On a Journey with The Man Who Sold the Time: interview with Jay OM

Reported by Tara / Submitted 02-03-09 07:54

The best music should always take you on a journey: ideally mental, spiritual and — if you’re lucky enough to get out on the dancefloor every weekend — physical. Jay OM is one of the few ambitious artists who has deliberately embarked on a mission to explore such a challenge under his Journey guise. And his debut album The Man Who Sold the Time is testament to this goal: an inspiring odyssey of psy-infused basslines and gorgeous proggy riffs mixed with adventurous samples. In short, this is more than a journey, it’s a voyage of the mind, body and soul. With Jay back in London after another mammoth tour of Brazil, he’s showcasing his album at Cohesion at Brixton’s Club 414 this Saturday night then at One Tribe presents SunDance at The Dome next Saturday 14 March. We jumped on our magic carpet for a sojourn with the man himself…

You’ve been around the London scene for a good few years now. What first got you into making music?
I first got into producing music in 2003 to improve my knowledge. I was bored with the music I was playing and couldn’t find anything I liked anymore. I went to college at Islington Music Workshop (IMW), which is very famous in the underground scene. Past pupils include the likes of Aphid Moon, Chris Organic and a lot of other people who produced psy trance. But I first really started producing when I bought a computer and a midi controller and tried to find out what was going on in this world called music.

But you’d been DJ’ing for a few years before then hadn’t you?
Yes I originally started DJ’ing for fun and bought turntables in ’98. The first time my name was on a flyer was in ’99. I was playing a very different style then — trance, German stuff. It was slower than UK hard dance or trance: stuff like Scott Project and DJ Crow. Not so slow but very deep, ‘phatt’ as they say, with big bass and kicks and with no dispersions of high frequencies. But even then I always got into psy trance and went to psy parties. I’d always been buying vinyl too.
I made the total swap to psy from trance in 2002. I just said, ‘I prefer this music’ and felt more complete.

You have another project called Star~Trip. How is the Star ~ Trip sound different to your solo project Journey?
Journey has more sweeps, rock percussions and way more synths to create a big kind of different sound. Star Trip is faster and more melodic. Anton [Evil Twins] the other half of Star~Trip currently doing a masters in classical guitar at the Royal School of London. He’s a very talented musician and his synths are very good. He’s good with buttons, riffs and melodies and that makes the difference.

You’ve been working a lot over the last couple of years, touring and in the studio. How do you still manage to produce and run Free Spirit Records when you’re on the road so much?
Yes I’ve been working a lot lately. I’ve been making music for five years and it’s been a long journey so far. But time has gone fast and there’s been an evolution in my sound. I’ve achieved my style: you can now recognise that one of tracks comes from me. I’m still working hard and trying to improve all the time. 2008 was a very very productive year with lots of releases and I was very happy to end it with this album. I’d been out of the studio a very long time though. From the end of November 2007 until now there’s been 5 and half months touring as well as gigs, the studio and of course the label takes up a lot of time. I’m always multi-tasking, but I’m learning to delegate and am lucky to have a few people that help me out with label bits.

It must be nice to be one of the lucky few who can make a living making music though?
I don’t see the business of psy trance as ‘making money’ in that way. I’m always just making a living. But I’ve got more gigs than I used to have and seem to be getting busier and busier and busier. Definitely no complaints so far!

How did you first start Free Spirit Records? What’s the ethos behind it?
There’s been a gradual evolution. It was originally born as a party that Mad Theo and I did five years ago. I liked the name and it flowed from there. Soon thereafter I met my wife Bridget, I’d just finished College and wanted to make music. I thought an artist had to be pushed and had an idea for a DJ and production agency. So we went on with the Free Spirit name and it went very well. We started working with loads of great DJs and artists from different labels. It’s good to keep up in contact with different labels, but it takes time. Now the Free Spirit sound is improving and the people surrounding me are growing.

Originally I wanted to do a compilation, so I thought the natural evolution would be to start a record label. In 2005 I started working on that first compilation and here we are. That first compilation came out in 2006, ‘Brahmaputra’, our first release. After that there was Free Spirit Volume 2, ‘Eupsychia’, then the first FS Records album by M-Klome, ‘Interruptions’ and then Free Spirit Volume 3, ‘Neophilia’. Now there’s the new Journey album and also the new compilation, Free Spirit Volume 4, compiled by Marchello.

In Spring 2009 there’s going to be other albums coming out on Free-Spirit. We’ve signed lots of new artists in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, France, Italy and of course England. There’s a lot of different nationalities. Two are working on albums: one from Chile, Ital and the other is Twenty Eight, who are DJ Shove and Pedrao; we’ve also recently signed Kronic, who was on Mandala Records before; and also Mental Broadcast. We’ve set up a lot of new label DJs in different places.

This must also help your own DJ’ing a lot…
Well the gigs come for me, they don’t come because of Free Spirit but for Jay OM through Journey. Most people don’t even know I’m label manager of FS Records! I have my own style, which some people like.

Who would you class as your main musical influences?
Psy rock bands from the past: the ’60s and ’70s, for some parts of my sound. If you’re talking about my psy trance production there’s now a lot of influence from the people I work with in the studio. If their music is groovy then I like it! DJs include Oberon, a cool DJ who’s old school big time! There are some very cool psy trance DJs and Marcello is one of them. Music wise I’d have to say M-Theory, Zen Mechanics, Dickster and Aphid Moon. I like producers who you can recognise, who are doing music that you can recognise as their track. Also M-Klome, who’s now formed Tobasco with Bujo and they’re setting up studio.

There’s quite a wee psy trance community going on in North London isn’t there?
Well I spend a long time in the studio, especially with M-Theory, Rob and Marcello, who’re not far from here [Turnpike Lane].

What goals do you have for the future?
To keep Free Spirit going the way we’re doing, opening doors and scouting. Listening to new sounds, new original sounds. So far I’ve been very very lucky. I’ve founds lots of people and nice music. And of course to still be releasing.

Where would you still like to play?
There’s still a lot of places I’ve never been. I’ve got a very nice feel about Rainbow Serpent. After all my South American experiences, I haven’t finished yet. I still want to carry on and make people happy. Love to see people happy and love to be on stage!

You’ve just released the awesome ‘The Man Who Sold the Time’, your first album. How long have you been working on it?
Since I came back from Brazil in January 2008 I started making my own album. I got back in the studio straight away and worked on it for the rest of the year . I did 10 tracks for the album; two tracks for the Free-Spirit volume 3 compilation; another track for Revolve Magazine; and another on Antu Records (Chile) as I’m part of that record label too. As well as being a guest, they release my music. I’ve got another track coming out on Mutagen Records, run by DJ Mif. There’s also a compilation by Digoa for Alchemy coming out soon and another one on Marcello’s new compilation, Free Spirit volume 4. I finally got to the point in December where I’d released everything I’d been doing, so it was time to go on tour!

What was the inspiration behind the album?
I wanted to do a journey. Going to Latin America and listening to music at Universo Parallelo and travelling around Brazil, I started listening to different sounds. It made me feel ready to prepare a journey of music. So there’s definitely a musical journey on the album and it’s all produced by me in my Journey style. But there’s also different styles. It starts from atmospheric to progressive or rhythmic, then goes deeper with the psychedelic — and then more funky. There’s a definite uplifting feeling at the end with more morning melodies. The album ends with a track called ‘Isolator’ at 128 bpm, which is definitely more progressive.
The main influences are travelling and discovering things. In Britain I’ve discovered many things, for example, minimal techno parties, listening to different things. Before I couldn’t understand how people could be at a party and listen to ‘ting ting ting’ for 10 hours! But I’ve learned there’s some good things in minimal. ‘Isolator’ comes from a very isolating situation at Boom Festival last time. When travelling I always take notes and my titles come from those notes and the situations that have happened to me. I always give a track its name first, such as ‘The Barber of Gokharn’.

I love the artwork on the album!
Yes it’s by Alexandro (psyale@hotmail.com). I wanted something different from the other Free Spirit graphics. I’ve done all the graphics for the other Free Spirit releases as I’m a graphic designer, it’s what I did before, so I did the logos. I was working in a company before I came here and ended up wearing a tie and a jacket for Monday meetings! It was one of the reasons I left Milan, I was bored.
I came to live here in ’98 and went to live in Dalston Lane. People who were around London at that time might recognize that name as Tyson Street was right next door! There were two bouncers from Tyson Street living there and they invited me. That’s how I got into the psy scene!

So you went to no psy parties before then?
No. But there’s good ones in Italy now. I’ve just played at a good one in Milan. I didn’t know they did parties that big there! It was near where I grew up so I expected 200¬-300 people. I got there and there was 3000! It was a very big warehouse, Leoncavallo, and there’s a story behind it. It’s an important landmark for the Italian underground scene. It was a very big party with 5 rooms, including techno with Geezer live and Aaron Liberator playing, like a Technoworld room at SeOne! Leoncavallo started in ’78 like a legal squat, two guys Iaio and Fausto got killed by the Mafia because they were trying to get the heroin delaers out of the area, so this social centre was created in memory of them.

Anyways, back to album. Are there any collaborations or did you do all the tracks yourself?
Yes there’s some collaborations. ‘Night Sessions’ was done in Sao Paulo in three night sessions by me and M-Theory and another guy, Orgapulse. I did ‘Devaneio’ with Mental Broadcast and ‘2012’ was also with M-Theory.
‘The Man Who Sold The Time’ was the first track I did when I got back from Brazil last year. It’s pumping, energetic, atmospheric.
‘Spirito libero’ means ‘free spirit’. The lyrics are from my wife Bridget. [‘They’re not lyrics’, she says. ‘It’s me talking!’]
With ‘Change’ there is a change as it has a different composition from the tracks I’d been doing before then. It’s different because there’s different bass from four channels — four different basslines! It’s a very pumping track.
‘Madness tincture’ has a mad structure!
‘The Barber of Gokharn’ is from when we went travelling for two months in India on our second honeymoon. I hadn’t seen my face for 6-7 weeks. We arrived in Gokharn and it was the first time I’d seen my face in the mirror. When I saw this funny thing I put in my scrap book ‘The Barber of Gokharn’. I'd been talking with Bridget and Bruce who we were travelling with. The people who surround me give me ideas and the inspiration to do a track.
‘Ratified’ is from the Italian comic ‘Dylan Dog’. Even though it’s an Italian comic, he lives in London and is an investigator. There’s a psychedelic metaphor as there’s a lot of strange things.
As I mentioned, ‘Isolator’ is from Boom. A very atmospheric track that goes deeper into funky psychedelic. It ends on a calming note, because it’s the end of the Journey.
And of course there’s ‘2012’ with M-Theory. It was originally 20 + 1 + 2 but we realised people couldn’t say or hear that! It’s not very easy to say! There’s a sample from the movie 23, but then the end of the world is 2012! It’s a groovy funky track.

You’ve just returned from another tour of Brazil. What were the highlights of your time away?
Yes I’ve just came back from a 2 and half month album tour in Brazil. Highlights: headlining the party in Brasilia on Christmas morning was a cool experience, it was a big boom just before going to Bahia to play at Universo Paralello 9. Also a gig in Sao Paulo at the Club A was a good one. The promoter changed my flights to make it happen, nice one. Anyway, anytime and everywhere I played I enjoyed it big time. The tour in Brazil was also a big boost for the future. As a consequence I’ve been booked for another 3 tours, one in April, one in July and one in September... and an open door for December @Universo Paralello 10.

In Brazil you played at the awesome Universo Parallelo festival, which lasts for a week. How did your set there go and what crazy festival behaviour did you see on your journey?
Universo Paralello is one of the best festivals in the world and playing on the main stage was one of the best experiences of my career so far. I played the 30 December at midday to a huge crowd — 12000 people were inside the festival by that time… I started my live set with the first track from my album The Man Who Sold The Time and then I just travelled with the dance floor. I worked my live set out thinking of creating different situations, from atmospheric to rolling, from rolling to psychedelic, from psy to groovy, from groovy to bouncy, finishing with the track ‘2012’. It was unbelievable seeing the crowd reacting in the way I was looking for. People were happy, jumpy, smiling, grooving, travelling, spacing out, and with my phat basslines and intricate melodies I saw everything merging all together.
Here some links to view what happened in there:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC0VGSnQqyk
www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0_FnF81Wuc

As for crazy behaviour, plenty! Brazil is an incredibly colourful place and they LOVE to party!

What gigs do you have coming up in the next couple of months?
Well I’ve just played in Milan, Italy, again @Leonkavallo as Journey Live, Star~Trip Live (which is my other project in collaboration with Evil Twins) and Jay OM DJ set, all alongside Eat Static. I will perform in festivals in Europe and in America Latina…some of them still TBC, so I can’t mention them yet.
28.02 @Leonkavallo, Milan, Italy - (Star~Trip & Journey Live, Jay OM DJ Set)
07.03 @Cohesion, London - (Journey Live, Jay OM DJ Set)
14.03 @One Tribe, London - (Journey Live)
10.04 @Respect, Sao Paulo – Brasil - (Journey Live)
17.04 @Club A, Sao Paulo – Brasil - (Journey Live)
18.04 @Ecologic, Victoria, Brasil - (Journey Live, Jay OM DJ Set)
23.05 @Psy Invasion, London - (Journey Live)
17.07 @Club A, Sao Paulo - (Journey Live, Jay OM DJ Set)
22 to 27 July @Fora Do Tempo Festival - Carolina - Ma - Brasil - (Journey Live, Jay OM DJ Set)
31 July to 3 August @Sonica Reloaded Festival – Rome, Italy - (Journey Live)

What productions do you have in the pipeline?
Well… I had some time out of studio during the recent tour which gave me the time to listen to what I have done till now and to what is actually fresh around the scene. I’m very happy with my first album and see it as a kind of first sculpture… that is the way I see my music. I imagine myself as an artist making sculptures… so far I have made a few sculptures and the more I make the more the details will be fine and smooth! But for me the production is not the only important thing, the people must like it and understand it… and it is superb when you can see that they do. So lots of new music is in the pipeline.

You're playing at Cohesion at Brixton's Club 414 on Saturday 7 March. What can we expect from your set? Why should those who don't know you reading this come and check it out?

JOURNEY aka Jay OM / JOURNEY aka Jay OM

is Jay OM, born in Italy now residing in London, his earliest psychedelic-rock influences were forged playing guitar in local bars in Milan. His romance with the decks beginning in the late 80's whilst working for a local radio station where he was given the opportunity to spin his first record. This love firmly in place the move to London followed in 1998. In 1999 he started djing professionally and since then has been rocking the crowds at many of the biggest venues in London as well as outdoor parties in the UK, Europe and festivals in Brasil like Universo Paralello and Fora do Tempo.

In 2003 he studied Sound Engineering and Music Technology and began a solo production project under the name Journey, and another in collaboration with Anton Petrov as Star~Trip.

In 2004, he conceived the vision of a network of like-minded artists in the psy-trance and ambient genres, all working to promote themselves and each other under one banner. Thus the Free-Spirit label was born... originally intended to focus on artist management, the label's skyrocketing success combined with the enthusiasm of Jay, the artists, and fans enabled Free-Spirit to outgrow its horizons.

Free-Spirit continues to build a collective of artists and DJ’s from the UK, Europe and worldwide, aiming to create and provide access to a combined set of resources not available to them as individuals, making it just a little easier for all to concentrate on what they truly love, which is the music! Brahamaputra, the debut release for Free-Spirit Records compiled by Jay OM, hit the shops in October 2006, featuring both a Journey and a Star~Trip track amongst others and in June 2007 both Journey and Star~Trip released on the second Free-Spirit compilation V/A Free-Spirit Vol.2 "Eupsychia".

Collaborations with other artists have given a big kick to Journey’s recent production, evolving his sound into a more groovy psychedelic beat with his original touch. Journey is currently working on his solo album which will be released on Free-Spirit Records in October 2008.

Today, Jay's reputation as an active, involved, and hard working individual in the global trance circuit precedes him. His commitment and enthusiasm for trance music has left an indelible impression on the world scene already, and Jay's future has never looked brighter, from his burgeoningly successful record label to his organized events in the UK to his upcoming solo release. Jay works tirelessly at his art and trade and the music he brings to the masses exemplifies the fruits of his labour and energy.

SINEWAVE SINEWAVE SINEWAVE SINEWAVE

For over 10 years he has been part of the thriving electronic music scene both in Australia and the UK. With a history as a guitar and keyboard player his real passion for electronic music was ignited in 1994 when he hosted his own radio show 'Liquid Sky Dreaming' for three years which featured some of the most cutting edge Electro, Metal, Industrial and Techno music of the time. It was here where he heard for the first time some of the pioneering Trance music that ultimately has shaped and influenced his style of production.
After showcasing his talents as an Alchemy Records label DJ, he started his own project under the name SINEWAVE and since then he has toured all over the world and impressed dance floors with the powerful and uplifting style of music in his live sets. He has DJ'd and performed live extensively in the UK, USA, Brazil, Australia, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Lithuania, Denmark, Czech Republic, Sweden and India.
He has performed at the legendary Burning Man Festival in the US, the amazing Universo Parallelo festival in Brazil and the famous Rainbow Serpent Festival in Australia.
'A legend in the making his sets take you on a journey into the unexplored side of your brain. Each track teases and torments every molecule and your body begins to enjoy this new experiment. Grab your psychedelic boogie board and set out to surf the SINEWAVE!'
