From Russia With Love - Graham Gold Interviews Bobina

Mother Russia has produced untold treasures - the Cold War, vodka that could strip paint at ten paces, stunning women/mail-order brides and now trance sensation Bobina. Here in the UK we've made several outstanding contributions to society ourselves - Margaret Thatcher, warm beer, Pete Doherty and of course the one and only Graham Gold.
In his quest to bring the very best in global music to the UK, Graham has always been the man to introduce London's clubbing scene to some of the most mind-blowing new talent from outside of the country. Abel Ramos, Ferry Corsten, Armin and Aly & Fila have all been notable Peach debuts. Now Graham delivers another corker in the shape of Bobina, a young Russian who's rightfully being hailed as the next big thing and who will be gracing the legendary decks of Heaven, London on Friday July 27th.
To get you in the mood for what promises to be an absolute corker of a night, Graham sat down with Bobina to catch up on what's happening in the mother country and find out the story behind his DJ career so far, his plans for production domination, the state of Russian clubbing and his opinion on Russian hookers. We kid you not. Only from the mouth of Graham Gold...
Bobina I know is not your real name (which is very Russian to the point of scary!!). How did you come about it and does it have a meaning?
My real name is Dimitry Almazov. A long time ago I was speaking to my friend on the Internet and at that time I had just started to produce and wanted to make a remix of old Russian song about space. So I asked him for advice where to get an acapella but he told me that it wasn’t possible as the record had been produced ages ago and voice was recorded to Bobinas! The Bobinas is a big cassette which was used a long time ago for recording, (you can see it on my logo)! Hmm… Bobina, nice name I thought!
Obviously a lot has changed since communism ended, but the clubbing scene hasn’t taken a long time to emerge. I have been reading for some time how hedonistic the parties are in Moscow, though sadly have yet to experience that first hand (my own previous trips have been to Murmansk with gorgeous fully naked girls dancing on stage!!) Is this true – are they REALLY that good?
Yes it’s true. Usually people are surprised in a good way when they come to Russia (especially to Moscow or St. Petersburg). They all expect to come to a village and after all they come to a very modern city. For example last weekend I played at Castle Dance, I met Johan Gielen there and he told me that he really like the event, it was even better than Trance Energy in his opinion! In the summertime there are really a lot of big and cool parties in mother Russia.
Where do you think the Russian clubbers get all their information about DJs and what’s happening on the scene from?
I think its the same everywhere nowadays, basically the internet. We have it in Russia as well!
Was it a thrill for you to have Sean Tyas remix your last single - how did that track come about?
Well it was a pretty fast decision. We were talking on the internet and I showed him the radio version of Lighthous. He said it was great and he could turn it into a more driving trance record. And he did it. I like the original, but as a radio record. The Sean Tyas remix is really a club record.
Is a typical weekend for you playing across Russia or do you get to travel out of the country much?
In Russia I usually have one to two gigs every weekend yes. But it’s interesting for me, I like it. In Europe I usually play one gig per month.
DJ Phonar is looking like he could be another big export from the Federation. Who else should we looking out for?
Vladimir (DJ Phonar) has been a DJ for 20 years now. He's been really big in Russia for 10 years already I think. In my opinion it’s great that the biggest DJ in Russia plays trance. Many people in the UK have probably never heard of him because he doesn’t produce music. But he's still good DJ in my opinion.
As Russia is by far the biggest country in the world (you can fit Australia into Russia four times!) what is the scene like outside of the capital? Some of the places look like they are in the middle of nowhere! What’s the internal travel system like?
Oh good question. Russia is really big yes; it can take you eight hours to fly from Moscow to Khabarovsk! The dance music is pretty popular everywhere in Russia nowadays. Especially electro and house, but there are a lot of good clubs and a lot of party people.
You are obviously totally geared up for snow and stuff, but have you ever had times when flights have been cancelled because of the weather? (I ask this question as once when I was flying out of Newcastle in one of our English winters, despite 3 weeks notice that bad weather was on the way, they still ran out of de-icer for the wings!
No I never had such experience. Sometimes flights here can be delayed yes, but cancelled, I have never seen something like this.
Why are the best hookers I ever had Russian?!
I'm Russian – that’s why it’s difficult for me to answer this question!
Is it an expensive country to live? Or are the prices of mac’s / pc’s and software relevant to income?
Moscow is really expensive yes, but you know its always different; some things in Moscow (like Coca Cola for example) are much more cheaper than in Europe / USA / UK.
What’s the cost of an average apartment to rent / buy in Moscow? I have been there once for a 12 hour stop over. We went into the residential areas and I never saw houses, only blocks of flats.
Rent, I'm not sure as I never did this. But hotels here are expensive. Buy? I've heard Moscow became the most expensive city in the world last year and prices for apartment are really crazy expensive. In some areas of Moscow it costs more than US$40000 per square metre! Now please try to imagine how much it costs to buy a standard flat (around 100 square meters!).
What year did the whole clubbing scene kick off there and do you consider you are behind other countries in the way the scene is evolving?
I have no idea when honestly. I've not been interested in club music for a long time, only from 2001 I think. Before I liked rock music (and I still like it!).
What’s the Russian annual consumption of Vodka?
Haha. Some people drink everyday, it’s true. But I'm sure in the UK there are a lot of people who drink everyday as well. Also sure some people can drink one bottle everyday, so that will be 365 bottles per year, maybe even more! But honestly it’s a fairy tale about Vodka in Russia. In every country people do this but the thing is in Russia we have much more good vodka than in Europe that’s for sure. That’s why it does less damage for your health to drink it in Russia!
What is next planned for you in the studio? Do you have your own or do you work with engineers?
My studio is in my apartment, music is basically a hobby for me, that’s why usually I have no plans. I just produce by myself when I like. Sometimes it can be few days in a row, sometimes one day in a week. For example now I'm producing a new song for my next artist album but don’t ask me as I have no idea when it will be released, just when I’m 100% happy with it. It won’t be a trance album for sure; now I prefer to produce songs, like Lighthouse for example. Some still call it trance, after it became the most broadcasted Russian dance song on Russian FM stations in 2006 some now call it dance pop but I don’t care to be honest. I just do the arrangement like I feel and it makes no difference for me what style it is.
Peach will be your very first gig in the U.K. What are expecting from it, and are you nervous when you think that we have had Ferry, Armin, Tiesto and Oakenfold all play for us?
Yes I'm a bit nervous to be honest. The UK is the centre of the world's dance music, that’s why its almost impossible to surprise people in the UK I guess. But I'm sure all will be fine and I'll calm down after the beginning of my set (it always happens with me when I play for the first time in a different country).

After an absolutely smash return to Heaven last month, London’s most iconic night returns on Friday July 27th with the full intention of repeating its success all over again.
Peach, one of the biggest legends in recent clubbing history, exploded back onto the scene in May. The faithful and those newly acquainted have been far from disappointed with the list of DJs paraded in front of them for their dance floor pleasure.

John ‘00’ Fleming draws crowds of thousands whether he’s playing in South America, North America, Asia or in Europe. He flies in for this exclusive UK gig with some of the most deliciously twisted psy-trance and tech-trance music money can buy.
Joining him on the main stage is Thomas Bronzwaer. A favourite of Paul Van Dyk, Armin, Eddie Halliwell and Sander Van Doorn to mention but a few, his latest track Constellation has been causing tidal waves throughout the trance community and there are hundreds, if not thousands of UK fans who will be begging for the chance to see this hot to trot new generation producer in all his glory.
