Same, I knew about him and his music, I had just never taken the time to listen to him properly. Mister Superstar is a great track about being loved too much, as you say, people would laud him more if his sound was more generic.

The last one I went to was a complete cringe. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
It would be as bad as seeing Linkin Park perform now, except they are much worse.
