Anton Maiko is a renowned and well-respected veteran producer and artist of the Progressive Psy-trance scene for decades now, both under his previous alias Mindwave and his newer pseudonym SOME1. Having worked tirelessly and passionately on his latest album Voyager, we thought it was the right time for a sit down and catch up – ahead of this special release in February 2023 on home label Iono-Music!

Hi Anton! The last time I interviewed you was back in November 2020, when we were in the middle of a pandemic. Thankfully things have eased since then and life has mostly gotten back on track. How have you been since we last chatted? What has changed for you, and what has remained a constant?

Wow, so many things happened since then. The major event was the birth of my second son “Lenny” Smile I moved my studio to a new place, got some new synths and created my second studio album. I also started to play more domestic gigs, something that I didn’t really do before, and now I really like it. It’s closer to home after all haha, and I do love the homeland crowd.

The last time we spoke you were enjoying family time, and you mentioned your son was enjoying playing with the sounds in your studio. How are your family and is your son crafting his studio skills? ;-)

Yes, my has family grown haha! The kids love to come into my studio to tweak the synths and to play with the buttons. Sometimes they even get some crazy sounds that I use in my production. I’m trying to teach my older son how to make music, but he is still not really into it properly yet. He prefers to just play with all the buttons haha.

How is your studio and production time going? Are you still standing up while you produce and is the Arturia Microbrute still one of you best pieces of equipment? Have you added to your studio at all since we last spoke?

Yes, I’m still standing haha even though I have a very comfy chair. I think the best way to feel the rhythm is through your legs, to move your body with the groove. I added some Behringer synths. I really love this sound as it’s a really nice replication of an old classic but costs less money. Of course it doesn’t sound 100% the same but it’s very close and gives that magical analog sound, that each time your turn it on, it never sounds the same so you must record it at that moment. You can tweak some crazy sounds – but you can’t save it and there are no presets so it makes the musical adventure more fun.

You are releasing your second album as SOME1 called ‘Voyager’ on Iono-Music in February 2023. Can you tell us about this creation. How long did it take? Was there a concept behind it? Any synths that you favoured during the making of it?

I started work on it couple of months after the release of the debut album “Delicate Vibrations” in 2020. I felt that I had more to “tell” and I wanted it to be special. With the new studio and the new synths, I started to craft it slowly and after almost 2 years it’s ready. The main concept of it is the voyage of our lives. Each one of us has a special journey with so many events. Good ones, bad ones, sad, happy, funny, loving, hateful times, and so many more. These events in our life build the person we are. We are Voyagers in this universe Smile I used lots of synths in this album, but I think the one that worked extra hours was the Behringer K2 that is a replica of the Korg MS20. In the track “Free” you can hear it a lot as it started as a jam session in the studio. It was recorded live without many edits in the end, so the track really flows and feels more natural, less “robotic”.

I have been lucky enough to hear your new album and it is bursting with stunning quality clean sounding productions. Did you teach yourself how to mix a track down? What are some of your favourite tools for this?

Yes, I worked a lot on the sound in this one. I learnt a lot during the production, and also the new studio sound is much better than the old one, so I can hear what I’m doing better now. I use a lot of the native tools that come with the Ableton DAW and my favourite tools bundle is by FabFilter.
It’s a must in every studio I think. They have amazing plugins with really modern GUI. I prefer to have less plugins and learn how to squeeze the most out of the one I really like. It’s also good for the computer as it has less to process, so is better for your workflow.

One of the tracks is titled ‘Sun Child’, was this about any one specific?

Well, it is a special story but not about my kids haha. It’s about an experience I had in one of my gigs. It was during the pandemic lock down. I was invited to play in the desert in a secret party. I drove about 3 hours to get there, the roads were empty as most people were at home. I arrived and I saw so many people dancing; it was surreal for those times. But the most special thing happened when amongst this huge crowd I spotted a woman holding a small baby that had sound proof headphones bigger than him haha; he was smiling and enjoying the party. He was like the “light” in that moment, a hope that this pandemic would end soon and we could get back to our lives.
It may not be the same as before but at least we can see our friends and family, and get back to the dance floors Smile

I personally love ‘Eye of Perception’ and ‘The Path’. Do you have a favourite track from the album?

Hmmm... I love all of them! I chose them very carefully and each of them gave me goosebumps while producing. I fully believe in them all and I hope people will enjoy them too.

I hear the unmistakable beautiful sound of the 303 in many of your productions. There are a few great imitation 303 synths now available like the Behringer TD-3. Which do you use and why?

Yep, it is the Behringer TD-3 haha! The nasty Acid monster. I have it in red now. The 303 acid sound is one of my favourites.; you hear it is so many tracks throughout the history of electronic music it’s hard not to love it!

When you play out, do you ever or did you ever experience stage fright? If so, how did you deal with this?

Every time I go on stage I have the fright. After all these years playing all over the world from small parties in pubs to huge commercial events. I still get it! It frightens me every single time. I think the moment that stops will be the time for me to quit as it will not be exciting anymore.

To deal with it, I just take off my glasses, and then I don’t see sh*t hahaha! I’m joking...
I just try not to think about what can go wrong and instead focus on enjoying the moment, together with the people on the dance floor.

Who are some of your favourite non-psychedelic artists?

Wow…there are so many. I think it depends on my mood. I can spend all week listening to Pink Floyd or some other classic rock band or listen to electronic stuff like Faithless, Prodigy...or some old school synths by Jean Michel Jarre or Vangelis.

What’s one of your biggest achievements in life?

I think that’s the music I leave behind me. It’s my contribution to the world, my signature that will pass on through generations. I feel there is nothing bigger than that.

What are you looking forward to most in 2023?

I hope people will like the new album and I hope to come back playing it all around the world with my SOME1 project. I wish to keep spreading my music to more and more ears in this universe and beyond (:

Lastly, if you were an animal, what would you be and why?

Hmmm...maybe a Wolf! I am very protective of my family; I will do anything for my pack!
