On Parallel roads with Jurrane

Take a handful of energy. Add generous amounts of passion. Turn up the heat and serve boiling hot. And that ladies and gentlemen, is an unmistakable slice of trance from Jurrane. His real name is Jim Voute, he is originally from Holland and no stranger to the London scene. In only a few years, he has cemented his reputation as a top emerging DJ/producer with adrenalin-fuelled sets at some of London’s best club nights, and a string of fantastic tunes that’s been snapped up by major labels.
It’s time to work up your appetite, to dust off your dancing shoes and prepare yourself for a big night out. On Saturday, 7 June, Jurrane will be headlining with Ian Betts at the launch party of Parallel. This brand-new night is taking off at Mass - with two pumping arenas to showcase the best of trance and harder beats.
Armed with mind-blowing new releases, coupled with his energetic performance that’s second nature when he steps behind the decks, Jurrane’s set is sure to leave the crowd gasping for more. In the week leading up to the party, we tracked him down to get behind the story of a Russian footballer, an underground residency, hours in studio with Sly One, and his FHM debut last month.
You started playing the piano at a very young age and completed most of your music grades. When did you start producing electronic music and why did you decide on trance?
Like most producers, I first got started with synths and recording when I was at school. I’d always liked electronic music but didn’t discover trance until much later – around 1999, I think. Trance just had all the qualities I look for in electronic music: I love dance music with energy, drive and passion. My theory about good trance is that it should sound like it’s made by machines, for machines, sounding as if it’s come into this world without any human intervention at all.
Tell us the story behind your DJ/production name.
There’s no great story to be honest! I just kind of liked the name and my real name (Jim Voute) isn’t one that really trips off the tongue. So I decided on a pseudonym. The name comes from a Russian footballer in a video game: I have no particular links to Russia, or indeed football, but I liked the name so I stole it.
You’ve secured a residency at one of London’s best underground parties, Planet Angel. When did you start playing there and how would you describe these events from a DJ’s point of view?
I first played at Planet Angel as a guest DJ back in 2004 and made regular appearances for the promotion over the next three years. I was made a resident DJ at the beginning of last year, and I’m incredibly grateful to Pete, Angel and the whole team there for the huge amount of faith they’ve shown in me. From a DJ’s perspective, Planet Angel’s events are just out of this world: I’ve never played to more up-for-it crowds and the love they have for the music and events is like nothing else I’ve experienced.
What sets Planet Angel apart is the immense love everyone involved has for what they do and the massive amount of effort that goes into every single event. There’s a real attention to detail which I think the partygoers appreciate and because the standards are so high, it really challenges me as a DJ to constantly improve. Some of the closing sets I’ve played for Planet Angel will rank as highlights for the rest of my life.
The next big one in your diary is Parallel at Mass where you’ll be headlining with Ian Betts. What can we expect from your set and the night?
It’s always great to see new trance parties starting up, so I’m really excited to be playing for Parallel’s launch event. There are superb lineups in both rooms and it’s a real privilege to be playing alongside such great talent. As for my set, there’s been some amazing trance released over the past few months so I’m looking forward to showcasing that, along with some of my own recent productions.
You’ve also played at some of London’s best clubs with sets for Tidy vs Extreme Euphoria, Vaccine vs Black Hole Recordings, Friendz, Knowwhere, Spangulation, Thirsty Thursdays and Magnetix. If you could pick a favourite moment at any of these parties, what would it be and why?
I think it would have to be playing closing set at the Gallery a couple of years ago when it was at Turnmills. It had always been a dream of mine to play in the main room at the Gallery and to play alongside what was an incredible lineup. Gabriel & Dresden handed over to me to play final set – it was just unbelievable. The lighting and sound in that place was astounding, and it was even better from the DJ booth!
You are currently producing a lot of tracks with Sly One. Tell us more about the production side of things and give us an overview of your latest work.
Sly One and I have formed a pretty prolific partnership over the last year or so. We’ve been good mates for ages and we’re both resident DJs for Planet Angel, so I guess it seemed quite a natural partnership. We’ve found we bounce off each other really well and complement each other’s production skills to great effect. Our debut collaboration Time Bomb did really well and was charted and playlisted by Paul van Dyk amongst others. We’re building up a sizeable catalogue of releases with tracks released on Discover Dark, Six Thirty, Emalodic, Future State, Archangel and Conspiracy and we’ve upcoming remixes on Propulsion and Perceptive. Plus, at the time of writing, Second Summer our follow-up to Time Bomb looks like it’s about to be signed to a major label so we’re really excited!
If you could sum up the sound of Jurrane in five words, what would it be?
Fun, pumping, bouncy, uplifting trance.
Who are your biggest influences?
It’s interesting: the people who I’ve learned most from are not necessarily the big superstars on the global stage, but more people with a massive amount of talent at a more local level. Musically, I’d say Ian Betts and Anthony Dean had a huge impact in shaping my sound when they were rocking Knowwhere as residents. Sly One is a constant inspiration to me – the stuff he does in the studio is jaw-dropping – and I still find myself learning from him as a DJ after all these years. Finally, in terms of industry experience and know-how, Tom Godwin’s taught (and continues to teach) me a lot and has had a lot of influence professionally.
Who is your favourite producer at the moment?
There’s a lot of amazing producers out there at the moment, so it’s tough to pick just one. I do like Nicholas Bennison’s sound a lot though: he fuses all the best elements of psy, prog and uplifting trance and he’s got quite a unique production style. We’re very excited to be remixing one of his upcoming tracks for Propulsion.

You’ve been part of the trance scene for quite some time now and have witnessed many changes. In which direction do you think the genre is heading and what will be a trend this summer?
In London, the genre seems to be going through a bit of a lull, which is a shame. That said, it seems to be tough times for dance music generally in the UK at the moment, although it’s great to see some new promotions springing up - most notably in the North. Musically, I’d say uplifting trance seems to be making a bit of a comeback after what’s seemed like a couple of years dominated by tech and electro-influenced music.
You have played with some pretty big names in the industry. Who stands out and why?
There are tons of names out there who I admire and I’ve been really lucky to play alongside. Playing on the same bill as Paul van Dyk was just amazing, and the aforementioned Gallery night when I was part of the main room lineup with Nick Warren, Dave Seaman and Gabriel & Dresden had me pinching myself the whole time. The Black Hole Records guys from Holland were also really nice.
What in your opinion is the most important element that sets a top production apart from the rest?
It has to be able to rock a dance floor. I know that sounds blindingly obvious, but there’s so much trance out there that’s lovely home or car listening music. It doesn’t really translate to clubs very well: when it gets played, you can see clubbers lose interest straight away, or start treading water. Good productions have energy and momentum regardless of their style and genre. The very best ones can make people dance no matter what time of the night it is or how tired they’re feeling.
Name one club, city, party or event where you would like to play in future.
There’s a lot of scope in that question! Amnesia in Ibiza was probably the most incredible clubbing experience I’ve ever had, so let’s say there. I’d also love to play the main room at Ministry of Sound here in London.
You’re one of the few DJs/producers who support club nights – even though you’re not booked to play on the night. I’ve bumped into you on many dance floors. Is this a reflection of your love for the scene and tell us about one party that you’ll always remember from a clubber’s perspective.
Ironically I’m finding myself going out less and less at moment, mostly because I’m so busy with a lot of other stuff. I try to support promotions as much as I can, though, particularly the new ones. I know from personal experience with Boundless how tough it can be to get a new party up and running.
I’ve already mentioned Amnesia but one night I’ll always remember from a clubber’s perspective is going to the Cream closing party there a couple of summers ago. A group of us went for one night only: we basically flew out there on the Thursday, met some friends, had a massive night watching Paul van Dyk play at Amnesia and then flew back, all in time for the Friday lunchtime edition of Neighbours. It just seemed like such a hedonistic thing to do and I’d love to do it again – in fact, hell, I think I’ll do it this year!
Tell us more about new projects in the pipeline and what are your plans for the future?
Well, hopefully it’s onwards and upwards in terms of production. Sly One and myself have really found our niche together. We’re going to make sure the releases keep coming. We’ve also decided that we don’t want to be pigeonholed into only making uplifting trance: our next few tracks are likely to be prog, tech and maybe even a bit of psy. As we’re becoming known as a regular production team, we’re also hoping for more back to back DJ bookings.
And finally… Let us in on one thing nobody knows about you.
That “no-one” knows? That’s a bit difficult, because I’m hopeless at keeping secrets! Not many people on HF know, but I was featured in FHM last month. They commissioned a designer to come and do a very expensive makeover on part of my flat. The photographs were in the 100 Sexiest Women issue though - so I’m a bit embarrassed to show my mum!
