Do You See Dead People? Dutch DJ/Producer The Sixth Sense gives an EXCLUSIVE interview ahead of his UK debut!

It’s a sad fact for most of us that most of the best trance related producers and DJs are Dutch. From the big hitters of the trance scene like Armin, Tiesto and Ferry, to the Techies like Sander van Doorn and Scot Project and even the new wave of the harder styles producers such as DJ Thera and Geck-O. It should be no surprise then that Peter Joosten aka The Sixth Sense, a DJ and producer who has been taking the scene by storm over the last few years, hails from Venlo in the south of Holland. With his first ever UK DJ set planned for the forthcoming Magnetix in April, we sent Dean Zone to see if he really does have a Sixth Sense…

So, Peter, do you really have a Sixth Sense? How did you get the name?
Haha, well I've got a sense of melodies, basically my head is full with them. It's just a matter of ordering chaotic patterns into something logical, then creating tracks around them. And our artist name, well it was Steve Hill's idea. I called myself DJ X-Sense before, which probably inspired him. You see, making up track names and the like is something I'm very bad at.
When you first came into the scene you were part of a duo. Where has your partner in crime gone?
He hasn't gone anywhere! He (Erick van Rijswick, aka The Hardstylist) still does what he always did, do gigs as a duo with me (even though we also play solo under The Sixth Sense name, much like other DJ duos like DuMonde etc) and make sure our music productions sound as good as they should. After all, it was through Erick that I learned to produce and make sounds, instead of just putting melodies and beats together from sample packs and presets. His studio is also the place where all our tracks see the light of day, so you can be sure that everything we release has been given the full amount of attention by both of us.

Pretty much all successful producers have aliases’ that they use to produce different styles of music. Do you have any and if so can you reveal who they are?
Well sure, I've been producing trance and progressive house as Steve Falcon, and did a few bits and pieces as Aurora Project but keep The Sixth Sense as the main name for releasing harder edged dance music. Recently I've started a new project too, called TAOKATSS for dubstep and drum and bass. For trance and hard trance, or hard trance and Hardstyle, one can use the same name, but this is totally different so a name change seemed wise to me.
What tools do you use in the studio and how do you get your sound?
Basically we do everything in FL Studio, then bounce down the track at a low volume and Erick works his magic on it in Logic Pro. I really don't know how exactly but he manages to get very good results this way. Making the sounds itself is different, as we use all sources available such as samples, presets and our own sounds made completely from scratch. We even collect any samples we can nick from existing records, but hey, sample packs are made the same way aren't they!

You got quite a few nods of recognition from DJs as an up and coming producer for at this years Hard Dance Awards. How do you plan to take things to the next level for 2010?
The plan is just to do what we always did, sit in the studio, pumping out one tune after the other, but since we have our own digital label and we're both vinyl freaks, it seems a nice idea to do a vinyl release this year. Apart from that, we also decided to start organising a club night, called Technosis. Erick already did this from 1997 until recently so we decided to bring back the same event to the place where it all started, in our home town. The first edition will be held the 19th of June, and will feature A*S*Y*S* and DJ Thera to name but a few, so we should be up for an interesting event I reckon!
You’re the Nero Records boss but not the founder. How did that come about?
Well, Craig Stuart (aka Johnny Rock) founded the label and planned big things for it, but due to circumstances it had been in the fridge until 2008 when we decided to finally start the label after all. A year later Craig decided to switch to producing house and electro so now it's me who's in charge.

What future plans do you hold for the Nero label and for yourself as a DJ/producer?
Being both massive vinyl addicts, we are planning to switch from digital only to the good old black gold. You see, it's a risk but one we're willing to take. We secured the skills of Nick the Kid to remix our next release, which will be one of our own tracks called 'Dark Vizion'. Just wait and see!
Meanwhile I'm planning to focus on music production in the broadest sense, I just finished a drum and bass track and even a dubstep track, as well as working on techno, acid, even hardcore! Of course German trance will remain our focal point though. DJ wise I really look forward to my UK debut, it's one of these things which I've been dreaming about. The crowds there are amazing and I hope it will be the first of many times!
Hardstyle has been emerging as the main sub genre of Hard Dance music on the continent for ages now. Is this something that you’re embracing or rejecting?
Haha you just HAD to ask me this didn't you! I have mixed feeling about this. On the one hand Hardstyle has always been a genre I'm very keen on. However, lately about 80% of all records are of the same type of sounds, with triplet melodies and Dutch hardcore kicks. It's not bad per se, but it is, in my opinion, bad to spin a set full of this type of sound. I do however embrace Hardstyle like it used to be, a bit of this and that, but not quite as narrow as some of the Hardstyle you get today. But having said that, there are very many DJ's and produces who think alike, and continue to play very varied sets, including the Nu Style which is most popular, but incorporating many other sounds as well, like acid, or techno or more trance-ish type of tracks. In my opinion that's what the scene needs to prevent it from becoming decimated by its own success, like hardcore in the late 90's.
This will be your first time playing in the UK, how do you think the scene and crowd are different from back home?
To me the main difference is that most people in the UK are very open minded, while people in Holland are often just spoiled by the massive availability of big raves with a 200k + production budget, so they tend to be a very hard audience to please. The thing I like in the UK is that the hard dance scene there is more underground, or at least contains a much bigger underground movement than in Holland. Here it's gone pretty mainstream, which of course isn't all bad, but it does have a downside to it from time to time.
So what can myself and the Magnetix faithful expect from you when you grace the stage @ Club 414 on Friday 30th May then?
I'm aiming at a decent balance between uplifting and dark sounds, somewhere in between I think. You could describe our sound as similar to the old Scot Project tunes, before 2005. I'm not about spinning the newest records though, I just want to play records that fit well behind one another, be they old or new. And needless to say, I'll give a couple of my own productions their baptism of fire! Anyways, I really can't wait till then, I am pretty sure it's going to be rocking! See you there folks!

Spring is officially here, the days are getting warmer and longer and you wouldn’t know it, but we’re slowly creeping out of the “recession”. Now if those 3 things don’t make you want to go out and party like it’s 1999 then we don’t know what will! So without anymore fuss, brace yourself for news of the April 30th instalment of Magnetix!
We’re very proud to have none other than James Lawson headline this event. Anyone who was around back in the days of Camden Palace will testify to this mans genius, both in the studio and behind the decks, and we’re bringing him and his new Psy Trance sound to Brixton’s favourite venue, just for you!
We also have a UK Exclusive with The Sixth Sense joining us all the way from Venlo in Holland. The label manager for Nero Records has been busy very since he burst onto the scene, and with the many original Hard Trance productions and remixes behind him over the last 5 years meant that we just had to offer him his first ever UK set.
Another DJ from foreign shores will also be joining in is Pan, the main man behind Chemistry. Having rocked the Psy scene in Oz for ages he moved to London for more of the same, so we’re extremely happy to have secured his services for the evening.
We’re also very happy to announce the return of a Magnetix resident and former favourite, Mat Lock. Recently back from his worldy travels we’re sure he has plenty of tall tales to tell, but also lots of even better Trance to play, and he’ll be doing so for the first 2 hours to get things off with a bang.
Keeping things a little closer to home, our final guest of the evening will be Latex Zebra. Founder of Zoology, the 414's longest running monthly promotion makes this man a bit of a legend in our eyes so we could hardly say no when his services became available to us.
