted to electricity, and new technology is always improving the process. With the rise of wearables, the body heat-powered device becomes an ever more tantalising promise.

The machines will be using us as batteries in no time. a la Matrix..

Scientists Say They've Created Artificial Blood for Humans

Somebody ring the bell at the blood factory, because it's almost time to get those assembly lines running. Almost. A team of British scientists say they've created red blood cells suitable for transfusion into humans, a breakthrough that could change the lives of millions—if it works.

Genomic sequencing

With the power of computing increasing as it is, yet becoming more affordable what would have taken weeks even 10 years ago is now taking days.

It's predicted that the genomic sequencer will become standard equipment for medical services in the near future, the possible ramifications for which are wide reaching and something I find quite interesting.

Imagine if you will a world where insurance policies are assigned or denied based on a number of genetic parameters. For example you could find yourself denied life insurance on the basis that you're likely to develop a certain disease during your lifetime.

I believe this is what's causing concern with NHS medical records being made available, albeit in an anonymised format, but apparently the insurance companies may be able to identify individuals in low density populations.

Worrying stuff if insurance companies could demand a genetic test, although they used to deny cover to anyone who had requested an HIV test which seemed pretty stupid.

The smartphone powered EEG

Most people use only a fraction of the functionality and power of their smartphones, which have a larger global customer base than the traditional computer particularly in developing countries.

As modern smartphones are comparable in performance to desktop PCs from a few years back, why wouldn't you harness their power in order to bring medical services to areas that otherwise wouldn't have access to them.

The Internet of Things

Think of a world where many objects have integrated sensors and wireless data transmission functionality in order to improve your quality of life.

For example, the bathroom of the future may well have sensors built into your mirror and toilet. These sensors will analyse your excretions and composition of your breath in order to determine whether you're low on certain minerals / nutrients or in the process of developing a medical condition (it's now proven that it's possible to detect certain types of cancer from a patients breath). This data could then potentially be sent to your GP in real-time in order for them to take appropriate action.
